Kobe Bryant Hits China For Charity

Basketball star Kobe Bryant is currently touring Asia, and was in China during the weekend to launch a new charity initiative.

The Kobe Bryant China Fund will partner with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation to raise money within China for education and health programs. Bryant’s existing fund, the Kobe Bryant Family Foundation, will also educate school students in the U.S. about Chinese language and culture. It will pay the salaries of four teachers to teach Mandarin and Chinese culture to middle-school students.

Bryant is touring Asia to share his basketball skills through the “NIKE Champion Returns – Kobe Training Camp”.

“The kids in China are brilliant and they continue to amaze me every time I’m here,” said the Los Angeles Laker in Shanghai on Saturday. “I’m pleased to see these talented players and I know they have trained very hard to get to where they are today. My goal is to inspire these guys to work even harder to improve their skills and never give up their vision of becoming great players.”

Stars To Attend Charity Sports Spectacular

The 24th annual Cedars-Sinai Sports Spectacular is to take place in LA this Sunday, June 7.

This year’s honorees are Laila Ali, Ryan Sheckler and Dwayne Wade, and celebrities expected to attend include Snoop Dogg, Joel Madden, Tom Arnold and many more.

The Cedars-Sinai Sports Spectacular has been heralded by the Los Angeles Times as the premier sports awards dinner in the country. This exciting charity event was established in 1986 in response to the promise of genetic research leading to the understanding of numerous genetic diseases found in children as well as adults.

The Sports Spectacular has provided over $18 million to benefit the life-saving work of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Genetics Institute. The Institute’s focus is to provide expert consultation and cutting edge research to find new and improved methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment for all types of genetic disorders, including mental retardation, dwarfism, cystic fibrosis, deafness and malformation syndromes, as well as common diseases of adulthood, such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. The event also benefits the Sports Spectacular Fellowship Endowment, which supports the training of five research Fellows in various medical fields at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

One night each year, the Sports Spectacular brings together a sold-out audience of over 1800 guests, including executives from the investment banking, entertainment, legal, and sports communities, with over 80 world-class athletes. It is a time for these athletes to pay tribute to their communities, fans and to all those who suffer from a genetic birth disorder. Together, the table patrons and athletes enjoy an exclusive silent auction followed by a moving awards ceremony in tribute to the event’s chosen honorees. In its 23 year history, the Sports Spectacular has honored some of the most prestigious athletes including Muhammad Ali, Kobe Bryant, Barry Bonds, Shaquille O’Neal, Wayne Gretzky, Joe DiMaggio, Tony Hawk, Emmitt Smith, Marcus Allen, Wilt Chamberlain, Joe Montana, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Lisa Leslie, Willie Shoemaker and many more.

Stars Expected At Cathy's Kids Gala Tonight

Celebrities from sports, TV and film are expected to attend the 5th anniversary gala of the Cathy’s Kids Foundation later today, Friday April 17.

Cathy’s Kids was founded by Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom in March 2004 to make a positive impact on the lives of under-privileged children, as well as target a disease that has played a significant role in Lamar’s life, cancer. Lamar lost his mother to stomach cancer and is committed to help causes that are focused on finding a cure and helping people who suffer from the disease.

The gala starts at 6pm at the Roosevelt Hotel Grand Ballroom on Hollywood Blvd, and celebrities expected include the entire Laker team including Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher, as well as Dania Ramirez, Nicky Hilton, David Katzenberg, Milla Jovovich, David Arquette, Audrina Patridge, Paris Hilton, Sanaa Lathan, Shawne Merrima, Brandon Marshall, Omar Epps, Christina Milian, Al Shear, Sean Riggs, Jason Steed, Black Thomas, Claudia Jordan, Faith Evans and many others.

Supporting A Colorful Vision Of Hollywood

The 15th annual Diversity Awards, a night when Hollywood celebrates diversity in the fields of film and television, took place at Universal Studios on November 17. The event is a benefit for the Multicultural Motion Picture Association’s (MMPA) Educational and Development Scholarship Fund, which helps talented and dedicated students seeking entry into the film and television professions.

The black tie event was open to the public at a ticket price of $300.00, and included a live auction conducted during the dinner in an effort to raise funds for the scholarship fund. A signed guitar by the members of R&B group Outkast was among the items for bid. A basketball signed by the original members of the Olympic Dream Team, including Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson, was also up for sale, and from the newer regime of basketball fame, there was a sneaker autographed by Kobe Bryant.

