Hayden Panettiere Hits Hollywood For The Whales

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere was out-and-about in Hollywood on Sunday, November 15, to support her favorite charity – the Whaleman Foundation.

The young star hit the Beso Restaurant to attend the Foundation’s benefit event. The Whaleman Foundation is an organization that aims to educate key decision makers – while raising public awareness – on the issues that affect cetaceans (dolphins, whales & porpoises) and their critical habitats through their films and media outreach.

Panettiere is a long-time supporter of the charity’s Save The Whales Again campaign, and has often helped with initiatives to help. In October, 2007, Panettiere joined Australian actress Isabel Lucas and other activists in a peaceful protest in Japan, to raise awareness of the 25,000 dolphins slaughtered by the nation every year. The group narrowly avoided arrest over the incident, but succeeded in diverting international media to the abhorrent and barbaric practices used to butcher the animals.

Band From TV To Launch New Epilepsy Site At Charity Gig

Band From TV – the celebrity charity music group made up of stars from some of today’s most popular TV shows – is to play a special gig next month to launch a charity website set up by its founding member.

Talk About It was created by Heroes star Greg Grunberg to raise awareness of epilepsy and help educate people the world and end stigmas about seizure disorders. The site features many of his Heroes co-stars and celebrity friends, such as Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and John Mayer. Grunberg is a longtime supporter of epilepsy causes, an issue that he has been involved with since his son, Jake, was diagnosed with the condition. He is the official spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation and Epilepsy Advocate.

Grunberg started the Band From TV – which includes members such as Hugh Laurie, Teri Hatcher, Bonnie Somerville, Hayden Panettiere, Adrian Pasdar, James Denton, Jesse Spencer, and Bob Guiney – after getting a few celebrities to play together at the House Of Blues for charity. The success of that event has led to a number of gigs in the US which have, according to Hugh Laurie, “raised a gargantuan sum of money for charity.” These charities include such as Save the Children, The Art of Elysium, the Child Abuse Prevention Program and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence through the Band From TV Global Charity Trust. Band From TV recently released their first CD, Hoggin’ All The Covers, which has become a huge hit at Amazon.com and can be ordered here. Heroes star Hayden Panettiere has blogged about her conservation work with whales and dolphins.

“Anyone who knows me knows how much I love animals, and how passionate I am about protecting them,” she wrote on www.takepart.com. “When Jeff Pantukhoff, President & Founder of [”The Whaleman Foundation":http://www.looktothestars.org/charity/1007-the-whaleman-foundation], approached me about being their spokesperson 5 years ago, I jumped at the opportunity.

“The Whaleman Foundation is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is to raise public awareness on the issues that affect cetaceans (dolphins, whales & porpoises) and their ocean habitats. When I heard about the plight of the dolphins and whales and the work that Jeff was doing, getting involved was a no-brainer for me.

The actress goes on to write about her 2007 trip to Japan with Isabel Lucas in which they protested against the slaughter of dolphins.

Room 23 Opens The Lives Of Celebrities For Human Rights

A new book featuring photos of over 100 celebrities will raise money for a human rights project.

Room 23 is the brainchild of entrepreneur and philanthropist Diana Jenkins and depicts a year in the life of a Beverly Hills penthouse suite. Stars to take part in the project and allow themselves to be intimately revealed include George Clooney, Cindy Crawford, Elton John, Dennis Hopper, Larry King, Heidi Klum, Kid Rock, Lindsay Lohan, Ludacris, Moby, Hayden Panettiere, Christian Slater, Sharon Stone and many more.

The book – to be released in 120 countries on September 8 – will benefit the Sanela Diana Jenkins International Human Rights Project, a non-profit entity at the UCLA School of Law that brings war criminals to justice through legal resources and technology. Established by Bosnian-born Diana Jenkins, the project aims at developing groundbreaking approaches to advancing human rights and to training the next generation of human rights lawyers and advocates.

“When good things happen for me, I pay it forward by helping my country,” said Jenkins. “In the Bosnian-Serbian War, people lost homes, cars and money, but the greatest casualty was the loss of family and friends. No one should ever have to be a victim of human rights violations, so that is why I founded the Sanela Diana Jenkins International Human Rights Project.”

