Kate Winslet's Celebrity Friends Wear The Golden Hat For Autism

Kate Winslet will be releasing a special book to benefit her autism charity, the Golden Hat Foundation, in April 2012, and has called on some of her famous friends to help.

The book features a collection of stunning self-portraits from celebrities and cultural luminaries, all wearing a “magical” hat to support autism awareness and outreach.

Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another. Among the participants whose photos are featured in the book are George Clooney, Anna Wintour, Ben Stiller, Brigitte Lacombe, Christina Aguilera, David Souffan, Demi Moore, Don Cheadle, Elijah Wood, Ellen Page, Javier Bardem, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jude Law, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Laura Dern, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maria Sharapova, Marion Cottillard, Meryl Streep, Michael Kors, Naomi Watts, Pedro Almodovar, Peter Sarsgaard, Ricky Gervais and many, many more.

Kate Winslet Enlists Celebrity Charity Help For New Book

Kate Winslet has asked some of her celebrity friends to wear a special “magic” hat for a new book benefiting her autism charity, the Golden Hat Foundation.

Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another. Among the participants whose photos are featured in the book are Anna Wintour, Ben Stiller, Brigitte Lacombe, Christina Aguilera, David Souffan, Demi Moore, Don Cheadle, Elijah Wood, Ellen Page, Javier Bardem, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jude Law, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Laura Dern, Liev Schreiber, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maria Sharapova, Marion Cottillard, Meryl Streep, Michael Kors, Naomi Watts, Pedro Almodovar, Peter Sarsgaard, Ricky Gervais and many, many more.

Winslet found inspiration for this project in her friends Margret Dagmar Ericsdottir and Ericsdottir"s son Keli, who lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism. Winslet met Ericsdottir when she narrated a documentary film, A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back To Autism, about the family"s mission to find a way to connect with Keli. Eventually specialists “unlocked” Keli by teaching him ways to communicate. Despite hardship, Keli now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry. One of the poems, among the many included in the book, is called “The Golden Hat,” which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Opens SOS Children's Village In India

Oscar nominated actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard have officially opened an SOS Children’s Village in India to house abandoned and orphaned children in family homes.

 The SOS Children’s Village Alibaug has been built in partnership with global lifestyle brand Esprit who have fully financed the initiative. It will accommodate 140 children, who’ll live in small groups in individual family style houses and will go to the SOS-Hermann-Gmeiner school near by the village. SOS Children’s Villages is taking care of 78 thousand children in 132 countries worldwide.

Without the SOS Children’s Village in Alibaug these children would most likely have joined the 18 million children who live or work on the streets of urban India. All SOS mothers provide a loving and safe environment for the children who have lost their families.

Stars Use Golden Globes For Charity

The stars were out at the Golden Globes in Hollywood this weekend, and many used the opportunity to raise awareness of the Haitian earthquake and ask fans to dig in their pockets and donate.

“I come to Golden Globes weekend and I am really, honestly conflicted — how to have my happy movie self in the face of everything I’m aware of in the real world,” said Meryl Streep, who picked up the Best Actress accolade for Julie and Julia. "And I want to say that’s when I have my mother’s voice coming to me, saying, ‘Shoot some money to Partners in Health, put the dress on, put on a smile and be damn grateful you have the dollars to help.’ "

The star also revealed that, when the dress comes off, it will go straight to a charity auction to raise money for victims of the disaster. Gerard Butler, Josh Brolin, Olivia Wilde and Any Poehler will also donate their Awards Night outfits to the auction – beginning on eBay on January 25.

A new video competition will give ordinary Americans the chance to impress Maggie Gyllenhaal with films about their commitment to climate change.

Thirty nine years ago, celebrities didn’t have to travel round the world to give peace a chance. They didn’t need to rush to the poorest places, be seen at the flashiest charity parties, donate their old clothes to online auctions (well, they didn’t have the internet, so that last one was definitely out of the question). All they needed to do was stay in bed. Just ask John Lennon and Yoko Ono. OK, so you can’t exactly ask John Lennon, but you get the idea. Because back in 1969, when that illustrious pair held their famous bed-ins for peace, the world was a much simpler place – people wore their hair long, their feet bare, and smiled more than today. And believe it or not, history repeated itself last week.

Award-winning actress and peace activist Maggie Gyllenhaal, founder of Peace One Day Jeremy Gilley, and Roy Kerwood, original photographer from Lennon’s 1969 Montreal Bed-in, spent the day in bed at the Ben & Jerry’s Times Square Scoop Shop in New York to launch a John Lennon tribute flavor, “Imagine Whirled Peace,” and announce a new social mission partnership between the ice cream makers and Peace One Day last week.

The bed-in followed a nation-wide competition held by Ben And Jerry’s Ice Creams to identify modern-day peace activists who embody the values set forth by Lennon through their work to create positive change in the world. The winners were presented with $10,000 each to donate to the peace charities of their choice.

March will see the opening of Katherine Heigl’s new film 27 Dresses, and to mark the occasion, 20th Century Fox is auctioning 27 celebrity dresses on eBay. Fabulous frocks from Heidi Klum, Thandie Newton, Mariah Carey, Geri Halliwell, Naomi Campbell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Alesha Dixon will be up for sale in the special event, with all proceeds going to the Lavender Trust, an initiative of the UK charity Breast Cancer Care to raise money for young breast cancer sufferers.

The auction also features a stunning white John Galliano dress worn by Kylie Minogue to Cannes 2007, and a full length silver halter top belonging to her sister, Danni Minogue. The auction starts on eBay at 7pm on March 4, and a different dress will be auctioned every day.

Kite Runner Auction Raises Afghan Hopes

Madonna, Will Ferrell and Angelina Jolie are among the many celebrities who have joined the Kite Runner Auction, which runs until the 15th of December.

The auction corresponds with the theater release of The Kite Runner on December 14th. Based on the book of the same name, the film explores the world of Amir, who returns to Afghanistan after 20 years in America to set right his past mistakes.

The book’s author Khaled Hosseini is joined in the auction by tail-signers Edward Norton, Steve Nash, Cher and Halle Berry. 75% of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to the Afghanistan Relief Organization.
