Richard Branson Rocks The Kasbah For Charity

Richard Branson hosted his annual star-studded Rock The Kasbah charity event in Los Angeles last week.

The event attracted an amazing array of celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan, Sharon Stone, Paula Abdul, Daisy Fuentes, Jenna Elfman, Kristin Cavarlli, Matt Goss, Natasha Bedingfield, Gavin Rossdale and many others.

Proceeds from the evening went to Virgin Unite’s domestic and international programs, including the Eve Branson Foundation, set up by Sir Richard’s mother to help women in Morocco generate their own incomes to support their families.

The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug and Alcohol Awareness will hold a star-studded benefit in Hollywood tomorrow night, September 12.

Brent Shapiro was the son of Robert Shapiro, who was an attorney on OJ Simpson’s defense team in 1995. Brent – who had battled with addictions most of his life – died in 2005 at the age of 25. It is the vision of the Brent Shapiro Foundation to fight the stigma of addictions through education, and help parents communicate with their children on addiction issues.

Katie Holmes appeared on the 100th episode of So You Think You Can Dance last night, July 23, to raise awareness of a new charity.

The actress performed a song-and-dance homage to Judy Garland to raise awareness of the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a new charity established by Holmes, Nigel Lythgoe, Carrie Ann Inaba and director/choreographer Adam Shankman. The foundation aims to support, improve and increase access to dance education. Supporters of the charity include Paula Abdul, Jennifer Lopez and Miley Ray Cyrus.

“I like to sing and dance, so this has been really fun,” said Holmes. “I think it’s important to let kids experience music and dancing and singing and the arts and also sports. This is the next generation, and I think it’s important to give them every opportunity to grow and discover what it is that they like.”

Paula Abdul is cleaning out her closets for a worthy cause.

The American Idol judge will be donating her fashionable duds to an eBay charity auction. The petite performer will be teaming up with Auction Cause, a leader in cause marketing campaigns, branding, and fundraising to raise money for the American Humane Association’s Pets and Women’s Shelters (PAWS) program.

The PAWS program, with the help of Abdul serving as national spokesperson, is dedicated to keeping victims of domestic violence and their pets safe. Additional proceeds will benefit Petco and the Guide Dogs of America.

The Stars For A Cause Auction features a wide range of rare and collectable items, such as posters signed by Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anna Paquin, David Duchovny, Rumer Willis, Jonas Brothers, P. Diddy, America Ferrera, Hayden Panettiere, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Anne Hathaway, Steve Carell, Emma Thompson, Marisa Tomei, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Tina Fey, Steven Spielberg and many more.

Paula Abdul To Launch National Guide Dog Month

Paula Abdul will kick off National Guide Dog Month this Friday, May 8, when she presents a guide dog to a special surprise celebrity guest at the Guide Dogs Of America headquarters in Sylmar, California.

“Being part of this important cause is truly special and very close to my heart,” said Abdul. “Most people have no idea how much time and money it takes to train these beautiful animals to give such a precious gift to those who need it most. It can take more than two years and $40,000 to properly train a guide dog. Together, we can help guide dog schools provide more of these life-changing partners to people who are blind.”

Abdul will be participating in a number of events throughout May – National Guide Dog Month – to raise awareness of guide dogs and their role in the community. Last month, she was in Palm Springs to present seven US veterans with guide dogs, and on May 7 she will launch an auction to raise money for American Humane’s Pets And Women’s Shelters program (PAWS).

Throughout the month of May, PETCO customers can buy specially marked bags of Natural Balance dog food, with Paula Abdul’s picture on them, to donate 50 cents of the purchase price to participating guide dog schools. PETCO shoppers can also round up their purchases, buy special donation cards at the register, or make donations directly online at PETCO.com.

Paula Abdul is to launch a new charity auction on May 7th to raise money for American Humane’s Pets And Women’s Shelters program (PAWS).