Celebrities of varied cultural backgrounds, including those of British, Haitian, Indian, Latino, Italian, and American descent, came to present awards and support the event. Antonio Sabato Jr, Tatayana Ali, Sharon Leal, Kel Mitchell, Kal Penn, Sally Richardson, Michael DeLorenzo, and Romeo were just a few of the stars of the film, television and music worlds to attend.

Oscar Torre, of the CBS hit “Cane”, expressed his excitement about presenting an award to “The Bronx is Burning”, a miniseries that represents multiple cultures. In a red carpet interview, Torre shared his sentiments about working on “Cane”: “I grew up watching very few Latinos on TV and when I would see them… they would be playing criminals, delinquents, and maids. It is great to do a show about Latinos, and Latinos doing well.”

Heroes star Jimmy-Jean Louis – commonly known as “The Haitian” – presented an award to his “Phat Girlz” co-star, Monique. Answering the question of how important it was to present drama that is diverse, Louis said “It is a shame that we have to make it a point, nowadays, when it should be normal to see all kinds of people on TV.” He also spoke proudly of the diversity on Heroes, “It has Japanese, Indians, Blacks, Haitians, Latinos and it is doing really well. The whole world is watching. Hopefully, in the next few years, there will be more shows like that which will bring people closer together to being able to accept each other.”

The awards gala opened with a spirited song and dance featuring moments from High School Musical 2, in homage to Kenny Ortega, winner of the award for Best Director of a Comedy or Musical for the blockbuster Disney sequel. Other distinguished award honorees included Leonardo DiCaprio and fellow producers of the eco-crisis documentary The 11th Hour, which received the award for Best Documentary.

Currently starring in American Gangster, Idris Elba took home the award for Best Actor in a Drama for Daddy’s Little Girls. When asked what it meant to him to receive the Diversity Award in this category, he replied “It’s huge! The Diversity Award is a great award to get as a best actor…this is actually my first award ever. It’s also great to show there is diversity in our industry. The fact that a black man in a predominately black film can win this award is a huge step forward.”

Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelly won the Nova award for their artistic performance in the cult-classic turned hit summer film Hairspray. The Nova award is for rising young stars. Other Diversity Award winners included actor Jon Heder, and the casts of House, The Office, Shark, and Passions.

Vijay Makes Charity Work In India a Big Deal

Former tennis star Vijay Amritraj is not only devoted to calling attention to the plight of those in need in India, he also backs up his devotion to these needs by hosting two charity events back to back.

At seven AM on Friday morning Amritraj hosted his 2nd Annual Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. Among the celebs to support the golf event were Golden Globe Winner Elke Sommer, Wonder Woman movie star Cathy Lee Crosby, James Sikking (Hill Street Blues/Doogie Howser), former soap star Tom Hallick and it was quite a big deal when two of the game show models from the hit Deal or No Deal hit the course at Simi Valley’s Lost Canyons Golf Club.

The day of efforts to raise money included raffles, silent and live auction items. Among the silent auction items included tickets donated by the Tiger Woods Foundation to the Masters champion play.

The next evening Vijay hosted a Gala Banquet at the Beverly Hilton. Chuck Norris was honored at the gala for his work with children. One of the evening’s hosts was Parminder Nagra of Bend It Like Beckham fame and the tv series ER. Parminder looked absolutely stunning in her pink Sari. Many of the Celeb Golfers returned for round 2 of the charity oriented weekend. Tom Hallick conducted the live auction. Briefcase #18 model A.K.A Marisa Petroro modeled beautiful jewelry during the live auction. However, the biggest live auction prize of the night was comprised of roundtrip airfare to London, the two tickets to join Vijay at Wimbledon and then join him for dinner. This prize went for $30,000.

Determined to generate the most money he could for the foundation, Vijay offered to the same opportunity to the bidder who would match $30,000. Much to his pleasure, someone did make a matching bid.

The silent auction offered a wide variety of great items including a sneaker autographed by LA Lakers star Kobe Bryant, reserved seating to see Dr. Phil McGraw’s and Jay Leno’s shows.

Vijays says, “Since my appointment as UN ambassodor of Peace, I have seen the first-hand magnitude of a plight that exists all around us. The more I saw, the more it became obvious to me that something had to be done…” The Vijay Amritraj Foundation helps with a multiple causes in India which include helping those with HIV/AIDS, education of women, children and the blind.