Pipeline To A Cure A Huge Success

Honorary co-chairs and surf legends Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama welcomed guests to the 2nd Annual PacSun Pipeline to a Cure event benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on Saturday night, July 18. The evening brought together the surf world to support the direct positive effect surfing has on those afflicted with cystic fibrosis and raised nearly $300,000 for research and patient care in the process. The Pipeline to a Cure campaign was initiated after research showed that young cystic fibrosis (CF) patients who surf had healthier lungs.

The event featured a special headline performance from Shiny Toy Guns which included their popular songs Ghost Town, Le Disko and We Are The One. During the 14-song set lead singer Chad Petree even brought up his close friend and publisher Tim James (along with friends Steve McClintock and Chuck Martin) for a jam session of “The Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors. The night also featured a performance from former American Idol Season 8 contestant Kai Kalama alongside his brother Ryan Kalama as part of the band Off White. Chris Cote, Editor-in-Chief of TransWorldSURF, served as emcee for the evening which included a live auction with radio personality Shawn Parr of Go Country 105. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation honored Mike Sullivan of LAcarGUY as their 2009 PacSun Pipeline to a Cure honoree. For the second year in a row, Mike Sullivan generously donated a new Toyota Prius to the opportunity drawing. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation ambassador Emily Haager was the evening’s star guest as she received warm wishes from the night’s biggest guests and gave a moving speech about her battle with CF during the program.

Kylie Minogue Performs Charity Concert At Cannes

Pop singer Kylie Minogue performed a special concert at the Miracle Africa International Fundraiser in Cannes earlier this week.

The 41-year-old sang a medley of her greatest hits at the Miracle Africa International Fundraiser, an event that aimed to raise money to help fight malaria in Africa.

“This is a very small venue compared to what I would normally do, and I’m going to absolutely love it, it just feels like a really sweaty show,” said Minogue shortly before performing at the VIP Club. “I turn around and there’s my band and we are all crammed in together.”

Famous faces spotted in the crowd included James Blunt and Hayden Panettiere.

“I think that philanthropy in any way is a good idea,” said Peaches Geldof, who also attended the show. “Any charity that raises awareness for people who are impoverished is obviously a good thing.”

“One of the things that I really saw in Africa that many people don’t realize is that malaria is the biggest issue,” added Nadia Murabet, Executive Director of the Miracle Africa International Foundation. “Yes AIDS is an issue but malaria is worse. So we really have to start moving to get it eradicated.”

There are so many children and young people out there who don’t have someone to tell them that they are doing a good job as they take part in extracurricular activities and strive to meet their goals academically.

Laguna Beach’s Casey Reinhardt established the CASEY Foundation (Children’s Alliance for the Success and Education of Youth) to fill the gap for unmotivated youth. Let her story of advocacy motivate you to help children build self-esteem and attain their goals.

Can you tell me about the success you’ve had with the CASEY Foundation?

I created the foundation in 2002 when I was in High School. I created it because my family is very involved with helping children and people in general. I found a special place in my heart for them. I wanted to create this foundation because I worked with different organizations.

In seeing my parents being very charitable, I wanted to do the same thing and I decided to create this foundation because I wanted to help kids. I know the importance of an education, and I wanted to share and bring awareness to the importance of staying in school. I really worked closely with all of the Olive Crest Children’s Foundations, which help support abused children. That has been my goal: to help abused children by donating books, food, clothes… anything they need. I love hanging out with kids and bringing them presents. I’m really hands on in that way with my foundation.

Due to the economy and everything that’s going on in our world, have you noticed that the academic intelligence of children is worse when it comes to helping children with literacy and self-esteem?

It’s very different… people aren’t giving a lot of money anymore because people can’t afford it. So I’m really there helping promote the awareness of abuse of children and just making sure they stay in school. Because we are their voice, and they’re helpless and vulnerable and we need to speak up for them because they can’t.

Tell me how you have grown personally from reaching out and helping… What have you learned?