“The PAWS Program is a critical way of providing a transition for abused women and children into a safer and better life,” said Abdul when she signed on as spokesperson for the campaign. “I feel privileged to be involved with this extremely important and necessary program.”

The PAWS campaign acknowledges the richness of the bond between people and their pets, which often provide unconditional love and comfort to adult domestic violence victims and their children. For that reason — as well as for the safety of the pets — American Humane strongly advocates keeping domestic violence victims and their pets together whenever possible.

“I now know that up to 48% of abused women refuse to leave – or delay leaving – an abusive home because they have no safe place for their pets,” said Abdul. "Being a pet lover myself, I can’t imagine having to separate from my dogs – Bessie, Chomps, Thumbelina and Tulip – especially in times of crisis. The PAWS program is changing that and will help save countless lives.

“Only six shelters are known to currently house pets on-site, with five more in progress. I encourage you to contact American Humane to learn more about how you can start a PAWS program.”

Paula Abdul To Present Guide Dogs To Veterans

American Idol judge Paula Abdul will be in Palm Springs on Sunday, April 5, to congratulate seven U.S. veterans as they receive their guide dogs.

The veterans – who include a veteran who has participated in three wars – recently completed training to live with their canine companions and will participate in the graduation ceremony. The veterans will receive the dogs from Guide Dogs of the Desert, an organization based in Palm Springs that improves the lives of the blind by creating opportunities for life-changing independence, and by conducting community outreach and education programs. The organization provides safe mobility, loving companionship and the “miracle of independence” to the blind through the use of a guide dog

“As an animal lover, it’s my honor to help raise awareness for [the] invaluable organizations who give so much help to the blind,” said Abdul. “I hope everyone will contribute to this program.”

Paula Abdul is known for her support of guide dog issues, and recently signed up to help Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance, Petco, and independent pet stores raise awareness and money for guide dog organizations across the country. She will be participating in a number of events throughout May – National Guide Dog Month – to raise awareness of guide dogs and their role in the community.

VH1’s Save The Music Foundation is to team up with Esquire Magazine for a charity party in the Hollywood Hills.

This fall Esquire will unveil its sixth annual Signature Space, transforming a stunning, contemporary home into a true personification of the modern man’s lifestyle. Drew Barrymore is being hounded by bidders who are doggedly pursuing an exciting new internet auction. The 33-year-old actress is selling a one-of-kind work of art she created… with her pet dog.

The star has donated a canvas featuring her handprints – and the paw prints of her dog, Flossie – to The Rescue Train, an organization that seeks to reduce the number of animals entering shelters by promoting education through creating unique programs and solutions.

This Summer has seen both style and flair in the fashion world, and nowhere has this been more evident than in the clothes worn by celebrities. From the metallic mini-dresses that made a splash at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards to the dazzling array of gowns seen at the 79th Academy Awards, celebrity fashions have made it a year to remember. Yet, in a season that has included a host of environmental and humanitarian events, many stars have used what they wear to raise awareness of some big social and ecological subjects. They have embraced issue-based labels as a way of provoking thought on some of the most important problems facing the world today.

One such label is Threads For Thought, a contemporary lifestyle brand of clothing for men and women. With a portion of its proceeds going to the Natural Resources Defense Council and the International Rescue Committee, Threads For Thought produces designs which draw inspiration from three major areas: Africa, the Environment, and Peace.

“Bono’s biggest impression of the Africans is that they don’t want charity, they want trade,” said Hewson. “They have pride, they’re very dignified people. They want to work. This company is a business model that other people can follow.”

The company has raised the support of celebrities such as Pierce Brosnan, and last year released special Edun-One t-shirts, which made over $376,000 for ALAFA, a fund set up to fight Aids in Africa. The t-shirts were worn by stars such as Naomi Watts, Gary Oldman, Heath Ledger, and Jimmy Fallon.

With Winter just round the corner, both the celebrities and the fans are looking forward to new styles and surprises from the fashion world.
