Michael Jackson And Greenpeace Honored At Save The World Awards

The 2009 Save The World Awards were held in Austria on July 24, and honored Michael Jackson for his charity work.

Held at the Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant in Lower Austria, the evening was filled with many moving moments, emotional highlights and important messages with the motto “Heal The World”.

The first global honors presented to exceptional individuals and organizations working toward a peaceful, sustainable and livable future was hosted by Hollywood star and fashion icon, Andie MacDowell. 2,500 guests at the grand event, and millions of people around the world, followed a pioneering TV gala dealing with important issues accompanied by numerous music and show highlights. Michael Jackson posthumously received a 2009 SAVE THE WORD AWARD for his many humanitarian contributions. His brother Jermaine, who performed the songs “Smile” and “I’ll be there,” accepted this special award in Michael’s honor.

The Awards also honored Carl Lewis for his charity work “to empower youth, adults and families through Track & Field activities, and to enhance their life condition through wellness and education.” Several non-profit agencies were also honored, including Greenpeace.

“[Greenpeace is] unbelievably persistent, to the point of irritation,” said the organizers. "However, they have been undoubtedly successful regardless of their methods. We have their perseverance to thank that the world has taken notice and for increasing environmental awareness, as well as for initiating the Kyoto agreements.

“Their engineers developed the “Greenfreeze” technology for the first climate and ozone-friendly refrigerator that, in the meantime, has become the industry standard, significantly reducing greenhouse gases.

“Their campaign for “greener electronics” forced an entire industry to produce environmental-friendly appliances. Energy saving has evolved into one of the most important sales arguments for everything from the computer to the car industry.

“Energy responsibility is an ongoing process. There is much going on and now it is the time to act – and Greenpeace is acting in all our best interests.”

Thomas Henningsen, coordinator of Greenpeace’s international climate work and who collected the award, stressed, “Climate change is by far the most serious and urgent threat facing the world. It’s not too late, we can still avert climate catastrophe, but we need to see urgent action, now. If world leaders fail to act then our future will be characterized by poverty, resource wars, mass migration, mass starvation and mass extinction.”

“We can use new technology, and start making the changes that obviously need to be made. There are better ways and it does cost money, but we are going to have to do it,” said Andie MacDowell.

Jermaine Jackson, who accepted a posthumous award for his brother, said, “What Greenpeace is doing is definitely representative of what Michael’s messages have been in his music. It’s up to all of us, together, to make a change. World leaders should take a look at what we’re trying to say with music: Heal the world, make this a better place!”

Hollywood Beauties Give Signatures For Good

Friday, February 20, saw a flock of Hollywood beauties turn out at the Montblanc Signature for Good event in Los Angeles.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of 12 unique portraits featuring twelve world-famous Hollywood actresses. Each actress is part of a new campaign and is featured in posters for UNICEF’s childhood reading project on behalf of MontBlanc, the jewelry and pen manufacturer that is an important international partner of the organization.

Present at the event were Reese Witherspoon, Eva Longoria, Sienna Miller, Lucy Liu, Emily Blunt, Susan Sarandon, Marcia Cross, Andie MacDowell, Hilary Swank and many others.

Stars Come Out For The Congo

On Wednesday, February 18, the stars came out to join Children Mending Hearts for an event honoring International Medical Corps for their dedication in supporting the women and children victimized by war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The event was hosted by writer/producer Grant Heslov – of “Good Night and Good Luck” – and his wife Lysa at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. With Oscar week at a fever pitch, the A-list crowd was in town to support a good cause and listen to the musical styling of Sheryl Crow. Anderson Cooper was also honored for his work

In attendance for the event were Alyssa Milano – looking stunning in red satin – Ben Affleck, Joel Madden, Hank Azaria and many others.

When asked about his show of support for the event, Affleck replied: “I am involved because I spent some time with the international medical corps in the refugee camps they work in Goma and North Kebo which is in the Eastern Congo as well as a little bit in Uganda, Tanzania and Sudan. I got a chance to see what their work was like…I have personally seen them save lives and I was so struck by it that the least I could do was come to a party.”

The Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered 20 years of continuous fighting which has led to an estimated 5.4 million deaths. Lysa Heslov, has personally traveled the DR Congo in January of 2009. She filmed her efforts to raise awareness.

While on the red carpet, actor Hank Azaria admitted that events like this one help to raise awareness for him.

Actress Andie MacDowell was also in attendance and shared her thoughts with The Associated Press: “I want to participate in education and teaching people about what’s happening in the Congo, because I think unfortunately we don’t know. And I think knowledge is everything and once people understand what’s happening and start voicing their opinions about what’s happening – to women particularly in the Congo, about all these women being raped – we can make a change. People are powerful.”

