Angelina Jolie Supports the Malala Fund

In her BBC diary blog, 11-year-old Malala Yousafzai wrote, “I have the right to play. I have the right to sing. I have the right to talk. I have the right to go to the market. I have the right to speak. I don’t mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is an education, and I am afraid of no one.”

Actor and human rights advocate Angelina Jolie recited those words at the Women in the World Conference in New York earlier this month, and then described what happened six months ago to the now 15-year-old Pakistani girl, when Taliban gunmen boarded her school bus: “They shot her at point blank range in the head, and made her stronger. In a brutal attempt to silence her voice, it grew louder and she more resolute, calling on the entire world to ensure the right for every girl and boy to an education.”

Together with Vital Voices and Women in the World, Jolie has created Malala Fund to support the girl’s cause; Malala Yousafzai will be in charge of it. On video at the conference, Malala said that it was the happiest moment of her life to announce that she will use money from the fund to enable 40 girls between age five and twelve to attend school in her homeland. By providing the girls’ families with a monthly stipend, the girls need not be forced into domestic labor positions. “I invite all of you to support Malala Fund and let us turn the education of 40 girls into 40 million girls,” she said.

Meryl Streep Films PSAs For National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep encourages people to get screened for colon cancer in new broadcast public service announcements (PSAs) that launch in March, in conjunction with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The PSAs, which will premiere today on Katie!, are the latest collaboration between the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (EIF’s NCCRA), co-founded by Katie Couric, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the CDC’s Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign. This initiative is a multi-year effort to educate Americans about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screening for men and women age 50 and over.

Stars Sign Letter To Presidents On Behalf Of Women In Afghanistan

A plethora of stars have signed an open letter from Amnesty International to President Obama and Afghan President Karzai in support of Women’s Rights.

Among the signatures on the letter are Yoko Ono, Patrick Stewart, Joan Baez, Sting, Stephen King, Cynthia Nixon and Meryl Streep.

“As champions of women’s rights who are dedicated to protecting women’s human rights, we are deeply concerned that the significant gains made by women and girls in Afghanistan may be threatened as U.S. and allied troops leave the country,” reads the letter. "We urge you to adopt a comprehensive action plan to guarantee that the clock is not turned back on a decade of strides in education, health, security and employment for women and girls. At stake is the future of Afghanistan, after billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives have been sacrificed. We believe if women’s progress cannot be sustained, then Afghan society will fail.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) has announced that the New York Yankees are the latest group in a long list of celebrities and public figures who are stepping out to support BULLY, which is expanding to theaters nationwide Friday, April 13th, with a recent PSA they shot during spring training in Tampa, Florida.

Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, along with players Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera and Curtis Granderson took a timeout from practice at Steinbrenner Field to speak up about the effects bullying has on children and what people can do to make a change.

Sting hosted a plethora of famous faces at his biennial fundraising concert for The Rainforest Fund at Carnegie Hall this week.

Directed by Trudie Styler and featuring key speaker Bill Clinton, the show attracted a star-studded audience that included Aretha Franklin, Tom Hanks and many more.

The Rainforest Fund was founded in 1989 by Sting and Trudie Styler in response to a direct request for help from a Kayapo Indian leader in Brazil who was seeking to protect his people’s land and culture. Over the past 23 years, the Rainforest Fund has worked in partnership with more than 100 local organizations in all major rainforest areas and successfully protected over 115,000 sq km of forest. Meryl Streep has donated $10,000 to a charter school in the Rhode Island city of Central Falls.

The Oscar winner was told about the plight of the school, which faced closure, by fellow Oscar nominee Viola Davis.

According to an Press Association report, Angelo Garcia – founder of the Segue Institute for Learning – said a check from the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts, a charity founded by Streep and her husband, arrived with a note saying it was on behalf of actress Davis, who grew up in Central Falls.

Meryl Streep Campaigning For Museum Home At National Mall

Noting that the USA has never been modest about its achievements, actress Meryl Streep laments that there is no museum in the country’s capital that recognizes the contributions of the female half of the population through whose efforts, over the past 300 years, the status of American women has evolved.

The National Women’s History Museum (NWHM), currently administered from office space in nearby Alexandria, VA, says its mission is to fill the void of information about women’s contributions and accomplishments that “have been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture”.

Giving Back Fund Announces Top 30 Celebrity Charity Donations For 2011

The Giving Back Fund (GBF), a nonprofit organization that provides philanthropic management and consulting to the sports and entertainment industries, released its fifth annual Giving Back 30, a list of the 30 celebrities who made the largest donations to charity in 2011 according to public records.

The list includes celebrities from many walks of life including actors, writers, producers, musicians, comedians, and athletes.

Topping the list were actress Jami Gertz and her husband, Anthony Ressler, who donated $10,569,002 to the Ressler Gertz Foundation. Coming in second was musician Herb Alpert, who gave $9,104,829 to the Herb Alpert Foundation – which focuses on the arts, compassion and well being – followed by Mel Gibson, who gave $6,853,020 to the AP Reilly Foundation, which he started to support the Holy Family Church.
