Surviving band members David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason – who made a rare appearance together during a performance of The Wall in London on May 12 – have signed a specially painted guitar to raise money for Crisis.

James Blunt was in Beirut this week to play a special show for a local charity.

The show, held on Monday night at the Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure Center, raised money for Tamanna, a charity based in Lebanon that grants wishes to critically ill children.

“The real stars in the world aren’t the people sitting in a room with everybody’s attention focused on them,” he said prior to the show. “The real stars are the people out there, the doctors and nurses, the people on the street, the people who are helping others.”

The pair performed their new single, Shame, in front of 60,000 people – including Prince Harry – at the massive Help for Heroes concert at Twickenham on September 12.

The stars were joined by Tom Jones, James Blunt, Enrique Iglesias, Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Plan B and The Saturdays. The show was hosted by the best of the UK’s comedy talent – John Bishop, Kevin Bridges, Jack Dee, Jason Manford and Michael McIntyre – with a special guest appearance from Bruce Forsyth. Rod Stewart has donated tickets to a charity initiative that Jeremy Clarkson once described as being “even better than sliced bread.”

Stewart has donated tickets to his upcoming shows at the Sheffield Arena on July 20 and the Glasgow SECC on July 26 to Tickets for Troops. Tickets For Troops was set up last year to provide top tickets to sporting, musical and entertainment events to troops and their families during these difficult times. A new book featuring photos of over 100 celebrities will raise money for a human rights project.

Room 23 is the brainchild of entrepreneur and philanthropist Diana Jenkins and depicts a year in the life of a Beverly Hills penthouse suite. Help for Heroes is certainly living up to its name. The charity aimed at helping injured service personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan launched in October of 2007 with an initial goal of raising $12 million. With help from the community, various fundraisers and celebrities, Help for Heroes, has managed to raise a staggering $6 million in little under five months.

“I am incredibly proud and grateful for the commitment and work that our armed forces do for our country”, said soccer star David Beckham. “I support the campaign fully.”

London and Austin host GuitarTown for charity

Sir Paul McCartney is among a group of celebrities who have donated giant guitars to exhibitions in both America and England, to be auctioned off over the next few months.

The exhibitions are part of the Gibson GuitarTown Galas And Auctions being held in London and Austin, and feature both 10-foot-high and regular-sized guitars designed and signed by artists and musicians. The sculptures have been on show in the cities for 10 weeks, and will soon be removed in preparation for the auctions, which will benefit a variety of local charities.

“I just fancied playing a big guitar!” joked Sir Paul, who signed a sculpture designed by cartoonist Rosie Brooks entitled And The Crowd Goes Wild. “I think this one will hopefully catch the imagination of the public and whoever is going to buy it at the auction, and raise money for The Prince’s Trust, the Teenage Cancer Trust, and Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy – which are all great charities.”

Sir Elton John has given hope to aspiring singers everywhere by being crowned Karaoke King in a recent charity auction.

The event, held at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London on June 21, raised funds for the Hoping Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists children in Palestinian refugee camps. Bidders at the auction were able to “buy” their favourite singer to perform a song of their choice, or in some cases to perform a duet with them.

Sir Elton gave his rendition of the Elvis Presley tune “Are You Lonesome Tonight” in front of an audience that included Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson. His talents were bought by Elizabeth Hurley for $200,000 as a birthday gift to herself.
