Kirk Douglas will host his annual Thanksgiving meal for the homeless at the Los Angeles Mission today, and some big stars are expected to give him a hand.

Among those expected to help out are Zoe Saldana, Blair Underwood, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mayor Villaraigosa, Councilman Dennis Zine, Police Chief Charlie Beck and many others.

The Mission is celebrating its 75th year of service to the community, with special food preparation and demonstrations on the street with Kogi BBQ Chef Roy Choi – best known for the Kogi BBQ Truck (and voted “Best New Chef” by Food & Wine in 2010). Roy has worked to bring a culinary experience to Skid Row unlike any other.

The event took place on Sunday, April 11th in Hollywood at Boulevard3. Patricia Heaton hosted the fundraiser, and Ray Romano headlined an ensemble of comedians including stand-up comics Jeff Allen and Mike Polk. For the past five years Kirk Douglas and his wife have hosted the street dinner at the Los Angeles Mission. Volunteers from TV, radio and movies, political leaders and others will bring Thanksgiving a day early to thousands of homeless men, women and children. The day will feature the traditional Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, served hot and fresh in a friendly family atmosphere. Los Angeles Christian Health Centers will provide foot care and exams at the event.

Celebrities Give Their Soles To Foster Care Centre

The first “Foster Soles” online charity auction took place last month to support Hillsides, a Los Angeles foster care and treatment centre.

Foster Soles collected the shoes of dozens of big names, such as Denzel Washington, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicolas Cage, who autographed their footwear before putting them up on the block.

Proceeds of the auction will be used by Hillsides for their programs and in public awareness. Once an orphanage, it is now a private, non-profit centre providing abused children with a safe refuge and advocating for their rights. Hillsides’ website says, “Although [the children] come from all over Southern California and encompass every ethnic and socioeconomic group, they share a common experience – the emotional scars that result from child abuse. With counselling and mental health treatment, children at Hillsides learn that they are not alone, that they are safe and cared for. Six programs constitute the framework for Hillsides treatment services – Residential Treatment, the Education Center, the Family Center and Advocacy.”

APLA is rolling out the red carpet for “The Envelope Please,” an Oscar viewing party for celebrities, local influencers and VIPs from the entertainment and Los Angeles community. The exclusive black-tie affair, which has raised more than $1.2 million for APLA through its history, will be held at The Abbey in West Hollywood on Sunday, February 22. For over 50 years, the Los Angeles Mission has served the people of Hope Central (known as Skid Row), providing emergency services such as shelter, food, clothing, as well as professional medical and dental services. The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this weekend to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 25, and will honor Denzel Washington for his charity work.

This year celebrates 30 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 18th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.
