Duff McKagan And Stone Temple Pilots Join MusiCares Event

Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Loaded, Velvet Revolver) and Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz are the latest performers announced for the ninth annual MusiCares Map Fund benefit concert, taking place May 30 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

They join previously announced performers Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) with surprise guests; Tony Alva and his band Chicken Noodle Project featuring Ray Barbee and Matt Rainwater; Early Morning Rebel featuring vocalist Nathan James, guitarist Dustin Bath and drummer Joshua Mervin; rock musician/songwriter Ida Maria with drummer Dave Krusen, bassist Jenni Tarma and guitarist Stefan Tornby; and GRAMMY-winning musician and songwriter Slash. Artist Mix Master Mike will DJ and comedian Andy Dick will make a special appearance.

Bennington, lead vocalist of two-time GRAMMY-winning band Linkin Park, will be presented with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award by Mike Shinoda, co-lead vocalist and producer of Linkin Park, for his dedication and support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, and for his commitment to the addiction recovery process. Alva, legendary skateboarder, surfer, musician, and original member of the skateboarding team Dogtown Z-Boys, will be presented with the MusiCares From the Heart Award by Anthony Kiedis, lead vocalist of multi-GRAMMY-winning band Red Hot Chili Peppers, for his unconditional friendship and dedication to the mission and goals of the organization.

Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington with special guests, Tony Alva and his band Chicken Noodle Project, Early Morning Rebel, Ida Maria Band, and Slash have been announced as performers for the ninth annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert at Club Nokia in Los Angeles on May 30.

Slash Helps Steve Irwin's Father Launch Charity

Guitar legend Slash is currently touring Australia, and recently helped Steve Irwin's father launch his own wildlife foundation.

Slash made an appearance at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane to help kick off the Bob Irwin Wildlife Conservation Foundation.

The pair first met at the Soundwave Music Festival in 2010: “He brought some animals down to Soundwave so we got to actually meet – I was really starstruck,” said Slash. “Ever since I can remember from childhood I’ve liked snakes and reptiles and animals in general. But snakes in particular.”

Slash Teams With Stars For Charity Song

Slash has recruited some of his celebrity friends – such as Maroon 5's Adam Levine – to help him release a special video and song to help raise awareness for the plight of homeless youth in Los Angeles.

Shot in downtown LA, the star-studded cast for “Gotten” features Slash as himself, as well as Amanda “AJ” Milchalka (“Hellcats,” Super 8), Kristin Bauer (“True Blood”), Clifton Collins Jr. (Traffic, Capote), Jacob Vargas (Next Friday, Traffic), Sevier Crespo (Fast Lane) and Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), among others.

“This video was created to make people take notice of the homeless teen epidemic which is rampant in L.A. as well as in the rest of the country,” explains Slash. “The story in this video is just one scenario amid millions of potential situations happening at any given time in Los Angeles alone. Everybody involved with the making of this video selflessly donated their time and talents to this cause. I thank them with all my heart.”

On Monday, March 12, Gibson GuitarTown II launched on The Sunset Strip in West Hollywood with the unveiling of the first nine 10-foot tall guitar sculptures. The selection includes works from renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Tristan Eaton, Free Humanity, Smog City and DeeKay, and celebrates top musicians, including Van Halen, Rage Against The Machine and Jane’s Addiction, among others.

The launch event featured a check presentation by legendary guitarist Slash – who is in the studio finishing his second solo album Apocalyptic Love due out May 22 – and his wife Perla Hudson to 2010-11 GuitarTown charity recipient, Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN). LAYN will receive $27,180 from the auction of the previous round of GuitarTown art guitars, which included guitars celebrating Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, The Runaways, Oingo Boingo and Cheech & Chong, among others. Slash and Perla have worked closely with LAYN – which provides outreach, food, emergency shelter, transitional living and educational enrichment programs for homeless adolescents – for several years. Other organizations to benefit from the auction proceeds include West Hollywood Arts & Cultural Affairs Commission to further support public art and artists on The Sunset Strip and the West Hollywood Library.

Gibson GuitarTown on The Sunset Strip, administered by the Gibson Foundation, is completing its yearlong “tour” of the boulevard and has announced the art guitars will be auctioned for charity on December 3, 2011, at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery (9665 Wilshire Blvd.) beginning at 2 p.m.

The Shark Free Marina Initiative released statistics showing that recreational fishing of sharks in the U.S. has contributed to the devastating decline in shark populations worldwide. Up to 73 million sharks are killed world-wide each year in commercial fisheries, mostly for their fins. This is a staggering number that is compounded by the hundreds of thousands of sharks killed for sport in the U.S. annually. This recreational killing of sharks adds not only to the alarming death toll but also undermines efforts to gain better protections for sharks and sends an unspoken message that the only good shark is a dead one.

According to PETA, “Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to descend on the ice to club hundreds of thousands of seals to death and sell the animals’ pelts on the international fur market. Sealers routinely hook these fuzzy creatures in the eyes, cheeks, or mouth to avoid damaging their fur and then drag the animals across the ice. The seal-hunters crush baby seals’ skulls in with their clubs before they skin them.”

Linkin Park Bassist Makes Charity Trip To Haiti With UN Foundation

Linkin Park And Slash Join Celebrity Charity Album For Japan

Artists such as Linkin Park, Enrique Iglesias, Slash, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Counting Crows have contributed new songs to the nonprofit group Music for Relief to support Save the Children's emergency response efforts in Japan.

Slash will perform at a special charity gig in Hollywood on December 11.

The Rock Nation Monster Showcase at The Highlands, 6801 Hollywood Blvd, will benefit Shred Kids Cancer, a charity established by 10-year-old Teegan Stedman after a friend was diagnosed with cancer.

“Shred Kids’ Cancer is a charity that lets kids try and do something for these other kids who are suffering,” says Teegan. “Its a way to make the kids who have cancer know that we are here for them and show them we care and give them strength.”

The Songs of Hope VI silent auction will feature rare, one-of-a-kind music experiences and autographed items, including the opportunity to bid on Slash's autographed top hat; a walk-on role in the new Jamie Foxx movie “Skank Robbers”, a pair of limited-edition THIEL “Sunburst” speakers numbered and signed by Les Paul, whose classic Sunburst guitar inspired them, original signed lyrics and Oscar-nominated scores and songs and a live auction for autographed sheet music and photo of Led Zeppelin's “Whole Lotta Love.”

The evening will honor Randy Newman and Carole Bayer Sager, with guests expected to attend including Tommy Lee, David Foster, Gavin DeGraw, Keri Hilson, Paul Williams, and many more.

Celebrity Endorsments Help Charity Initiative Save Sharks

Beginning in October, the Shark-Free Marina Initiative will embark on it’s largest membership campaign throughout the United States and the Bahamas in order to save sharks.

Sharks are disappearing from our oceans at an alarming rate. Therefore, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, The Humane Society of the United States, and various other organizations have teamed up with the Shark-Free Marina Initiative (SFMI) for a singular, historic purpose: to reduce worldwide shark mortality. SFMI certifies sport fishing and resort marinas as ‘Shark-Free’ thereby prohibiting any shark from being landed at their dock.

“SFMI works directly with the recreational and commercial fishing community to send a clear message,” says Luke Tipple, Managing Director and SFMI founder. “As shark populations are decimated on a global scale we as a species are obligated to pay attention and reduce our wasteful destruction of these incredibly important animals.”