I’ve really learned how lucky I am. I come from a really incredible family and I’m so fortunate of that. That’s why I feel like I need to help – because I’m so fortunate. Not everyone comes from a good family, but making someone’s life a little easier is what I can do. I’ve grown up in philanthropy and have been involved my whole life. It’s really rewarding. Just to touch one person’s life is worth it.

For someone our age who doesn’t have a lot of money to start a foundation, where is a good place for them to start?

Just being totally hands on, getting involved in school foundations. So many schools have foundations in which you can help out. Help the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America. You don’t have to give everything… give your love. Kids need love more than anything else. And if you don’t know where to start, you can start out helping in my foundation. I’m always looking for volunteers.

Were you brought up to show acts of kindness or was there a certain event that made you start your foundation and start volunteering as early as you did?

I was brought up to give back. But I really became passionate about it when my best friend died when she was sixteen years old from breast cancer. That really woke me up to really living my life full, and to have meaning and purpose. Going through that extreme with my girlfriend made me realize I really have to do something, and I had to help and be really involved in helping others because I understand how short life is.

Do you think that young women in Hollywood are doing a great job at setting a example for other young females, or do you feel they’re really taking their stardom for granted?

You know, I think that some of them are and some aren’t, and they have the opportunity to do so. Like Hayden Panettiere – she’s fighting for the dolphins. I think that’s so great that she’s a part of that and that she’s showing young girls that she’s fighting for a great cause and showing such passion. But I believe that other celebrities have the forum but don’t really take the advantage of it.

Will any of your upcoming projects reflect the work you’ve been able to do with young children?

I’m sure they will. I really want to write a book. I have a few projects that I’m actually in the process of starting. I’m working on them. I want to bring awareness to children in need in general. It’s a big huge part of my life – I’m very passionate about it and I really want to incorporate it into my career. It’s really important to me.

What can the fans look forward to seeing you in next?

I just finished a film. It’s a thriller called LURE. I’m really excited about it. I have a few appearances on The Hills. And I’m really into this philanthropic project that I’m doing right now, this project I’m working on which I can’t wait to tell you about. It’s in the works. So I can’t really say anything. I really want to put a lot of time into charity since I just graduated from college. I really want this year to be a great year for me and the children philanthropy wise.

Starring alongside Damon Whitaker and Danny Venegas, Raul Julia-Levy has played the leads of a positive role model in film.

In real life, Julia-Levy plays the role of a philanthropist, actor, producer and activist with a heart. He grew up in a prominent family in Mexico City and met his famous father for the first time in Hollywood when he was 17. Despite any life challenges he has faced, he has remained dedicated to his passions and his cause.

I had the opportunity of meeting of Raul and asking him a few questions on why philanthropy is so important to him.

What initially inspired you to get involved in charity and philanthropy?

I have always had a heart for others since I was 5 years old. My instincts as a human being began at that time and I had a heart for people and animals. I remember my grandfather asked me, “who is the most important person,” and I said HE is, of course, or my mother. He told me he would be back after I could think about it a while. When he returned I told him that “I” am the most important person, and he kissed me and said that is right.

Were you raised to think about others or was there an event in your life that caused you to direct your interests toward charity?

At 7 years my grandfather told me that I have too many shoes – don’t you know there are people that don’t have one pair? A maid worked in the house and her son had holes in his shoes – I gave him 3 pairs of my shoes.

What do you get out of helping others and being a part of such a cause?

It makes me feel important to others and to myself and that I accomplish something – contributing to something important.

Why would you recommend others to get involved?

The rewards of helping others should be spread around and giving something back to the world in a noble way – it is a unique experience for humanity.

What would you like to see change about the world?

Everything needs to change in the world – starting from the respect of wild life and mankind as well as the respect for the environment around the world.

What would you do to fix the issues?

In order to make significant changes we all need to start from our own house and teach others to do the same.

You are involved with a lot of charities. What are the ones you are most passionate about and why?

I support FlauntMyPet, The Humane Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hollywood Children’s Hospital, and the Senior Citizen Foundation because they are all dedicated to supporting mankind as well as animals and survival into the future. I also support the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Michael J. Fox Foundation, & The Lolita Campaign.

Why do you feel these are worthy causes or organizations?

Life is essential for the growth of our planet and I believe these causes support that.

