Sting's 60th Raises Millions For Charity

A host of stars – including Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Mary J. Blige – helped celebrate Sting’s 60th birthday on Saturday night, and raised $3.7 million for charity in the process.

The stars took part in a massive charity concert at New York’s Beacon Theater in front of an audience that included Trudie Styler, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Jake Gyllenhaal and Melanie Griffith, as well as 32 members of Britain’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who have all completed missions in Afghanistan.

Also appearing on stage at the event were Robert Downey Jr, will.i.am, Chris Botti, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Joe Sumner and Branford Marsalis.

As millions of baseball fans tune in to watch the American League’s Texas Rangers and National League’s San Francisco Giants compete in the first game of the World Series on Wednesday, October 27th on FOX, MLB will once again bring the fight against cancer to the forefront and help raise funds for groundbreaking “translational” research designed to bring new therapies to patients quickly and save lives.

During the seventh-inning stretch of Game One of the World Series, a moving PSA featuring Academy Award nominated actor, Jake Gyllenhaal will play on the jumbo screens for the crowd, as well as for millions at home watching FOX. Fans in the stadium will then be asked to stand in unison as sportscaster Joe Buck rallies the crowd — and the viewing audience — via an on-air call-to-action to “launch stars” in tribute to those diagnosed with cancer. The Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) television event is set to air live and commercial-free on FOX, September 10, 2010, at 8p.m. EST & PST / 7 p.m. CST. Joining ABC, CBS and NBC, FOX will donate one hour of live simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised September 10th fundraising special, to be broadcast from Los Angeles.

Additionally, VH1, HBO Latino, TV One and G4 have agreed to air the SU2C event. They join HBO, Discovery Health, E!, MLB Network and The Style Network for an historic evening to raise much-needed funds for groundbreaking cancer research.

“Cancer claims one person every minute of every day in the United States – 1500 people every single day. This year it will take the lives of more than half a million people in this country, and almost eight million people worldwide… Cancer is a crisis and we want to convey that ALL Americans can play a role in helping the scientists who are working to end it. Natalie Portman was out and about in New York on Sunday night to host a special charity event to kick off the Hungry In America Project.

Held at the Colicchio & Sons Restaurant, and hosted by The Feed Foundation, the event launched a new documentary titled Hungry In America, directed by Lori Silverbush and Kristi Jacobson. The film addresses the fact that one in four children in the US lives on the brink of hunger.

The event was attended by famous faces such as Jake Gyllenhaal, and boasted a host committee that included Ben Affleck, Marcia Cross, Samantha Harris, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Ali Larter, Katherine McPhee, Julianne Moore, Alison Sweeney and many others. Catering was via Tom Colicchio.

God’s Love We Deliver provides meals and nutritional counseling to people living with life-altering illnesses. On December 22, stars such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Hartnett, Matt Dillon, Justin Theroux, Mark Ronson, Scott Campbell, Mary Louise-Parker and many others gathered at the Smyth Tribeca Hotel to raise money for the cause.

The charity has also announced that Joan Rivers will perform a series of shows in January to raise money for the organization. The star will perform at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York on Jan 5/6/12/20 and February 3 and 24. Proceeds will also go to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Celebrities Give Their Soles To Foster Care Centre

The first “Foster Soles” online charity auction took place last month to support Hillsides, a Los Angeles foster care and treatment centre.

Foster Soles collected the shoes of dozens of big names, such as Denzel Washington, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicolas Cage, who autographed their footwear before putting them up on the block.

Proceeds of the auction will be used by Hillsides for their programs and in public awareness. Once an orphanage, it is now a private, non-profit centre providing abused children with a safe refuge and advocating for their rights. Hillsides’ website says, “Although [the children] come from all over Southern California and encompass every ethnic and socioeconomic group, they share a common experience – the emotional scars that result from child abuse. With counselling and mental health treatment, children at Hillsides learn that they are not alone, that they are safe and cared for. Six programs constitute the framework for Hillsides treatment services – Residential Treatment, the Education Center, the Family Center and Advocacy.”

Kite Runner Auction Raises Afghan Hopes

Madonna, Will Ferrell and Angelina Jolie are among the many celebrities who have joined the Kite Runner Auction, which runs until the 15th of December.

The auction corresponds with the theater release of The Kite Runner on December 14th. Based on the book of the same name, the film explores the world of Amir, who returns to Afghanistan after 20 years in America to set right his past mistakes.

The book’s author Khaled Hosseini is joined in the auction by tail-signers Edward Norton, Steve Nash, Cher and Halle Berry. 75% of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to the Afghanistan Relief Organization.
