Beatles legend Paul McCartney was honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year at a special event in Los Angeles on Friday, celebrating his exceptional artistic achievements as well as his philanthropic work.

The sold-out tribute to McCartney benefits MusiCares’ emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery programs. Proceeds from the annual Person of the Year tribute — now in its 22nd year — provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that members of the music community have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

Songs For Japan Raises $10 Million For Earthquake Victims

Songs For Japan, the unique, star-studded album collection created to help raise money for victims of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters, continues to benefit the survivors through Japanese Red Cross Society.

Yesterday in Tokyo, senior executives from four major music companies – EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music Group – met with Japanese Red Cross Society Vice President, Yoshiharu Otsuka, to recognise the milestone of $10 million raised and donated from the global sales of Songs For Japan. The occasion was a reception hosted by Frances Moore, chief executive of worldwide recording industry organisation IFPI.

A music industry-wide initiative, Songs For Japan is an unprecedented compilation of 38 major hits and classic tracks, including 21 Billboard Hot 100 hits and five #1s from more than 30 of the biggest names in contemporary music. The collection was rush-released worldwide on March 25 – only 14 days after the earthquake struck Japan – as a digital album via iTunes, followed by the release of a physical two-CD set.

Neil Young has announced the star-studded lineup for his annual Bridge School Celebrity Charity Benefit Concert.

The Bridge School Benefit is an annual non-profit charity concert held in Mountain View, California every October at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. The concerts are all organized by musician Neil Young and his wife, Pegi, and benefit The Bridge School, an innovative organization educating children with severe speech and physical impairments.

This year’s 25th anniversary acoustic concerts will take place on October 22 and October 23, and feature performances by Foo Fighters, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, Arcade Fire, Tony Bennett, Eddie Vedder, Diana Krall, Mumford & Sons, Beck and Jenny Lewis.

Foo Fighters Raise Charity Funds For Earthquake Victims

Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters have announced that they raised over NZ$350,000 for charity when they played a special concert in New Zealand on March 22 to raise money for victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

Over 160 people died in the earthquake that hit Christchurch on February 22, which many thousands more losing their homes and livelihoods. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was one of the first international stars to send his support to victims, promising to do something special to help: “Every little bit counts and I hope that we can see you soon and do what we can to bring a little bit of happiness back into your lives.”

He followed this promise by bringing his band to the country for a very special – and loud – one-off gig.

Celebrity charity support continues to roll in for victims of last month’s devastating earthquake in Christchurch: the Foo Fighters have just announced a charity concert in New Zealand, and Russell Crowe has been in the city to boost overseas awareness.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has confirmed he will bring his band to New Zealand next week to raise charity cash for victims of the Christchurch earthquake, after dropping hints about his plans in the aftermath of the disaster.

The band will perform at the Auckland Town Hall on March 22, with proceeds going to the New Zealand Government Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Tickets go on sale on Friday.

Carlos Santana’s plans to perform in Christchurch, New Zealand, may have been cancelled due to the deadly earthquake that hit the city on February 22, but the legendary guitarist has a message of hope for victims.

“While I live a long way from Christchurch, I have been a resident of San Francisco and I understand the power of an earthquake,” he said. "It’s still so hard to comprehend the tragedy that has happened there. The images I saw on television made me feel both grief and helplessness. So many people have been affected. I hope that everyone will do their part to help in whatever way they can to help.

“My thoughts are with all people affected in Christchurch by the earthquake. I am looking to return under better times.”

Roger Daltrey will perform The Who’s Tommy as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust’s one week series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall next month.

Neil Diamond will be honored as MusiCares Person Of The Year later tonight – Friday, February 6 – in a concert celebrating his music and humanitarian spirit.

Heading up the list of performers set to join the music legend on stage at the Los Angeles Convention Centre are Kid Rock and British band Coldplay. Also on the agenda are the Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson, Jonas Brothers, Josh Groban and Faith Hill.

Neil Diamond Donates Money To Hurricane Ike Victims

Neil Diamond has donated the profits from merchandising sales on his recent tour to the victims of Hurricane Ike.

The singer – who is to be honored as MusiCares Person of the Year in February – initially agreed to donate his merchandising sales from his shows last October to victims of the disaster, but has now turned over proceeds from every show he has played since then.

“Hurricane Ike hit southern Texas so fiercely and has been forgotten about by the rest of the country – but these people are still in desperate straits, and are in dire need of our help,” he told CNN. “I saw what was going on. The mayor of Houston took me around, and he told me about it and introduced me to some people. The next day, I drove down to some of the hardest-hit areas, and I just felt that I had to do something, and I felt that maybe my audience would help me out with it.”

Love Ride 2008 Attracts The Big Names

20,000 motorcyclists from across the U.S. and around the world rode in the 25th Annual Love Ride late last month and raised over US$1 million for Southern California-based charities.