I have heard of the other charities, but I am not familiar with Flaunt My Pet. Could you tell me more?

When my first dog, Randy, died when both of us were 13 years old, it was a very emotional time for me. I felt like I lost a part of my body. Until this day his presence is still very strong to me. As an adult, my dog O’Toole died in 2006 – I was devastated. After spending $3000 we could not save him because he had plastic attached to his intestine. This is how FlauntMyPet.com was born. The death of our dog O’Toole and the astronomical number of dogs killed in this country each year-4 million dogs a year.

Flauntmypet.com is a major social site that will launch in 2009 showcasing a long list of Hollywood Celebrities and their pets. It is currently in the process of becoming a 501c3 nonprofit status. You and your celebrity friends have also been a great support to the Lolita Campaign. Can you tell our readers about your purpose in the campaign?

We are all dedicated to relocating this wonderful whale back into her natural habitat. It is extremely important that we succeed in this cause because that will set the standard and prevent aquariums and facilities, that don’t meet Federal regulations, from displaying such animals in captivity under poor conditions. We believe that we will succeed 100% in the relocation of the whale.

What other projects are you working on?

Working with AnswersForElders.com, a social site for baby boomers who are taking care of their elderly parents. I am currently involved with an epic movie called Birdwoman of the Snake, a Native American story about Sacagawea, staring Ewan McGregor

If you had the opportunity to use your celebrity status to make changes for the better of the world, what would you do?

Raise awareness, educate people, provide unique information, invite people to get involved and take part of the change.

Who are some of your celebrity friends that really make a difference in the world today?

Johnny Depp, who is incredibly devoted to children and animals; Harrison Ford, Forest Whitaker, Jermaine Jackson, Halima Jackson, Jean Claude Van Dam, 50 Cent, Bob Barker, Elton John, Placido Domingo, Shari Watson aka: Truth Hurts, American Idol: Chikezie, Hayden Panettiere, Lindsay Lohan, Bokeem Woodbine, Wesley Snipes, Richard Grieco and many other A-list celebrities from Mexico City.

How do you think we can get more celebrities to get involved in positive change?

By being a good example and promoting good examples and good work. Showing celebrities that their voices are powerful enough to make things happen.

How do you think we can inspire more people to become involved in giving back?

Utilizing our most powerful tool – our voices through a clear message that is direct and inspirational.

How important is it for celebrities like yourself and your friends to use their voice?

It is extremely important for them to give back in any way, shape or form – part of our mission. We all have a purpose to give back.

Imagine the impact we would see if everyone in Hollywood would use his or her voice to make a positive impact in the world. Who knows, maybe philanthropy would become the industry standard and we could all flaunt our pet with a purpose.

Heroes Come To The Rescue For Autism

Fans of NBC’s Heroes will be excited to learn about an event to take place in April featuring the cast from the hit show, live music from Band From TV, and a silent auction – all to benefit children with autism.

Heroes For Autism will take place on April 19 at the Avalon Hollywood, and will kick off with a VIP cocktail reception and silent auction featuring art work designed and created by the cast and crew of Heroes. Guests will then enjoy a concert performance by the ‘Band From TV’ – featuring Greg Grunberg, Adrian Pasdar, James Denton, Jesse Spencer, and Bob Guiney – and a special performance by the show’s music composers Wendy & Lisa. Wendy & Lisa will perform their music from the series, as well as music from their newly-released CD, ‘White Flags of Winter Chimneys.’

General admission to the event is $70, although $200 will buy you a VIP ticket that includes entry to the cocktail reception and early bids on auction items. All proceeds from the evening will go to Autism Speaks, an organization that funds global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism. Autism Speaks also raises public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society, and brings hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.

There will be over 80 pieces of art from 22 artists up for auction – including works from Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia – featuring a range of mediums, including photography, painting, drawing, and animation. The auction will continue until 8:30 p.m. and at 9:30 p.m. the winners will be announced.

Stars Raise Cash In Celebrity Charity Smackdown

South by Southwest (SXSW, Inc.) is a private company based in Austin, Texas, dedicated to building and delivering conference and festival events for entertainment and related media industry professionals. Since 1987, SXSW has produced the internationally recognized Music and Media Conference & Festival and this year they’ve added a new twist.

