Sting's 60th Raises Millions For Charity

A host of stars – including Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Mary J. Blige – helped celebrate Sting’s 60th birthday on Saturday night, and raised $3.7 million for charity in the process.

The stars took part in a massive charity concert at New York’s Beacon Theater in front of an audience that included Trudie Styler, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Jake Gyllenhaal and Melanie Griffith, as well as 32 members of Britain’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who have all completed missions in Afghanistan.

Also appearing on stage at the event were Robert Downey Jr, will.i.am, Chris Botti, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Joe Sumner and Branford Marsalis.

Stars To Dream For Kids At Celebrity Charity Gala

1,500 supporters, including celebrities, prominent philanthropists, business leaders and elected officials will gather at the L.A. Live Events Deck for “Dream for Kids: The Grand Opening Gala” on Saturday, May 7.

The exclusive black-tie event celebrates the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ 110th anniversary and the completion of its new $636 million hospital building, which opens July 10. Three-time GRAMMY Award winning jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall will provide the night’s headline entertainment and two-time Emmy award-winner Eric Stonestreet will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Grammy-winner Patti Austin will perform the grand finale with the “Dream for Kids” Ensemble.

Heidi Klum To Walk With Celebrity Friends For Charity

American singer-songwriter Crystal Bowersox will join with supermodel Heidi Klum, actress and author Jamie Lee Curtis, “Dancing with the Stars” champion Jennifer Grey and actress Melanie Griffith in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Saturday, April 30 at the hospital’s Walk for Kids, Street Party and Turn on the Lights celebration.

The special events will commemorate the opening of the 317-bed new hospital building at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which will open to patients on July 10. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles first opened its doors in 1901 and is celebrating its 110th anniversary of serving the community.

“I’m so happy to be part of the celebration because Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a very special place,” said Bowersox, who released her new solo album “Farmer’s Daughter” in December. “I’m glad to bring my music to the Street Party celebration for families to enjoy so we can all have a good time.”

The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this month to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 23, and will honor Maria Shriver and Quincy Jones for their charity work.

This year celebrates 31 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 19th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.

Eva Longoria and Antonio Banderas hosted a very special charity gala in Spain on August 7.

The Starlite Gala raised money for three charities and their goals: Eva’s Heroes (founded by Eva Longoria), to fund 50 programs for special needs children; Fundación Lágrimas y Favores (founded by Antonio Banderas), to award 30 scholarships for students from Malaga to study abroad; and Niños en Alegria (Children in Hapiness), to build a primary school in Mexico.

Deepak Chopra was presented with a special Humanitarian Award at the event, and a number of items and experiences went under the hammer – including a day on the set of Desperate Housewives and CSI: Miami.

Animal activists were out in force at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, March 20, for The Humane Society of the United States’ 24th annual Genesis Awards.

Stars such as Kristen Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Emily Deschanel, Jon Lovitz, Ginnifer Goodwin, Teri Hatcher, Tricia Helfer, Carrie Ann Inaba, Maria Menounos and many more were on hand to present awards to a variety of celebrities, shows, and activists who have spent the last year making the world a better place for animals. Veteran actress Tippi Hedren received a special lifetime achievement award from her daughter, Melanie Griffith, for her work raising awareness of the exotic pet trade.

The big winners of the night were the films Up, Hotel For Dogs and The Cove. Also picking up awards were an episode of Family Guy that featured animal exploitation issues, and an episode of Bones.

Animal welfare warriors shouldn’t forget The Humane Society’s 24th annual Genesis Awards this Saturday, March 20.

This year will see Melanie Griffith present a lifetime achievement award to her mother, 80-year-old Tippi Hedren, for dedicating the last 40 years to the protection of animals and raising awareness of the exotic pet trade.

“Tippi is an extraordinary woman – both a hands-on caregiver to 63 discarded big cats at the Shambala Preserve, as well as a tireless activist who continues to work in support of federal legislation that would ban the breeding of and the trade in exotic animals in the U.S.,” said Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Hollywood office of The Humane Society of the United States and executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards.

The giving just keeps on going this holiday season, with a whole bunch of celebrities donating items to charity auctions, and others taking the time to attend events and fork out massive amounts of money for good causes.

Such was the case on December 11, when the husband and wife team of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith paid $50,000 for a pair of artworks by Joan Miro and Salvador Dali at an auction in Chile.

“They bought the two works for a price much higher than their commercial value, because the proceeds of the auction went to UNICEF,” said Denise Ratinoff, head of the auction house that ran the event. “It was virtually a donation to UNICEF, and it helped a lot. Their presence in the auction made many other people also pay steeply for what they purchased.”
