Big Names To Celebrate Muhammad Ali's 70th Birthday At Charity Gala

The cast of entertainers and sports icons slated to appear at Keep Memory Alive’s 16th annual Power of Love Gala on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Las Vegas keeps getting bigger every day, though only a limited number of tickets remain for the celebrity-filled fundraiser.

Fans wishing to see what’s happening inside this one-of-a-kind 70th birthday celebration for Muhammad Ali — which will raise funds in support of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Muhammad Ali Center — will also be able to tune in to “Ali 70th From Las Vegas” on ABC on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. ET and 2 p.m. PT. It will re-air on ESPN2 later that same night at 10 p.m. ET.

The lineup for the night includes performances and heartfelt tributes from some of the world’s hottest entertainers and sports icons. The list of performers and celebrity supporters slated to appear at the celebration includes Stevie Wonder, Samuel L. Jackson, David Beckham, Larry King, Ken Jeong, Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Common, Lenny Kravitz, Sean Combs, Anthony Hopkins, John Legend, Chris Cornell, Cee Lo Green, Joe Perry, Slash, Terrence Howard, David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, Andre Agassi, Stefanie Graf, Jim Brown, Randy Couture, Brad Garrett, Kelly Rowland, Dave Koz, Robin Leach, James Gandolfini, Steve Schirripa, Chazz Palminteri and Sammy Hagar. In celebration of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, the Grammy Charity Online Auctions are open now through Feb. 23.

Gibson GuitarTown on The Sunset Strip, administered by the Gibson Foundation, is completing its yearlong “tour” of the boulevard and has announced the art guitars will be auctioned for charity on December 3, 2011, at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery (9665 Wilshire Blvd.) beginning at 2 p.m.

The auction will also be accessible online at www.julienslive.com. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Los Angeles Youth Network, which provides outreach, food, emergency shelter, transitional living and educational enrichment programs for homeless adolescents; West Hollywood Arts & Cultural Commission to further support public art and artists on The Sunset Strip; and the West Hollywood Library.

The Shark Free Marina Initiative released statistics showing that recreational fishing of sharks in the U.S. has contributed to the devastating decline in shark populations worldwide. Up to 73 million sharks are killed world-wide each year in commercial fisheries, mostly for their fins. This is a staggering number that is compounded by the hundreds of thousands of sharks killed for sport in the U.S. annually. This recreational killing of sharks adds not only to the alarming death toll but also undermines efforts to gain better protections for sharks and sends an unspoken message that the only good shark is a dead one.

Ke$ha and Iggy Pop have joined PETA’s campaign to stop the barbaric slaughter of seals in Canada.

According to PETA, “Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to descend on the ice to club hundreds of thousands of seals to death and sell the animals’ pelts on the international fur market. Sealers routinely hook these fuzzy creatures in the eyes, cheeks, or mouth to avoid damaging their fur and then drag the animals across the ice. The seal-hunters crush baby seals’ skulls in with their clubs before they skin them.”

Linkin Park And Slash Join Celebrity Charity Album For Japan

Artists such as Linkin Park, Enrique Iglesias, Slash, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Counting Crows have contributed new songs to the nonprofit group Music for Relief to support Save the Children’s emergency response efforts in Japan.

The exclusive and growing catalog of songs can be downloaded at www.downloadtodonate.org for a donation of $10 or more. All contributions will go to Save the Children for the duration of the campaign, which runs through May 11.

Slash will perform at a special charity gig in Hollywood on December 11.

The Rock Nation Monster Showcase at The Highlands, 6801 Hollywood Blvd, will benefit Shred Kids Cancer, a charity established by 10-year-old Teegan Stedman after a friend was diagnosed with cancer.

“Shred Kids’ Cancer is a charity that lets kids try and do something for these other kids who are suffering,” says Teegan. “Its a way to make the kids who have cancer know that we are here for them and show them we care and give them strength.”