SXSW, in conjunction with PayPay, have kicked off the first ever social-media smackdown and charity fundraiser at Mashable and Blurb’s SXSW Bash at Six Lounge in Austin.

Here’s how it works: PayPal has challenged nine celebrity teams to raise the most money for their chosen charities via social media sites and blogs. Fans can help by copying their favorite celebrity’s PayPal fundraising widget to their MySpace pages, Facebook page, or personal Web sites to encourage friends to donate.

The ‘Smackdown’ runs March 16-26, when PayPal will announce the winner and make an additional donation to the winning celebrity’s charity of choice.

Participating celebrities include Alec Baldwin, who is raising money for the Actors Fund of America.

The first empowerment youth conference event of its kind developed and targeted to reach and teach girls ages 10-13 will take place on March 28, and plenty of celebrities will turn out to take part.

Co-founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Manuela Testolini (formerly married to Prince), Girl Prep aims to help raise self-esteem, leadership skills, and confidence amongst young inner city girls, and is a response to increased community concern for early intervention in the lives of disadvantaged teen girls.

Hosted by Maiara Walsh and Brando Eaton, guests will include Jansen Panettiere, Scott Bakula, Austin Butler, Jason Dolley, Madison Pettis (Corey in the House), Vitamin C, and many more.

The evening will benefit In A Perfect World, a foundation founded by Manuela Testolini to help children around the US become compassionate, socially-conscious, and responsible leaders. In A Perfect World partners with schools and community-based organizations that implement innovative strategies and programs to develop this type of leadership in children.

“Through close collaboration, In a Perfect World will seek to enlarge what community-based organizations and public schools are able to do,” said Testolini. “We believe this to be important because so many schools and organizations are creating such significant, meaningful, and positive change in their communities, yet their innovative models and powerful messages do not receive the level of support needed to sustain and expand this change. Back in October last year, Look To The Stars reported on an online petition launched by Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere and The Whaleman Foundation to help her stop the slaughter of whales and dolphins around the world. The petition has almost reached its goal of 1 million signitures, and Panettiere has blogged about a new widget you can use to help.

“A few months ago I announced our goal of getting 1,000,000 signatures for our petition to stop all commercial and lethal scientific research whaling in time for the June 2009 meeting of the International Whaling Commission,” the actress wrote on her MySpace page yesterday. "So far, we’ve done great and gotten over 90,000 signatures but with just a couple of months left, we really need to take this to the next level to reach our goal.

“That’s why I’ve worked closely with SocialVibe to design a really cool widget that allows anyone, anywhere, to just grab this widget and put it on their MySpace or Blog. It makes it so simple for your friends and family to sign on to our petition right where they see it.

“I can’t express in words how much this means to me… Iceland recently announced it was upping its quota from 40 whales a year to 250 whales a year including 150 endangered Fin Whales and 100 Minke Whales. Now, it’s more important than ever that we reach our 1 million signature goal, and let the world know that this needless slaughter has to stop.

Wyclef Jean headlined the Inaugural Green Ball on Saturday, January 17, to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama.

The event celebrated the grass root efforts made by individuals and organizations across the US and the world whose actions improve and protect the environment.

Held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington DC, the event attracted stars such as Hayden Panettiere, with every part of the evening’s proceedings designed to reduce the impact on the environment.

“With millions of visitors headed to Washington for President-elect Obama’s swearing in ceremony and accompanying celebrations, the impact on our environment will be substantial,” said event organizer Jenna Mack. “Our goal is to create an unforgettable evening while treading lightly on the Earth.”

Heroes star and Eco-warrior princess Hayden Panettiere was up early in Saturday morning to go Christmas shopping with a group of children from the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

The 20-year-old star accompanied five girls on a shopping spree at Candie’s in San Gabriel. She gave the girls fashion tips – “Not many of them listened to me!” – and helped them choose clothes and accessories using gifts of $500.

The girls that were chosen to accompany Panettiere suffer from a range of health problems, including aneurisms, strokes, paralysis of the nerves and spine and sickle cell anemia.

