Stars Line Up For Fusion Festival In Birmingham

Soccer superstar Brandi Chastain and former MLB all-star pitcher John Smoltz – teammates and leaders after day one of the 11th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino – shot even par-72 to earn a five-stroke victory at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

Chastain and Smoltz each took home $20,000 for their designated charities.

The winning duo, who shot a two-day total of six-under par, 138, overcame a difficult performance on the front nine to secure the title. Leading the tournament after day one by two strokes over eventual second-place finishers Roger Clemens and Ahmad Rashad (-1, 143), Chastain/Smoltz fell behind by one after eight holes.

Working in concert with their respective foursome of amateur golfers, Griffey, Jr. shot a 19-under par 53 in the first round of the celeb-am Thursday, while Wright’s team shot a sensational 22-under par 50 during Friday’s second round. Griffey, Jr.‘s team tied host Michael Jordan’s foursome but earned the win via tiebreaker.

Ne-Yo Encourages Attendance And Education During School Visit

Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo surprised 588 students with a mini-concert and acted as the “Principal for the Day” at Aki Kurose Middle School Academy in south Seattle, the most diverse zip code in the country, yesterday.

Ne-Yo performed live for the Aki Kurose student body to celebrate their win in the 2011 Get Schooled Fall Attendance Challenge – a seven week competition to improve daily attendance rates nationwide.

Sponsored by the Get Schooled Foundation, the friendly competition included nearly 80,000 students at 73 schools in 17 states between Oct. 3 and Nov. 18. Aki Kurose improved its attendance by a remarkable 3.7 percent and succeeded in engaging more than 70 percent of its students in the various components of the challenge. Students who connect with their schools are more likely to attend schools. Over the course of the challenge, active schools improved their attendance by an average of 2.8 percent and an additional 1,000 students came to school during that time, with some schools increasing their attendance as much as eight percent. On average, schools see less than a two percent annual gain in attendance.

On Saturday, December 19th, Ne-Yo sent out a tweet announcing the First Annual Fund Raising Program for Compound Entertainment.

This year’s recipients will be the Reseda Cowboys, a football team and cheer group managed by the Valley Youth Conference, a non-profit located in Reseda, California, established in 1966. Valley Youth is a 100% volunteer organization with over 10,000 participants. Their activities cover the entire San Fernando Valley, and they have a year-round sport program, which the Reseda Cowboys are part of. The program nurtures boys and girls from the ages of 5 to 14.
