Bob Barker Stands Up Against Ag-Gag Bills Across The US

TV icon and lifelong Republican Bob Barker, inspired by his successful efforts to stop Wyoming’s “ag-gag” bill, which would have hindered undercover investigations on factory farms by banning filming and forcing witnesses of abuse to report it within 48 hours of the first incident, is turning his attention to five states where other GOP-sponsored “ag-gag” bills are pending: Arkansas, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania.

In letters sent last week to legislators on behalf of PETA, Barker explains that evidence of repeated, routine abuse is crucial in order for law-enforcement officials to make a strong case against an animal abuser.

“I am a lifelong Republican who feels that authorities should have access to everything that they need to enforce the law,” writes Barker. “Americans today want better treatment of animals killed for food, not for their legislators to hide illegal cruelty on farms behind locked doors. … I hope to hear that you’ll stand up for protecting our right to document and expose cruelty to animals.”

Bob Barker Makes A Stand Against Opossum Drop

TV icon and lifelong Republican Bob Barker recently sent a letter to members of the North Carolina Standing Committee on Rules and Operation of the Senate urging them to reject Senate Bill 60, otherwise known by the offensive title “The Opossum Right-to-Work Act.”

The Republican-led effort is a clear attempt to circumvent a judge’s recent ruling that trapping a wild opossum using dogs, warehousing the frightened animal for days or weeks, and then lowering the opossum in a box during a loud ruckus—including gunfire and fireworks—at the annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Brasstown violated the state’s wildlife captivity statue. The bill, which also proposes to strip certain legal protections for other wildlife, is sponsored by North Carolina state Rep. Roger West, who also sponsors the annual Possum Drop.

“As a lifelong Republican and one who deeply values our country’s natural treasures, I’m writing to express profound concern over Senate Bill 60, also known by the offensive title ‘The Opossum Right-to-Work Act’,” wrote Bob Barker. "While I am sure that this bill was introduced as a laugh, a moment’s reflection will show that it makes a mockery of the legislative process and epitomizes big-government interference by seeking to significantly amend a well-established state law and create a legal loophole to satisfy the petty interests of one man made unhappy by a judge’s rightful ruling. The proposed amendment to the state’s captivity-licensing statute, which, in its original form, is meant to protect native wild animals, is sponsored by Rep. Roger West, who also sponsors the annual New Year’s Eve “Opossum Drop” at Clay Logan’s gas station in Brasstown. For this cruel event, a wild opossum is trapped using dogs, held in unnatural surroundings for days or weeks, then placed in a Plexiglas box on New Year’s Eve, hoisted above a stage, and subjected to a terrifying barrage of loud music, fireworks, and cannon and musket fire. Since the original captivity statute allows licenses to be issued for activities only in “the interests of humane treatment of wild animals,” such as wildlife rehabilitation, West’s attempt to carve out a loophole for this event is absurd, since no rational person could conclude that it is even remotely humane.

TV icon Bob Barker has sent a letter on PETA's behalf to Wyoming state senators. In the letter, Barker urges the lawmakers to block “ag-gag” House Bill (H.B.) 126, which would ban undercover cameras on factory farms—and as Barker, who grew up in the neighboring state of South Dakota, explains, video footage from undercover investigations has helped law-enforcement officials across the country prosecute cases of animal abuse.

Barker, a lifelong Republican, is passionate about ensuring that law-enforcement officials have all the resources that they need to enforce the law.

Bob Barker Donates $250,000 To Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation

Bob Barker, best known for hosting The Price is Right for 35 years, has donated $250,000 to Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation!

From the organization’s Facebook page: "The donation is funded through Barker’s Los Angeles-based DJ&T Foundation, named in fond memory of Bob’s wife, Dorothy Jo and mother, Tilly.