Bid On A Vespa Signed By The Stars For Charity

Stand Up To Cancer recently teamed up with Island Def Jam records to launch an exciting new star-studded charity auction.

Celebrity guests at the record label’s VIP lounge at the Sundance Film Festival had the chance to sign a Vespa S50, and now the charity is selling the bike to the highest bidder.

Stars who have signed their name on the item include Alan Cumming, Andie MacDowell, Anne Heche, Christie Brinkley, Dominic Cooper, Hoobastank, Robin Thicke, Terrell Owens, Wesley Snipes, Christina Milian, Kevin Sorbo, Razorlight, Jon Mclaughlin and many more.

Stand Up To Cancer is a non-profit organization that aims to raise money for cancer researchers and scientists to come together and reach their common goal: the cure for cancer. Last September they held a huge star-studded telethon to raise money and awareness for their cause. Simulcast live on NBC, ABC, and CBS, the telethon featured celebrities such as Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry, Forest Whitaker and Casey Affleck reading accounts of people battling cancer, as well as musical items, comedy sketches, and the opportunity for people to ring up and pledge donations – with stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, America Ferrera and Kirsten Dunst answering the phones.

Get Ready For The Carousel Of Hope This Weekend

The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this weekend to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 25, and will honor Denzel Washington for his charity work.

This year celebrates 30 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 18th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.

The gala will feature performances from Josh Groban, the Jonas Brothers, Katharine McPhee and many more under the music direction of David Foster. The guest list is expected to be huge, with stars such as Tom Arnold, Melanie Griffith & Antonio Banderas, Halle Berry, Valerie Bertinelli, Lara Flynn Boyle, Bo Derek, Geena Davis, Daisy Fuentes, Selena Gomez, Kelsey Grammar, Tom Hanks, Taraji P. Henson, Anjelica Huston, Magic Johnson, Dr. Phil McGraw, Holly Robinson-Peete & Rodney Peete, Nicole Richie, Jane Seymour, Nicollette Sheridan, Forest Whitaker and James Woods all expected to attend. Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell Fight Cancer Together

On November 7th, Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell co-hosted L’Oréal’s “A Night Of Hope” event at Murano in Los Angeles. A silent auction of exceptional photography, fabulous fashion, and accessories from big names including Chanel, Vuitton and De Beers raised money for the benefit of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF), a charity that L’Oréal has supported for a decade.

OCRF is dedicated to research and awareness for ovarian cancer, which claims over 15,000 lives in the US alone each year. The problem with this type of cancer is that there is no effective method of early detection, resulting in late diagnosis in 75 percent of cases, too often too late.

Says L’Oréal Paris president Carol J. Hamilton, “Since 1997, we have helped to raise over $13 million to fund life-saving research and to promote awareness building programs to help empower women to make educated choices about their health and well-being.”

Besides L’Oréal’s search for cure donations and awareness programs, the company also contributes through the sales of signature cosmetics and jewelry collections that are available for purchase online. These include “Color of Hope” cosmetics and jewelry to which a sterling silver pendant and earrings were added this year, as well as a special diamond necklace to commemorate the A Night Of Hope event.

Other L’Oréal spokespeople in attendance included Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, and Dayle Haddon.

Coffee and Cookies to Cure Cancer

Nonni’s Biscotti, maker of traditional Italian biscotti, has taken up cause with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Nonni’s will auction over 50 coffee mugs, each autographed by a different celebrity, and donate the total proceeds to Komen for the Cure.

Celebrities such as Andie MacDowell, Mimi Rogers, Jennifer Tilly, Montel Williams, James Woods, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lil’ Kim have given their signatures to the mugs for auction. Now, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the eBay Giving Works site has posted the auction items.

Nancy Brinker created Susan G. Komen for the Cure in honor of her dying sister’s wish to speed up research and, meanwhile, make the treatment process a little more esthetic and feminine friendly. A global breast cancer movement was launched, “fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.”

Nonni’s Biscotti’s strong connection with women was the motivation to form a partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Says Nonni’s marketing manager Matt Duffy, “We are proud to help raise funds for research, education, screening and treatment that will hopefully eliminate this disease one day. We hope this charity auction will not only help raise funds, but also increase awareness about breast cancer.”

Nonni’s is also offering pink boxes of biscotti. Customers can enter the UPC code from the box at the Nonni’s website until the end of February, and 75 cents will be donated to Komen for the Cure.
