Stars To Support Anti-Death Penalty Awards Dinner

Advocacy organization Death Penalty Focus is to hold its annual Awards Gala on Thursday, May 21, with some high profile guests slated to attend.

The 18th Annual Awards Dinner will honor Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico; John Van de Kamp, former Attorney General of California; Nancy Miller, creator of TV series Saving Grace; and several others. Guests will include Six Feet Under’s James Cromwell, Mike Farrell and Amy Brenneman, and the host committee includes Alec Baldwin, William Baldwin, Jackson Browne, Morgan Fairchild, Danny Glover, Lily Tomlin and Noah Wyle.

Founded in 1988, Death Penalty Focus is dedicated to the abolition of capital punishment through public education; grassroots and political organizing; original research; media outreach; local, state and nationwide coalition building; and the education of religious, legislative and civic leaders about the death penalty and its alternatives.

Eva Longoria To Rally For Children With Cancer

Actress Eva Longoria has been appointed as Honorary Chair for the Rally For Children With Cancer.

This exciting event will be taking place in Los Angeles on May 1st and 2nd, 2009, and will also be launched across North America throughout the year.

All participating Rally Drivers will fundraise a minimum of $25,000 each to qualify and draft their Celebrity Navigator. The higher the funds raised, the better draft position earned. This event will feature several well-known Celebrities and attract huge media attention.

The rally will benefit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Padres Contra el Cancer, and Eva Longoria has stepped up to support its efforts to help those in need. Not only will she act as Honorary Chair, but she will also act as navigator for one of the rally drivers. Other celebrity navigators include Mario Lopez, Shannon Tweed, Stephen Baldwin, Terrence Howard, Valerie Cruz, William Baldwin, Zachary Levi, Julie Benz, James Kyson Lee and many more.

Rally for Kids with Cancer will kick off with “The Qualifiers” Celebrity Draft Party on May 1. This cocktail reception provides Rally Drivers with the opportunity to meet and recruit their desired Celebrity Navigator. The premium drafting positions will be determined by the amount of dollars raised through pledges and sponsorship. The top fundraisers will have first choice in the selection process. Remaining positions will be randomly drawn from among the Celebrity Navigators not yet drafted.

Fuelled by an extraordinary schedule of Pit Stops at some of the most exclusive establishments and venues in the city, Saturday May 2 will see Rally Drivers and Celebrity Navigators will embark on a journey from one clue to the next.

Fun and innovation are the call of the day. The skills participants require to be part of the winning team include power of observation, the ability to read a map and figure out challenging clues, and of course, a true love of driving. Scores are determined by a combination of successfully completed tasks and the accumulation of assigned points. Thinking fast, not driving fast, gets you across the “Finish Line”.

Comedy Celebration To Raise Money For Myeloma Research

Ray Romano is set to host the International Myeloma Foundation’s second annual Comedy Celebration tomorrow night, November 15.

The event will kick off at 6pm at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and Club on South Lucerne Boulevard with a cocktail reception and silent auction, with the comedy show starting at 8pm. The evening promises to deliver hilarious performances from Patricia Heaton, Jeff Garlin, Kevin James, Robert Klein, Doris Roberts, and Fred Willard, and will also feature the original one-and-only Blues Brothers – AKA Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi.

Proceeds from the evening will go to the Peter Boyle Memorial Fund at the International Myeloma Foundation, dedicated to fighting the deadly cancer of the bone marrow for which there is currently no known cure.

Honorary chairs of the event include Alec and William Baldwin, Halle Berry, Candice Bergen, Kim Cattrall, Ted Danson, Mariska Hargitay, Ethan Hawke, Michael Keaton, Robin Leach, Bette Midler, and many others.

Baldwin Brothers Behind Breast Cancer Auction

A private falconry lesson with Robert Kennedy Jr is just one of the more unusual items up for grabs in a new online auction this month, with the proceeds going to a charity set up by a brave woman who wants to benefit others affected by a deadly disease.

Actor William Baldwin is behind the auction, which is being held on the Charity Folks website until the end of October. Twenty unique and once in a lifetime items are on auction to raise funds for the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund, a charity set up by Baldwin’s mother after she underwent a double mastectomy in 1996. The 70 year old turned her tragedy into courage to assist other women who are affected by breast cancer, and the Fund, which has raised over $2.6 million since its inception, donates money to researchers investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Both William Baldwin and his brother, Alec Baldwin, sit on the board of the Fund.

“I was very lucky to get a significant number of people on board and committed,” said Baldwin, who approached many of his friends to donate items to the auction. “I think that sort of created somewhat of an aura, where people were like, ‘You know, I want to be in on this’.”

The 44 year old star of movies such as Backdraft and the current ABC series Dirty Sexy Money has certainly managed to attract an impressive amount of friends. Lots include a day on the campaign trail with Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, an afternoon playing pool with Baldwin and Chevy Chase at Chevy’s home, a walk-on role in the series “30 Rock” with Alec Baldwin, backstage passes to concerts with Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow, as well as front row seats to The Police live at Madison Square Garden in New York. Sting has also donated an autographed bass guitar, and Bruce Springsteen has supplied an autographed CD set. A number of vacation and dinner packages are also on offer.