“Following up on a funding request from WRR for $5,000 for an avian ventilator, Mr. Barker placed a personal phone call to Lynn during which he mentioned that he had done a little research and found nothing but praise for our organization and our work with animals. He then said he was sending $250,000 to support the purchase of the ventilator as well as many other things he knows we need for all the animals we rescue.”

Bob Barker Wants Investigation Into Animal Injuries And Deaths On Film Sets

At a news conference on Thursday, PETA, along with legendary The Price Is Right host Bob Barker and The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon, will call on the American Humane Association (AHA) to launch an immediate investigation of more than a dozen claims by whistleblowers that the AHA’s failure to adequately oversee several recent and current film and TV productions has led to animal injuries and deaths.

The group is calling for a monitoring system overhaul and will present recommendations for how the AHA can make immediate changes that address allegations, including AHA management’s alleged complicity in filming potentially dangerous sequences and a pervasive culture at AHA in which “relationship-building” with producers and directors has become more important than effective oversight.

PETA and Bob Barker welcomed a host of stars at the grand opening of PETA’s new Bob Barker Building, named in honor of the longtime animal advocate who donated $2.5 million for the renovation of the historic structure in Los Angeles yesterday.

Bob Barker Says No To Stampede And Rodeo

Just days after speaking out against The Price Is Right’s recent promotion of the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo, iconic television host Bob Barker has fired off another letter on PETA's behalf to the event’s main sponsors—including Bell Canada, General Motors of Canada Limited, Anheuser-Busch International, and TransAlta Corporation—to urge them to turn their backs on the notoriously violent and deadly rodeo.

In the letter, Barker points out that horses routinely die in the stampede—one had to be euthanized on the first day of last year’s spectacle, and six horses died in 2010’s event alone. Many more sustain painful injuries.

“The Calgary Stampede has long been synonymous with animal abuse,” writes Barker. “I hope you will agree that no animal deserves to suffer like this in the name of a tradition that should have died out with the covered wagon’s last ride. My friends at PETA and I hope to hear that you will no longer sponsor this event.”

Stars Help Launch Bill To End Cruelty In Circuses

Yesterday on Capitol Hill, renowned celebrity animal protectionists Bob Barker and Jorja Fox joined London-based Animal Defenders International (ADI), the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and members of Congress to launch a Bill that will change the way in which animals are used in the name of entertainment in the USA.

This historic launch comes at a crucial time as the UK Government considers the plight of wild animals currently languishing in circuses and follows the Commons debate in June where MPs voted overwhelmingly for a ban. Bob Barker Petitions For Spay-And-Neuter Law

After hearing that the Obama administration is launching a new website called We the People that will allow users to create their own petitions, which, when achieving 5,000 supporters, will be submitted to the administration for review, spay-and-neuter guru Bob Barker has teamed up with PETA to petition for a mandatory spay-and-neuter law.

The law would apply to all animals adopted from shelters or bought from pet stores, puppy mills, and breeders until the nation’s overpopulation crisis has abated and all the homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. have homes to call their own.

Bob Barker Rescues Chimpanzees

Television celebrity Bob Barker has come to the rescue of five chimpanzees in Texas who need a permanent home. Upon hearing about the plight of the chimpanzees left behind in a facility that has gone bankrupt, Barker made a contribution of $230,000 to Chimp Haven to begin building bedrooms and a habitat for them.

He is also underwriting the cost of their care for one year. Barker’s donation provides immediate relief for the Texas chimpanzees, and it launches Chimp Haven’s plan to expand its accommodations for non-government supported chimpanzees who need homes. Chimp Haven President, Dr. Linda Brent, says, “I hope Mr. Barker’s generous gesture will inspire others to follow his example so that we can complete this project and bring more chimpanzees to Chimp Haven.” The core construction to provide immediate refuge to the five chimpanzees is estimated to cost $170,000, but a minimum of an additional $200,000 is needed to complete the overall project.

“These chimpanzees have spent their entire lives on concrete in cages,” said Barker. “They will now be able to climb and swing and hoot through the forest-like surroundings of Chimp Haven. They are curious and smart and are expected to adapt well to their new surroundings.”

