ESSENCE, the preeminent brand for African-American women, will recognize the extraordinary achievements of Black women in film and television with its 6th annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon, taking place on February 21, 2013 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Celebrity Activists Take Part In Half The Sky

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a four-hour PBS primetime documentary film and national broadcast event inspired by the widely acclaimed book of the same name by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn airing October 1 and 2.

Gabrielle Union Urges Skin Cancer Prevention

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime. As fall fast approaches, Neutrogena and actress Gabrielle Union are urging people to make skin cancer prevention part of their daily, year-round routines in an effort to thwart this epidemic.

Mariah Carey To Be Honored At Russell Simmons' Art For Life Event

The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation will hold its thirteenth annual Art For Life garden party at Russell Simmons' Hampton Estate on July 28.

The event is set to honor Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, with special performances by Anita Baker, Salt-N-Pepa and Diggy Simmons. Celebrities Attend First-Ever American Giving Awards

To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) was awarded a $1 million grant from Chase at the first-ever American Giving Awards (AGAs) on NBC on Friday.

The program, hosted by 22-time Emmy Award-winner Bob Costas, featured celebrity tributes to five charities selected through online voting. Stars including will.i.am, Miley Cyrus, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 50 Cent, and Rodney Atkins celebrated the accomplishments of the charities.

To Write Love on Her Arms is dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.

Gabrielle Union Launches Breast Cancer Program In Ghana

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has expanded its mission to Africa thanks to a little bit of help from Gabrielle Union, Malaak Compton-Rock, and Billye Aaron.

Komen for the Cure – a global leader of the breast cancer movement – invited the three women to an international breast cancer symposium in Accra, Ghana, late last month, where they met Ghana President John Kufuor for a dedication ceremony at the new HopeXchange Medical Center, a state-of-the-art breast cancer diagnostic and treatment facility.

“I’m hoping to dispel some very prevalent myths about what causes breast cancer and to break down some barriers for Ghanaian women,” said Union. “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem— so do breast self-exams and go see a doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment will literally save your life.”

Celebrity Designed Corsets On Auction

Some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities have teamed up to design a series of corsets to be auctioned off in October.

Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, and Jessica Biel are just some of the stars who have submitted designs for the 4th annual Frederick’s Of Hollywood Celebrity Corset Auction. The event, which is being run in conjunction with the internet charity auction site Clothes Off Our Back, will raise money for a variety of children’s charities, including Feeding America, a non-profit organization that benefits the hungry, The Art of Elysium, which uses art to help the sick, and World Education, a charity that provides training to underprivileged children around the world. Some of the proceeds will also go towards research into autism.

“In previous years, we got $18,000 for Charlize Theron's corset and $10,000 for Nicole Kidman's," said Frederick’s of Hollywood’s Erin Dominguez. “Each year we set the bar higher and hope to get more.”