The young actress is well known for her charity and environmental work. In October, 2007, Panettiere joined Australian actress Isabel Lucas and other activists in a peaceful protest in Japan, to raise awareness of the 25,000 dolphins slaughtered by the nation every year. The group narrowly avoided arrest over the incident, but succeeded in diverting international media to the abhorrent and barbaric practices used to butcher the animals. This week marks the one year anniversary of Panettiere’s trip to Taiji, Japan, to protest the dolphin slaughtering which resulted in her arrest. Now she has launched an exclusive petition with The Whaleman Foundation on SocialVibe.com – with the hope of collecting 1 million signatures.

Actress Hayden Panettiere led hundreds of people in a rally to form a giant human pilot whale beside the message “VOTE” in front of the U.S. Capitol building yesterday, October 26.

The event commemorated the one-year anniversary of the actress’ protest in Taiji, Japan, where she joined Australian actress Isabel Lucas and other activists in a peaceful protest to raise awareness of the 25,000 dolphins slaughtered by the nation every year. The group narrowly avoided arrest over the incident, but succeeded in diverting international media to the abhorrent and barbaric practices used to butcher the animals.

“I turned 18 last year and I’m going to make my first vote count,” she said. “I am looking forward to my visit to Washington to talk to those who will be voting in the upcoming election, to stress the importance of knowing where the candidates stand on the issues that are most important to them, and to be sure that come November 4th, they will actually go out and vote to ensure that their voices are heard.”

Although the US has always been at the forefront of anti-whaling campaigns, its leadership on whale issues has significantly declined in recent years. The American appointed to be chairman of the International Whaling Commission – William Hogarth – has recently announced he is negotiating a deal that could allow for an IWC-sanctioned resumption of commercial whaling.

“The fact the U.S. is leading this process is outrageous!” said Jeff Pantukhoff, president and founder of The Whaleman Foundation and executive director of the Save The Whales Again campaign. “Recent polls show that over 75 percent of registered voters oppose whaling, and over two-thirds want our government to do something about it; yet to this point, the Bush administration has done little to stop the increasing slaughter and is now actively leading efforts that could result in a legalized return to commercial whaling.”

Yesterday’s event followed Panettiere’s appearance at American University on Saturday evening to talk with students at an event sponsored by the university’s Women and Politics Institute.

Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Charlize Theron were some of the stars who appeared at the fifth annual Fashion Rocks concert celebrating the relationship between music and fashion last Friday.

Proceeds from the show – which was televised on CBS on Tuesday night – went to Stand Up To Cancer, which held its own star-studded telethon on the same evening. The Fashion Rocks show included a performance of more than a dozen divas — including Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Natasha Bedingfield, Fergie, Rihanna and Cyrus — who sung their new charity song Just Stand Up, which was beamed live to the Stand Up To Cancer television extravaganza.

“This is the first time we’re all together singing the song,” said Bedingfield. “It was really special. It was really like a sisterhood, like a bond… We’re all used to being the stars — the only star in the room — and it was really nice I think that everyone could just come together and really support each other.”

Also present at Fashion Rocks were Hilary Swank and Hayden Panettiere, with performances from Kid Rock, Keith Urban, Duffy, the Black Eyed Peas, and the Pussycat Dolls. But it was the sizzling duet between Timberlake and Beyonce on “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing” that stole the show.

And just to prove that there really is nothing like the real thing, Timberlake has also confirmed he will once again host the Shriners Hospitals for Children Golf Open in October.

Following on from the success of last year’s event, the Open will take place October 13-19 at the TPC Summerlin course in Las Vegas.

The annual event has taken place every year since 1983 and has raised more than $10 million for Las Vegas area charities. Previous champions include Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Paul Azinger, Jim Furyk, Curtis Strange and Fuzzy Zoeller.

Fans are already bidding over $20,000 for the opportunity to join the band on the road and hang out with Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend on their US tour. Passionate about stopping the slaughter of whales, dolphins, and seals, Hayden Panettiere is taking her cause out of her closet and into the American presidential race.

Panettiere is not only auctioning some of her outfits and a whale watching tour for six “through the Channel Islands to witness some of the most spectacular whale feeding grounds and have the chance to see the ever-elusive Blue Whale” to benefit the Whaleman Foundation’s Save The Whales Again, she has also hit the campaign trail.