Longtime animal rights activist Bob Barker and his bunny friend Benny have a request for all compassionate consumers: Please stay away from products that have been tested on animals.

To honor the 25th anniversary of PETA's Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide, the pair star in a brand-new video for PETA in which Barker urges shoppers to visit PETA.org for a list of cruelty-free companies.

In the past 25 years, PETA’s Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide list has grown from just three to more than 1,100 cosmetics and household-product companies that have banned animal testing. Although thousands of companies use only modern, non-animal methods to assess product safety, some companies—such as Clorox and L’Oréal—still drip chemicals into animals’ eyes and smear substances on their skins in archaic and painful experiments that are not required by law. As Barker explains in the video, “The animals suffer intensely. Some even go blind.” He emphasizes, “The price is never right on products tested on animals.”

Bob Barker Wants Jambbas Ranch Tours Stopped

TV legend and former The Price Is Right emcee Bob Barker has sent an urgent letter to members of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners. Barker is urging officials to reverse a recent county ordinance amendment that makes it no longer illegal for Fayetteville-based Jambbas Ranch Tours to keep exotic and dangerous animals.

Currently, Jambbas confines a fox, a raccoon, an alligator, and a bear to small, barren enclosures that deprive the animals of everything that’s natural and important to them. The bear, Ben, shows telltale signs of extreme psychological distress—he constantly paces the small cage, paws at the ground, and bangs his head against the cage walls.

Before the amendment was adopted, the county ordinance had banned the keeping of exotic and dangerous animals within the county. Barker and PETA are calling on the commissioners to reverse the amendment, which was passed in haste at the request of the tawdry roadside zoo’s owner when he was faced with prosecution, and to enforce the original ordinance. This would allow for the fox, raccoon, and alligator to be relocated and for Ben the bear, who is being kept in solitary confinement, to finally be released to a sanctuary where he can receive expert care and live out his years in the company of other bears.

Bob Barker Donates $2 Million To Injured Soldiers

Celebrity Bob Barker made a $2 million charity donation to the Semper Fi Fund (SFF) yesterday to provide assistance to injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

Barker, who was a fighter pilot during World War II, is hoping that his donation and support for young Veterans will inspire others to give and commit to making sure that not one young Marine, sailor, airman and soldier or their family members are in need during their long-term recoveries.

The Semper Fi Fund provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions for post 9-11 Marines and sailors, as well as soldiers, airmen and Coast Guardsmen who are injured while serving in support of Marine forces. The Fund provides relief to service members and their families for immediate financial needs that arise during hospitalization and recovery, as well as perpetuating needs such as home modifications, customized transportation and specialized equipment.

Operation Lion Ark is the biggest rescue and airlift of lions ever seen.

Lion Cub Named After Bob Barker Following Rescue

Three tiny lion cubs saved from an animal circus in Bolivia by Animal Defenders International (ADI) have been named after three people who helped make the rescue possible.

The cubs, two males and a female, now named Percy, Bob and Nancy will be part of a huge airlift of 25 rescued lions.

Bob is named after the famous Price is Right host Bob Barker and Nancy after Nancy Burnet, Director of United Activists for Animal Rights, who works closely with Mr. Barker. Bob Barker made a substantial donation to ADI which has enabled the organization to undertake a huge rescue operation in Bolivia, emptying all the circuses of animals following a national ban on the use of animals in travelling circuses.

Jorja Fox Helps Rescue Circus Lions From Bolivia

Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses landed yesterday at San Francisco airport, before heading on to a life of luxury at the ARK 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County.

ADI, which has previously rescued and relocated animals in Europe, South America and Africa have described it as one of the most complex logistical operation they have ever undertaken but say it will be worth all of the effort when the animals walk free.

CSI actress Jorja Fox, the ADI spokesperson for the operation, greeted the lions at San Francisco airport.
