Feeding America Launches Hunger Action Month With Celebrity Help

This September, Feeding America – the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief organization – is encouraging people from all walks of life to raise awareness for hunger relief. Hunger Action Month is an effort to mobilize the public to raise awareness and take action in support of domestic hunger relief.

As shown by Feeding America’s recent study, Map the Meal Gap, one in six Americans suffer from hunger.

Point Awards Honor Celebrity LGBT Champions

The Point Foundation is set to honor champions of the LBGT Community at a Red Carpet celebration this weekend.

Awards will be presented at Point’s fourth annual Los Angeles benefit, Point Honors, to be held on September 25, 2010 at Raleigh Studios Hollywood (650 N. Bronson Avenue).

Honorees this year include Tony Award winner, Alan Cumming and actress Brittany Snow, along with luxury automotive brand Audi, Point Foundation executives and other champions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Padres Contra el Cancer (PADRES), a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life for Latino children with cancer and their families, will celebrate its 25th Anniversary at this year’s fund-raising gala.

The “EL SUENO DE ESPERANZA” gala returns to the historic Hollywood Palladium, with festivities beginning at 6:30 PM, paying tribute to PADRES’ extraordinary children and families, while at the same time raise funds for the lifesaving work of the organization. Honorees this year include Comedian/TV Host George Lopez and Enrique Alejo, long-time supporter of PADRES and Owner of Liborio Markets.

Wyclef Jean And Bono Receive ‘Ripple Of Hope Award’

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer Wyclef Jean, and (RED) founder/U2 front man Bono, were honored this week at a ceremony thrown by The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, where each were awarded the ‘Ripple of Hope’ Award.

“As champions of justice, Bono and Wyclef have brought the national spotlight to human rights violations, empowered local activists, and transformed the lives of millions of people living in poverty from Port-Au-Prince to Darfur,” said Kerry Kennedy, founder of the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. “Their efforts evoke the spirit of my father and we are honored to recognize them.”

Jean was honored for his work to inspire change in his native country of Haiti through his Yéle Haiti Foundation.

Michael Phelps To Play In Charity Poker Tournament

Michael Phelps might be excellent in the pool, but he will have another sort of challenge when he competes in the Sunflower Children 2nd annual Texas Hold’em Charity Benefit on November 21.

Sunflower Children is a humanitarian aid organization that provides survival and development care for the forgotten children of the world. Their efforts encompass medical, nutritional, psychological, educational, adoption and other humanitarian support that nurtures survival, health, growth and hope for orphaned, disabled, abandoned, refugee and impoverished children.

Eva Longoria will be in Texas on October 18 for the second annual Eva’s Heroes Celebrity Golf Tournament.

“I just drive the golf cart,” Longoria told Conexión. “I go to each hole and talk to everyone. I’m spread really thin that day so I wouldn’t have time to play.”

Following the success of last year’s event, Eva’s Heroes is hosting the event at the Resort Course at La Cantera in San Antonio to benefit the organization’s mission of enriching the lives of those with developmental challenges. The day’s event will also include a fashion show hosted by Mario Lopez.

Hot In Hollywood is a celebration benefiting charities dedicated to the education, prevention, testing and treatment of HIV/AIDS. In just three years, this celebrity fundraiser has become one of the hottest events in Los Angeles and this year featured live musical performances, DJs, and an exciting auction – in which Katherine Heigl paid $8,000 for a package trip to Jamaica.

“I had so much fun hosting Hot In Hollywood III,” said Ferrara. “It is such a great space to make a fool out of myself! It was professional chaos!”

The American Red Cross unveiled their 7th annual National Celebrity Cabinet yesterday, February 28, with 15 new members from movies, sports, and television.

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk will join former Beverly Hills 90210 and Dancing With The Stars alum Jennie Garth, Heroes’ Masi Oka, Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, House M.D.’s Lisa Edelstein and Kal Penn, Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, Everyone Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, Hairspray’s Brittany Snow, two-time NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, New York Yankee Robinson Cano, NFL star Matt Leinart, and Life Coach Iyanla Vanzant in the 2008 Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, part of a mobilizing force to urge people to perform extraordinary life-saving acts in dire circumstances through the assistance of the Red Cross.

Actress Eva Longoria launched her first annual Celebrity Golf Tournament in October to raise funds for her nonprofit charity, Eva’s Heroes. Biting her nails down to the last minute, Longoria said she was overjoyed by the outpouring of support.

Joined by fellow stars the likes of Ana Ortiz, Robert Gossett, Kyle Maclachlan, Jesse Borrego, Lupe Ontiveros, Rita Verreos, Mario Lopez and George Lopez, who provided entertainment as well as celebrity pull, the goal was to raise $200,000 for programs and enrichment centers that will provide unique after school experiences for developmentally challenged children and young adults.

Having grown up with an intellectually disabled sister, Longoria considers her sister her hero. “She has given me so much inspiration and hope to face everyday with the strength and courage she has had her whole life. She has never seen herself with a disability and only sees the good in everyone and everything.”
