OK Go Sells Guitars In Fender Charity Auction

The Squier by Fender guitars used in OK Go’s ‘Do What You Want’ music video are being sold off in support of the Fender Music Foundation.

According the official Fender blog, Front Row, included on the auction block are a unique Stratocaster, Telecaster and P Bass, which were specifically designed for the video which was shot in a single room where every surface (and every prop, instrument, and even the performers that enter it) was covered in the same damask wallpaper pattern.

A host of other rare and valuable pieces of musical memorabilia is also being sold off to support the efforts of the charity, including a signed Zakk Wylde guitar, a new signature model Fender Stratocaster autographed by Kenny Wayne Shepherd and a psychedelic Flying V whose design was inspired by the music of Jimi Hendrix.

OK Go's White Knuckles For Animal Charity

OK Go are well-known for their amazing music videos, and their latest – White Knuckles – is no exception. And what makes it really special is that it raises awareness of animal shelters.

Most of the dogs in the White Knuckles video are rescues. They’re the lucky ones – they have loving families. Unfortunately, there are countless animals out there who do not.

“We knew that potentially millions of people were going to see this in a very short period of time, and that a universal human love of animals was sort of going to waste,” says band member Damien Kulash. "We wanted an organization that anyone, anywhere watching it could understand was working in their community. It’s like “please help the dogs of the world,” and so we called up the ASPCA."

Steve Earle Featured On Charity Album For New Orleans

Steve Earle and his wife, Allison Moorer, are just two of the stars who have donated songs to a new benefit album raising funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Joining the couple – who welcomed a new baby into their lives earlier this year – on Dear New Orleans are a number of bands and artists, including OK Go, Tom Morello and My Morning Jacket. The album is being produced by Air Traffic Control, an organization that has been co-hosting activism retreats in New Orleans for the last four years.

Proceeds from the Dear New Orleans album will go to a number of organizations working to support and sustain the region’s unique musical and cultural traditions, and to protect and restore vital environmental and community resources for future generations. These include Sweet Home New Orleans and the Gulf Restoration Network.

Musicians Band Together To Make Signs

Michael Stipe, Jarvis Cocker, Death Cab for Cutie and OK Go are some of the musicians who have banded together for a new charity auction sponsored by Under The Radar Magazine.

The bands have created signs and banners using black paint on white card to raise money for War Child. Most of the signs display the musicians’ political commentary and slogans – such as OK Go’s They Bank on Your Apathy, Chuck D’s Fight the Power ‘Of Course’, and Michael Stipe’s Things I Hate: Gutless Puff Adder Journalists. However, others display more a individual style – such as Supergrass’ Dolphins Are Not Just Sex Objects and Peter Morén’s Down With Whistling.

The auction runs until October 7, and can be accessed through eBay.

Musicians Start The Year With Generosity

2008 has only just begun, but already celebrities are straining at the leash to spread generosity among those who need it. And a host of musicians have kicked off the year with donations and events to raise money and awareness for a number of good causes.

Pop group OK Go are set to release a charity EP on iTunes on February 5, with all proceeds going to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The 5-song release, “You’re Not Alone”, will coincide with Mardi Gras 2008, and will benefit New Orleans-based musicians displaced by the 2005 disaster.

“New Orleans is one of the last places in America where music is truly a fundamental part of everyday life,” said OK Go singer Damian Kulash, whose hits include “A Million Ways” and “Here It Goes Again”. “People get together on the weekends and parade through the streets just playing songs; 12-year-old-kids learn funk on the tuba; everyone dances. Life elsewhere in the world simply isn’t as celebratory. If we allow the culture of New Orleans to die by leaving its musicians marooned around the country, America will have lost one of its great treasures.”