Beginning in October, the Shark-Free Marina Initiative will embark on it’s largest membership campaign throughout the United States and the Bahamas in order to save sharks.

Sharks are disappearing from our oceans at an alarming rate. Therefore, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, The Humane Society of the United States, and various other organizations have teamed up with the Shark-Free Marina Initiative (SFMI) for a singular, historic purpose: to reduce worldwide shark mortality. SFMI certifies sport fishing and resort marinas as ‘Shark-Free’ thereby prohibiting any shark from being landed at their dock.

Slash Teams With Dora The Explorer For Charity

Guitar legend Slash is teaming up with children’s cartoon character Dora the Explorer in this year’s most unlikely yet utterly awesome charity collaboration.

The guitarist is the first of a list of celebrities to be announced in a new initiative between Nickelodeon and the Children’s Defense Fund which will see stars design children’s backpacks for auction. Also rumored to be involved are Shakira and Salma Hayek.

According to the Fund, its mission “is to Leave No Child Behind and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.”

Will.i.am And Slash Cover The Who For Earthquake Relief

The Black Eyed Peas are gearing up for the Feb. 14 launch of a world tour that will stretch into the spring of 2011, but among the planning, will.i.am and former Guns N Roses member Slash made time to record a fresh remix of The Who’s “My Generation” to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief.  

Will.i.am told Billboard.com that he was commissioned to remix the iconic 1965 rock anthem, which will air during the Super Bowl XLIV broadcast on Feb. 7 — where The Who is performing at halftime — and then go on sale via iTunes.

“It’s The Who, their song, and then I altered the lyric to fit my generation now and then have Slash on it,” will.i.am says. “It was awesome. I loved that song way before this even came up, and talking to Pete Townshend on the phone is like, ‘What?! I’m talking to Pete Townshend on the phone?!’ That was awesome, being able to just hear their advice and everything. Those guys are just awesome.”  The “My Generation” remix will be part of a big month for will.i.am and company as the Peas head to the Grammy Awards, where they’re up for six trophies, including Album of the Year.

In partnership with the United Nations Foundation, Habitat For Humanity and the Dave Matthews Band’s Bama Works Fund Haitian relief effort, Music for Relief is working to provide immediate aid with food, water, and emergency medical supplies, and long-term sustainable housing solutions for the people affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th at 4:53pm.

To help, people can download a mixtape of nine original songs by Linkin Park, Slash, Alanis Morissette, Peter Gabriel, Hoobastank, The All-American Rejects, and Enrique Iglesias. There is no set price for the album. However, donate what you can and donate generously as this catastrophic natural disaster requires that the world step up to help.

Music for Relief is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing aid to victims of natural disasters and the prevention of such disasters. Since its inception in 2005, Music for Relief has raised over $3 million for victims of multiple disasters across four continents and planted over 810,000 trees to help reduce global warming. Music for Relief was found by the band Linkin Park.

Slash And Friends Rock Hard For Charity

It was an extremely loud night for charity in LA on Sunday, November 22, when Slash joined Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington for a charity concert to benefit the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN).

It was a star-studded event to make any Rock fan’s mouth water. Slash played an awesome rendition of Paradise City with former Guns and Roses bandmates Duff McKagan and Steve Adler. Also at the event were Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale, Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and Blink 182’s Travis Barker.

LAYN helps some of the 12,000 homeless youths that sleep on LA’s streets every night by “providing street outreach, food, emergency shelter and transitional living programs, with a professional, caring staff in a nurturing and safe environment”. To find out about the charity, visit their website.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page joined a host of rock gods in signing a pair of Monitor Audio loudspeakers to be auctioned for charity.

The pair of Gold GS20’s were also autographed by Iggy Pop, Slash, Anvil, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Brian May and Paul Rodgers from Queen among many others.

The major players of the rock music industry all gathered together at the Park Lane Hotel in London to celebrate the winners of the Marshall Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards 2009.
