America Ferrera To Talk Education And Giving Back

America Ferrera, the award-winning actress who is best known for her portrayal of Betty Suarez in the hit comedy Ugly Betty, will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Ferrera’s role in this TV show landed her some of the highest accolades in the entertainment industry: an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as ALMA and Imagen awards.

Her starring role in Real Women Have Curves resulted in numerous other honors, including a Sundance Jury Award for best actress. Ferrera both starred in and was executive producer of The Dry Land, the story of a soldier returning home to Texas after the war in Iraq, which won the award for Best International Film at the 2010 Edinburgh Film Festival.

Work Starts On America Ferrera's Charity School In Mali

Family, friends and fans of America Ferrera have come together to help the Emmy Award-winning actress meet her fundraising goal to build a school in Diassadeni village in the Sikasso District of Mali.

America launched her Build a School campaign on Facebook Causes last December, prior to her trip to the West African country as Save the Children’s Artist Ambassador for global education.

Fans contributed to America’s cause through Facebook, as well as through a New York City art auction hosted by the cast of ABC’s Ugly Betty this past April.

America Ferrera To Auction Ugly Betty Paintings For Charity

America Ferrera and cast members from Ugly Betty will host an auction this month to support Save the Children and help build a school in Mali.

The auction will feature a paintings of the Ugly Betty star for an episode titled The Passion of Betty. America and her fellow cast members will attend the event to talk about the show and the work of Save the Children, and winning bidders will also receive a framed and autographed cast photo. Winners of bids over $3000 will have their photo taken with America, who is a Save the Children Education Ambassador.

“For the school to be built, we need to raise a minimum of $44,000,” said the star. “The school will be complete with 3 classrooms, a headmaster’s room and bathrooms for both boys and girls. Once we reach our goal and the school has been built, Save the Children will provide the skilled teachers and learning resources the children need to make the most of their education. If we raise less than $44,000 or exceed our goal and raise more than $44,000, the funds will be put to good use to support Save the Children’s education programs in Mali.”

Ugly Betty To Highlight Malaria Issues

Stars from Ugly Betty – including America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams – have teamed up with the United Nations to raise awareness of malaria.

The first episode of the new season of the ABC show – which starts on October 16 – will feature the U.N.’s Nothing But Nets initiative and a plotline that will “reveal the role mosquito nets play in preventing the disease”.

The show is the first comedy to be shot inside the U.N.’s New York City headquarters.

A multitude of stars came out on Friday night as part of the Stand Up To Cancer television extravaganza to raise money for cancer research.
