Bob Hope Classic Attracts Celebrity Players

Thirteen-time Pro Bowler and all-time leading NFL scorer Jerry Rice, legendary guitarist and Rock And Roll Hall of Fame member Stephen Stills, and actors Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Nash Bridges), Kyle Maclachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives), William Devane (24, The West Wing) and Bruce McGill (Animal House, The Legend of Bagger Vance) have joined the list of athletes and celebrities committed to playing in the 50th Bob Hope Classic Hosted by Arnold Palmer, Jan. 19-25, 2009.

Other celebrity participants for the Classic, a desert tradition since 1960, include former Major League Baseball and National Football League standout Bo Jackson, Tampa Bay Rays third baseman and 2008 American League Rookie of the Year Evan Longoria, famed musicians Huey Lewis, Michael Bolton, Alice Cooper, Don Felder (formerly of the Eagles), Josh Kelley and country singer Clay Walker, actors Kurt Russell, Chris O’Donnell, Thomas Gibson, Oliver Hudson and Jeffrey Donovan; actor/comedian Kevin Nealon, actor/game show host John O’Hurley, timeless New York Yankees baseball legend Yogi Berra, comedian Tom Dreesen, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and sportscaster Dan Fouts, Hall of Fame sportscaster Keith Jackson, television financial host Joe Kernen, Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, former Green Bay Packers wide receiver and NFL analyst Sterling Sharpe, and former Vice President Dan Quayle. The celebrity field’s schedule is as follows: Wednesday, Jan. 21, SilverRock Resort; Thursday, Jan. 22, Bermuda Dunes Country Club; Friday, Jan. 23, Nicklaus Private at PGA West; Saturday, Jan. 24, Arnold Palmer Private at PGA WEST.

PGA TOUR professional D.J. Trahan will return to defend his 2008 Bob Hope Classic title, which he won by three strokes after firing a final-round, 7-under-par 65 to finish at 26-under 334 over 90 holes. All five days of The Classic will be televised on Golf Channel. At stake is a purse of $5.1 million, $918,000 to the winner.

Palmer, a sporting and Coachella Valley icon, played in the tournament 42 of its 50 years and is the only five-time champion, winning the inaugural tournament in 1960 and again in 1962, ’68, ’71 and ’73. He won a total of 62 PGA TOUR titles. The five-day Classic features 128 top PGA TOUR professionals and 384 amateur contestants, including a stellar list of 30 celebrities.

As it celebrates its 50th anniversary tournament, the Bob Hope Classic’s host course will be the Palmer Private at PGA West. Other courses in the 2009 rotation include Bermuda Dunes Country Club, an original tournament course, La Quinta’s SilverRock Resort, which debuted in 2008, and the Nicklaus Private Course at PGA West, in the rotation for the first time.

In 49 years, the tournament has donated more than $45 million to charities throughout the Coachella Valley, including the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America, Habitat For Humanity and many more. James Caan Joins Stars At Callaway Charity Golf Event

The Callaway Golf Foundation will host it’s second professional/celebrity golf tournament, the Callaway Golf Foundation Challenge, at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles on December 15 to benefit groundbreaking cancer research projects supported by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF).

Professional golfers will be paired with actors, business leaders and entertainment industry executives for a round of golf, while amateur golfers will have a chance to improve their swing at the David Leadbetter Clinic, taught by the infamous golfing instructor himself.

Christopher Reeve Foundation To Make Magic Happen

Making Magic Happen, the 4th Annual Los Angeles Gala for the Christopher Reeve Foundation, will take place next Tuesday, December 2.

The evening will honor actress Jane Seymour with the 2008 Philanthropy Award and former Indy Racing League Driver Sam Schmidt with the 2008 Visionary Leadership Award.

Christopher Reeve – who was paralyzed when he fell off a horse in 1995 – first met Jane Seymour when they co-starred in the 1980 fantasy romance, “Somewhere in Time.” They remained friends for over 20 years until his death in 2004. After his accident, Seymour was inspired by his extraordinary strength and will to live. His inspiration caused her to reach out to mentor young people with spinal cord injury.

Sam Schmidt was left paralyzed after a racing accident in 2000, but regained control of his life thanks to the support of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, an organization dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

Stars expected to attend the event include Marcia Cross, Jennie Garth, Kyle Maclachlan, Brandon Routh and many others.

Eva Longoria To Tee Off For Her Heroes

Eva Longoria will be in Texas on October 18 for the second annual Eva’s Heroes Celebrity Golf Tournament.

“I just drive the golf cart,” Longoria told Conexión. “I go to each hole and talk to everyone. I’m spread really thin that day so I wouldn’t have time to play.”

Following the success of last year’s event, Eva’s Heroes is hosting the event at the Resort Course at La Cantera in San Antonio to benefit the organization’s mission of enriching the lives of those with developmental challenges. The day’s event will also include a fashion show hosted by Mario Lopez.

“San Antonio has embraced Eva’s Heroes with open arms and we are fortunate to be part of a community that cares so much,” said Longoria. “After the tremendous success of the first golf tournament, Eva’s Heroes is ready for another wonderful event in San Antonio.”

Last year’s goal was to raise $200,000 for programs and enrichment centers that will provide unique after school experiences for developmentally challenged children and young adults. And with the help of Ana Ortiz, Robert Gossett, Kyle Maclachlan, Jesse Borrego, Lupe Ontiveros, Rita Verreos, and George Lopez, that aim was easily reached. This year will feature appearances from Kyle Maclachlan and Mark Wahlberg.

Kyle Maclachlan To Front Women's Cancer PSA

Desperate Housewives star Kyle Maclachlan is to feature in a new cancer awareness advertisement.

The 49-year-old former Twin Peaks actor is to front a new public service announcement on behalf of the Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative urging women to seek early detection for ovarian cancer. His mother died of ovarian cancer in 1986, and MacLachlin wants to honor her memory by taking part in the campaign.

The Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative was established through $2 million of donations to the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Programs. The initiative aims to fast-track breakthrough treatments and tests at leading cancer institutions to beat ovarian cancer.

Earlier this year, Halle Berry was announced as the 2008 Ambassador for the initiative’s public service campaign, and has been appearing in magazine and newspaper advertisements for the program.

Actress Eva Longoria launched her first annual Celebrity Golf Tournament in October to raise funds for her nonprofit charity, Eva’s Heroes. Biting her nails down to the last minute, Longoria said she was overjoyed by the outpouring of support.

Joined by fellow stars the likes of Ana Ortiz, Robert Gossett, Kyle Maclachlan, Jesse Borrego, Lupe Ontiveros, Rita Verreos, Mario Lopez and George Lopez, who provided entertainment as well as celebrity pull, the goal was to raise $200,000 for programs and enrichment centers that will provide unique after school experiences for developmentally challenged children and young adults.

Having grown up with an intellectually disabled sister, Longoria considers her sister her hero. “She has given me so much inspiration and hope to face everyday with the strength and courage she has had her whole life. She has never seen herself with a disability and only sees the good in everyone and everything.”

Longoria saw first hand throughout her life the growth that individuals with developmental disabilities can achieve through special programs and interaction, and is now determined to make them available nationwide through her own Eva’s Heroes Enrichment Centers. The first one will open in San Antonio very soon, and will serve 30 children.

“Her heart is in the right place,” said comedian George Lopez. “She’s the most beautiful person.”