Hayden has given speeches at American universities and met with political figures to get ‘abolishing the whale hunts’ back onto the political agenda. Following meetings with American congressmen, she then approached representatives of Iceland, Japan, and Norway to challenge their archaic practices.

“Whales face increasing threats from climate change, ship strikes, entanglement in nets, and chemical and noise pollution, yet Japan, Norway and Iceland continue to kill them in increasing numbers,” Panettiere said at a press conference. “Polls show that 59% of Americans would be more willing to vote for a candidate who takes a strong stand on whaling. I want our voice to be heard.”

Although many people think whales were saved back in the ‘70s with the moratorium on commercial whaling, Whaleman Foundation’s president Jeff Pantukhoff says, “nothing could be further from the truth.” Since the moratorium went into effect, over 25,000 whales have been killed.

Pantukhoff – who is also the Director of Save the Whales Again! Campaign – said, “Over two thirds of registered voters want our government to do something about it, yet to this point, little has been done to stop the increasing slaughter. We need the United States to reflect the will of its people and lead the way in taking all necessary actions against Japan, Norway, and Iceland until the killing stops.”

Some of Tinseltown’s brightest female stars turned out for an early Mothers Day charity fundraiser event in Los Angeles today, April 29, to salute mothers staying at Ronald McDonald House.

Cindy Crawford, Dayanara Torres, June Ambrose, and Tamia hosted the “spa and wellbeing” event, and treated mothers with sick children to manicures and neck and shoulder massages, make-up tips, and consultations provided by JAFRA Cosmetics International Inc., as well as gift bags filled with beauty items.

“It will be very special to watch these incredible mothers take a break, relax, and enjoy the day,” said Crawford. “We know that the presence of families helps in the healing process for children. These moms give so much love and support to their children during such a difficult time, and in honor of Mother’s Day, this is a nice way to show our appreciation for all the sacrifices they make for their families each and every day.”

The stars took part in the event as Celebrity Friends of Ronald McDonald House (RMHC), part of the charity’s existing Friends of RMHC volunteer program which includes a network of 30,000 volunteers that allows RMHC to serve millions of children each year. Other celebrities involved in the program include Hayden Panettiere, Holly Robinson-Peete, and Wayne Brady. The celebrity program was launched in 2007, during McDonald’s annual World Children’s Day fundraiser for RMHC, and is designed to heighten awareness for the charity and inspire people to take action by actively donating their time, resources, or funds.

Lolita is a 42-year-old living in Miami. Originally from Puget Sound near Washington, Lolita was forcibly taken from her home in 1970 – when she was only six years old – and forced to perform for people who would pay money to watch her. Thirty-seven years later, Lolita is still living in cramped conditions.

Lolita is 22 feet long and weighs 7,500 pounds. She loves being wet, but lives in a tank only 80 feet wide and 20 feet deep at the Miami Seaquarium… a far cry from the wide-open spaces of her home.

Lolita is an Orca – also known as a killer whale – and the campaign to send her home has just hit an all time high, with a long list of celebrity supporters adding their names to a proposal to retire the aging mammal to her home.

The Orca Network is behind the campaign, with organization co-founder and president Howard Garrett recently announcing the support of actors Johnny Depp and Harrison Ford and rap stars 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg.

“Momentum is building,” said Garrett. “A publicity campaign is in the works being directed by people in Hollywood.”

The Orca Network is also currently organizing a benefit concert to raise money for the campaign, perhaps featuring other celebrity supporters such as Janet Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, and Placido Domingo.

“Lolita is a very special orca,” said Garrett. “Her survival is beyond all expectations. Of the 45 of Lolita’s extended family, the Southern Resident orcas, captured and delivered to parks around the world between 1965 and 1975, all the others were dead by 1987. She is known to be courageous, yet so very gentle. She has endured 37 years of confinement while performing two shows per day, without the company of any other orca since 1980. She deserves a chance to retire to her home waters and visit with her family once again.”

Proceeds from the sale of the wind-up, solar powered radios will go directly to the Freeplay Foundation, an organization set up to donate the radio sets to villages in Africa.
