Black Celebrities Unite Against AIDS

More than 60 Black celebrities – including Samuel L. Jackson, Laila Ali, Tatyana Ali, Anthony Anderson, Bill Duke, Dennis Haysbert, Nia Long, Chris Massey, Kyle Massey, Lisa Masterson and Shaun Robinson – have united with Greater Than AIDS to bring attention to the severe and disproportionate epidemic facing Black Americans and reduce the stigma surrounding the disease.

Black Americans account for half of the approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in this country today — and 44 percent of new infections — while representing just 12 percent of the population. Blacks are also more likely to die of AIDS as compared to other racial and ethnic groups.

Coinciding with National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (Feb. 7), Greater Than AIDS is debuting new public service ads (PSAs), available here, coordinated social media posts and other messages from popular Black television and film actors, directors, producers, and others in Hollywood about the devastating effect of HIV/AIDS in the Black community. Many of the participating talent spoke about people they knew who are living with or have died from the disease. Participating talent will be supporting the campaign’s themes of unity, hope and empowerment through their own Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms and through personal appearances.

The 11th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI), hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino at Shadow Creek, returns to Las Vegas for the second consecutive year March 29-April 1, 2012.

The stars of the 10th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational gathered at ARIA Resort & Casino for the highly anticipated signature MJCI Celebration during the weekend.

Headlining the celebrity charity gala was Grammy Award-winning artist Jamie Foxx, who put on a special private performance for the golfing celebrities and invited guests. World-famous dance crew Jabbawockeez, funnyman Kevin Hart and R&B sensations Boyz II Men opened for Foxx at the gala. The celebration followed the final round of MJCI’s Celebrity-Amateur play at Shadow Creek. In particularly good moods were athletes Jerome Bettis, Toni Kukoc and Drew Brees who, with their four-person amateur teams, were Friday’s top finishers with scores of 55.

In an effort to fight AIDS stigma and raise awareness of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in black communities, several black celebrities have joined the Black AIDS Institute to host the Hollywood premiere of “The Other City,” the groundbreaking documentary that shines a light on the HIV/AIDs epidemic in Washington, DC.

With a host committee that includes Danny Glover, attendees will include Magic Johnson, Vanessa Williams, Laila Ali, Jenifer Lewis (The Princess & the Frog), Monique Coleman (High School Musical) and many more.

Sheckler Foundation Announces Date for Annual Charity Event

Skateboarding phenomenon, Ryan Sheckler, has announced the date for his Third Annual Celebrity Skins Golf Tournament to be played at the Trump National Golf Course in Palos Verdes California on October 19, 2010.

Founded in 2008, the Sheckler Foundation was created as an avenue for Ryan Sheckler, his family, friends and business associates to give back to the community and industry that they are so grateful for. Fueled by the ultimate goal of contributing to the many causes that directly benefit and enrich the lives of children, it is also their desire to support and fund programs that help injured action sports athletes.

The money raised through the Sheckler Foundation will be used to fund medical research that focuses on curing childhood disease, spinal cord injuries and enrichment programs for children in underprivileged communities.

Anthony Anderson Takes On Diabetes

As one of Hollywood’s self-proclaimed “fat funny guys,” Anthony Anderson has appeared in comedies including “Big Momma’s House” and “Kangaroo Jack,” but when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 32, Anderson found that his weight was no laughing matter.

In the October issue of Diabetes Forecast, the consumer magazine of the American Diabetes Association, Anderson opens up about incorporating diabetes management into his busy schedule and how his desire to go skydiving has inspired him to shed pounds.

It was eight years ago that Anderson started experiencing symptoms of diabetes — he was tired and lethargic. “I chalked it up to being overworked,” he tells Diabetes Forecast. “I just thought I was running myself ragged.” When other symptoms started to appear, such as constant thirst and frequent urination, he saw his doctor and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Keanu Reeves To Race For Charity Again

After winning last year’s event, actor Keanu Reeves will once again get behind the wheel for the annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity charity race at the 36th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach next month.

The celebrity race has been held every year since 1977, and has attracted stars such as Gene Hackman, Jason Bateman, Rick Schroder, Stephen Baldwin, Donny Osmond, Sean Patrick Flanery, Nancy Lieberman, Daniel Goddard and Josh Brolin. 2008’s race was won by ESPN/ABC pit reporter for NASCAR Nationwide Jamie Little.

Every year, Toyota donates $5,000 to Racing for Kids, a non-profit program benefiting children’s hospitals in Southern California, in the name of each celebrity racer, and another $5,000 to the winner’s charity of choice. The car company has donated close to $1.6 million to various children’s organizations since 1991.

New York Giant and Super Bowl Champion defensive end Justin Tuck hosted the first ever Tuck’s Celebrity Billiards Tournament in New York on Monday, July 13.

The event attracted a host of stars from music, film and sports, including John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Spike Lee, Vivica Fox, Anthony Anderson and many more.

The star-studded tournament raised $140,000 for Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy, a charity initiative founded by Justin Tuck in 2008 to encourage children to READ, UNDERSTAND, SUCCEED, and HOPE as they continue to nurture literacy in their lives. This charity program is committed to raise funds to donate books and other reading materials to benefit the local New York and Central Alabama communities.

Artists Come Out To Shake the Blues

The charity Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) held its annual concert and auctions on Thursday November, 15, 2007 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. The “Shaking the Blues” benefit supports ANSA’s work fighting HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and Africa, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Treatment Action Campaign, a grassroots organization at the forefront of South Africa’s fight against AIDS.
