The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact are proud to announce an all-star cast for the West Coast premiere of “8,” a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black and directed by acclaimed actor and director and AFER Founding Board Member Rob Reiner.

“8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry.

Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk and the new critically-acclaimed film J. Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

UCLA Neurosurgery will tonight host the Visionary Ball 2011, with guests including Michael Caine and John Stamos.

Honorees of the event will include Jones Apparel Group chairman Sidney Kimmel, whose Foundation for Cancer Research has supported the work of countless researchers and physicians fighting the battle against cancer, as well as Bob Saget, Dr Louis J. The inaugural Visionary Ball was held in 2005 to celebrate patient successes and provide guests with a first-hand view of innovative technologies used by UCLA neurosurgeons. Rob Lowe has joined Valspar Paint and Habitat for Humanity International in unveiling Valspar Hands for Habitat, an initiative to auction the handprints of celebrities and notable personalities to benefit Habitat for Humanity’s relief efforts in Haiti.

Habitat has set a goal to serve 50,000 families impacted by Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, helping move them toward safe, secure and permanent housing. Those donating to the auction created their handprints using Valspar paint.

Jamie Lee Curtis and husband Christopher Guest have stood up for animal rights after their daughter alerted them to a video showing abuse at Conklin’s dairy farm in Ohio.

“She was overcome with grief that human beings could inflict such cruelty and unconscious hatred at the most benign of creatures and their infants,” wrote the couple in The Huffington Post. "The shocking images were too much for her father and me but we watched enough to know where it led.

“We challenge you to have the courage, as the brave person who filmed this did, to open your doors and your hearts.
