Meet Mary J. Blige In FFAWN Celebrity Charity Auction

As a follow up to her recent Honors charity concert on May 1 in New York City, superstar Mary J. Blige is partnering with luxury charity auction site charitybuzz.com to raise funds for her nonprofit organization FFAWN (Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now).

The evening was held in honor of the 2011 FFAWN scholarship recipients, and proceeds will directly benefit FFAWN’s scholarship fund, which ensures that educational opportunities are made available to young women so that they can get the training needed to be successful.

On May 1, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah and ELLE magazine’s VP, Editor-in-Chief/Brand Content, Robbie Myers, will host FFAWN’s second annual Mary J. Blige Honors Concert. They’ll join close celebrity friends and trailblazers in the entertainment industry, and all will pay tribute to young girls with big dreams of becoming the leaders of tomorrow.

The evening will be held in honor of the 2011 FFAWN scholarship recipients, and proceeds will directly benefit FFAWN’s scholarship fund, which ensures that educational opportunities are made available to young women so that they can get the training needed to be successful. In 2010, FFAWN sent 25 young women to college with full four-year scholarships. All 25 remain enrolled and have maintained GPA scholarship requirements of 3.0; eight of the students made the dean’s list their first semester.

Nine-time Grammy Award–winning artist Blige, who will perform, and FFAWN co-founder Steve Stoute will celebrate the dedication of these special young women and continue to inspire them to achieve greatness. Joining them is a star-studded cast of leading ladies and role models, including Christina Aguilera, Anita Baker, Jennifer Hudson, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jill Scott, among others performing that night.

Wyclef Jean To Perform At The Truth For Haiti

Wyclef Jean will perform at a special charity event to help the people of Haiti tomorrow, December 16.

While Haitians are still facing darkness and despair almost a year after the tragic earthquake that rocked Haiti, their courage and vibrancy continue to shine and inspire. THE TRUTH exhibition is Urban Zen’s celebration of Haiti’s resilient spirit, showcasing a dynamic country bursting with life. The Premier Exhibition and Auction will raise funds to give “Gifts of Love” packages to the Haitian people this holiday season and into the New Year. These packages will include vital supplies: shoes, solar flashlights and whistles to offset night attacks and rapes on women living in the Haitian camps. Cholera relief supplies will also be added as a critical component in these “Gifts of Love.”

Fashion icon and Urban Zen founder Donna Karan & music mogul Andre Harrell will host the launch of THE TRUTH at the Urban Zen Center, 711 Greenwich Street, New York, tomorrow night. Human rights activist Kerry Kennedy will be Master of Ceremonies, renowned fashion photographer Marc Baptiste is the Exhibition’s Curator, and Christie’s Lydia Fenet is the evening’s Auctioneer. The Premier Reception will also feature musical performances from Grammy Award-winning artist Wyclef Jean and special guests. Plus, a LIVE three-hour Twitter party hosted by Kim Kardashian will also take place.

Walk With Oprah And Friends For 10 Charities

O, The Oprah Magazine will celebrate its 10th anniversary in New York City from May 7-9, and registration for the Live Your Best Life Walk on Sunday, May 9 is now open.

Oprah Winfrey and special guests will lead a walk to raise money for 10 charities, selected by the editors of O, The Oprah Magazine. The top 10 fundraisers will walk alongside Oprah, and a celebration at the finish line for all participants will close the weekend’s festivities.

The walk takes place on the final day of the weekend-long celebration, and is open to all who want to take part and give back. A limited number of tickets are still available for the Live Your Best Life Weekend event at oprah.com/oturns10, but even non-ticket holders can participate as well.

Mary J. Blige Swaps Music For Charity Fashion

Singer Mary J. Blige has put the down the microphone and teamed up with fashion designer Catherine Malandrino to create a new line of t-shirts to benefit the singers charity, Foundation For the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN).

The t-shirts, which help raise awareness for the empowerment of underprivileged women, have a low cut neck and will feature lyrics from Blige’s songs, including the phrases “I’m Love” and “I’m Power.”

They will be available at Malandrino’s boutiques as well as Bloomingdale’s in New York starting on February 17.

Anderson Cooper To Host New Yorkers For Children Gala

CNN’s Anderson Cooper is to host the New Yorkers For Children 10th Annual Fall Gala in September.

The gala event – to be held at Cipriani 42 in New York City on September 22 – will honor Mary J. Blige for her work in founding FFAWN, an organization that aims to help all women gain the confidence and skills they need to reach their full individual potential.

New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) was founded in 1996 by former Commissioner of the Administration for Children’s Services Nicholas Scoppetta, as the non-profit partner to Children’s Services. NYFC has developed programs that make a difference in the lives of young people including college scholarships, tutoring programs, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

Project Angel Food Hosts Celebrity Shopping Spree

With the Holidays around the corner, Project Angel Food kicked off their annual DIVINE DESIGN on Thursday December 4th, celebrating style and philanthropy with a big dose of holiday shopping.

David Arquette, Eric McCormack, and Elton John’s partner David Furnish were some of the stars who helped out during the weeklong event, in which top designers sold fashion, furniture, beauty and gift items, with proceeds going to provide meals for victims of HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. For every $5 spent at Divine Design, Project Angel Food can cook and deliver a meal to someone facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other debilitating illnesses.

R & B star Mary J. Blige, along with her partner Steve Stoute have announced plans to launch the Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, Inc. (FFAWN), a new charity initiative to inspire women from all walks of life to reach their individual potential.

FFAWN, which is based in Blige’s hometown of Yonkers, NY, is intended to help women gain the confidence and skills needed to achieve success.

“Most of my life was centered around living for the moment. I had very few resources and very little real life education to make good decisions,” Blige said. At a recent visit to Roosevelt High School in Yonkers she implored students to “Please get your education. Education is key. Education is power.”
