Elijah Wood To Be Honored At Charity Gala

On January 14th, the night before the Golden Globes, The Art of Elysium will celebrate its fifth annual HEAVEN Gala, honoring Lord Of The Rings star Elijah Wood.

This fall The Art of Elysium celebrated 14 years of providing creative arts programming for hospitalized youth in Los Angeles and New York. This year’s Visionary and creative force behind HEAVEN is Cameron Silver, founder and co-owner of Decades. The organization is thrilled to unveil his idea of heaven on earth, or “elysium”, on January 14th. The charity will also recognize Elijah Wood as their 2012 Spirit of Elysium Recipient for his years of volunteerism and tireless fundraising efforts on their behalf.

Following his charity trip to West Africa, David Arquette has launched a special campaign to raise money for Malaria No More.

“This year, 40 days before my 40th birthday, I traveled to Senegal in West Africa with Malaria No More to learn about malaria- a preventable and treatable disease that kills a child every 45 seconds. That’s crazy,” writes Arquette on his fundraising page on CrowdRise.com. "Most of malaria’s victims are kids under the age of five in Africa. Reaching that fifth birthday is a major milestone and we can help make sure they do.

The Black Eyed Peas held their seventh annual Peapod Charity Benefit Concert in Hollywood on Thursday, and a host of celebrity friends turned out in support.

Held at The Music Box, the show raised much-needed funds for the group’s Peapod Foundation, which aims to give back to the band members’ communities around the world.Founded by will.i.am and Polo Molina of Grassroots Productions, The Peapod benefit concerts date back to the earliest incarnation of The Black Eyed Peas and began as charity toy drives for Los Angeles based children and local orphanages.

Dozens of national and local events are planned to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of hunger in our nation, and to motivate everyone — from children to grandparents, and from farmers to Fortune 500 executives — to take action to help feed the more than 49 million Americans who frequently struggle to find enough nutritious food to feed themselves and their families.

“Hunger is at a crisis level in our nation. Feeding America fed 37 million Americans in 2009, an increase of more than 12 million in just four short years. More than one-third of the households we interviewed for our Hunger in America 2010 study told us that they are sometimes completely without food. Celebrity couple Courteney Cox and David Arquette are well known for their charity work, and now the unstoppable team have joined with American jewelry manufacturer Satya to create their own line of butterfly-adorned pieces for charity. 

The couple is leading a drive to raise money for children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition that affects the skin, after a friend’s child fell victim to the condition. It’s a cause that both have been involved in for a number of years.

 "There is a beautiful child named Brendon, the son of one of our dear friends, Andrea Pett Joseph, who was born with epidermolysis bullosa or EB," Arquette told Vogue. "We were not aware of the condition until it affected us personally but, of course, once we got to know this incredible child we wanted to do whatever we could to help.

Actor David Arquette was out and about for charity last week.

The Scream star is a spokesperson for the Cheesecake Factory’s Drive Out Hunger Tour, an initiative visiting 30 cities in 30 days this month. The actor drove a through Los Angeles collecting donations for the charity tour and visited the set of Cougar Town, where his wife Courteney Cox was shooting her new ABC TV series. She and her co-star Busy Philipps donated cans of soup in exchange for slices of red velvet cheesecake. Arquette then visited a nearby studio where Zach Braff was filming Scrubs.

David Arquette To Live In Box For The Hungry

Actor and World Hunger activist David Arquette is to live in a plastic box in New York City to help raise money for the hungry.

The 37-year-old plans to stay in a plexiglass box above the Madison Square Garden marquee for about eight hours each day on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Arquette is aiming to raise $250,000 for Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief charity. Donations can be made via a special Facebook page set up by Snickers, who are sponsoring the stunt. Until September 7, Snickers will donate $1 for every person to join the Facebook page, and also match every dollar donated by supporters.

Celebrities Give Their Soles To Foster Care Centre

The first “Foster Soles” online charity auction took place last month to support Hillsides, a Los Angeles foster care and treatment centre.

Foster Soles collected the shoes of dozens of big names, such as Denzel Washington, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicolas Cage, who autographed their footwear before putting them up on the block.

Proceeds of the auction will be used by Hillsides for their programs and in public awareness. Once an orphanage, it is now a private, non-profit centre providing abused children with a safe refuge and advocating for their rights. Hillsides’ website says, “Although [the children] come from all over Southern California and encompass every ethnic and socioeconomic group, they share a common experience – the emotional scars that result from child abuse. With counselling and mental health treatment, children at Hillsides learn that they are not alone, that they are safe and cared for. Six programs constitute the framework for Hillsides treatment services – Residential Treatment, the Education Center, the Family Center and Advocacy.”

Letter Carriers Launch Food Drive With Celebrity PSAs

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has announced that the nation’s largest food drive to combat hunger will be conducted this year on Saturday, May 9. On that day, letter carriers will collect non-perishable donations from homes as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

The 17th annual NALC National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger” is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Carriers collected a record 73.1 million pounds of food in last year’s drive. The drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in over 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Donations will be collected by more than 1,400 local branches of the 300,000-member postal union and delivered to food banks, pantries and shelters that serve the communities where they are collected. Assisting in the effort are rural letter carriers and other postal employees, as well as members of other unions and thousands of civic volunteers.

Look To The Stars’ Delinda Lombado recently got the chance to talk to the CEO of Hollywood Knights International, whose celebrity basketball team is a leader in charity fundraising.

Back in 1973, David Mirisch was way ahead of the curve. As founder of Hollywood Knights International, he is credited with being the first (or at least most important) person to pair celebrities with fundraising, producing some of the first consecutive tennis and golf charity tournaments in Hollywood.

Now headed by David’s son Michael (who took the reins as CEO in 1992), Hollywood Knights International are still going strong and its Celebrity Basketball Team has become a symbol for fundraising world-wide.
