New Years Eve Stars Stand Up To Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is proud to announce a new public service announcement (PSA) featuring the stellar ensemble cast of the holiday romantic comedy NEW YEAR’S EVE from director Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, Valentine’s Day), that will appear in national and regional publications during the month of December.

The new SU2C print PSA campaign asks the public to join the cast of New Year’s Eve—which boasts some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Robert De Niro, Josh Duhamel, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara — to help change the odds and stand up in the fight against cancer.

The PSA’s theme, “It’s Up2 All of Us to Stand Up To Cancer,” underscores SU2C’s core mantra: each and every one of us can make a difference in the fight against cancer. One in two men and one in three women in the U.S. will be diagnosed in their lifetimes, and this campaign calls on everyone to stand together to change those devastating odds.

Marlee Matlin And Dana Delany Stand Up For Their Fathers

Marlee Matlin and Dana Delany have both paid tribute to their fathers to help raise awareness of Stand Up To Cancer.

“For people who are afraid to TALK about cancer, for people who are afraid to communicate with their loved ones about it, and for the people who want to pretend cancer doesn’t exist, either delaying diagnosis or not getting regular checkups, the consequences can be fatal,” said Marlee, whose father was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, in a post in the Huffington Post. "Doing nothing about cancer will kill you. That’s why in honor of my Dad this Father’s Day, I’m STANDING UP, encouraging men like my Dad to talk openly and freely when it comes to matters of health. It’s up to us to remind our Dads to get regular checkups, and if something just doesn’t feel right, to get to the doctor. Tell your Dad to make sure to deal with your family honestly about your fears. No one should ever be ashamed to cry. This Father’s Day, let’s remind our Dads that family and friends are probably the best weapons one could have against cancer. They can share the burden, potentially provide information and resources or just be there to hold your hand.

“I love you Dad. I want us to spend many, many more Father’s Days together. It may be true that silence is easy, but believe me when I say that when it comes to cancer, silence is the last thing the world will hear from me. You can bet on it.”

A group of 25 disabled young adults will join former Hootie and the Blowfish singer Darius Rucker on stage at the ACM Country Music Awards this Sunday to perform a song that they wrote.

The song – Music From The Heart – was written last summer by the 25 youngsters and ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp songwriters Brett James and Chris Young. The special moment will be performed during the 46th ACM Awards, to be broadcast live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Sunday, April 3rd, 2011 on the CBS Television Network.

Reality TV Star Named As Celebrity Charity Ambassador

Reality TV personality David Good, best known for getting a second chance on ABC’s “Bachelor Pad” after Season 5 of “The Bachelorette” has been named a Celebrity Ambassador for Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), which funds groundbreaking research aimed at getting new treatments to patients faster, and to rally the public around the fight against the disease.

To date, SU2C’s Celebrity Ambassadors have participated in two television telecasts across major networks and cable stations in 2008 and 2010, which raised more than $180 million in pledged donations. SU2C celebrity ambassadors also participate in fundraising events and serve as spokespeople in public service announcements and media interviews to generate awareness about cancer’s devastating impact and the role research plays in the effort to end it.

Jake Gyllenhaal Stands Up To Cancer With Major League Baseball

A founding donor of Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), Major League Baseball (MLB) is continuing its commitment to help eradicate cancer by dedicating Game One of the World Series to SU2C.

As millions of baseball fans tune in to watch the American League’s Texas Rangers and National League’s San Francisco Giants compete in the first game of the World Series on Wednesday, October 27th on FOX, MLB will once again bring the fight against cancer to the forefront and help raise funds for groundbreaking “translational” research designed to bring new therapies to patients quickly and save lives.

During the seventh-inning stretch of Game One of the World Series, a moving PSA featuring Academy Award nominated actor, Jake Gyllenhaal will play on the jumbo screens for the crowd, as well as for millions at home watching FOX. Fans in the stadium will then be asked to stand in unison as sportscaster Joe Buck rallies the crowd — and the viewing audience — via an on-air call-to-action to “launch stars” in tribute to those diagnosed with cancer. With a donation of as little as one dollar, a star can be launched in the SU2C constellation on su2c.org to honor a loved one in the fight now, a survivor who is cancer-free, or in memory of someone lost to the disease. 100% of all donations received go directly to innovative cancer research. This effort builds on the presence of electronic SU2C banners which have been seen behind home plate in ballparks throughout the playoffs.

Christina Applegate's Right Action For Women

Most likely to be the only celebrity to win an award with the word ‘ass’ in it — the 2010 Do Something Kick-Ass For Survival Award — Christina Applegate is continuing to “kick cancer’s ass” by launching a charity, Right Action for Women, to help women who can’t afford the proper treatment for cancer.

“It’s a program giving financial aid to high-risk women who can’t afford to get MRIs, which is how I found my cancer,” Applegate tells WENN. “It’s unfortunate that insurance companies (in America) don’t cover the cost of that. It’s such an incredible device because you can find it at an early detection stage. We started our pilot program and started helping women already, even though we aren’t launched. The other aspect of the program is to do genetic counseling and help women understand what being high-risk means, and understanding what foods are good for their bloods and how to prevent this disease from happening. That has been my mission.” Applegate said.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, Applegate was fortunate that she survived, mainly because the early form of cancer was detected before it grew serious. Right Action for Women provides financial aid to women for MRI tests, which are screening tests for women with risks of getting breast cancer. MRI tests are usually not covered by insurance and can be seen as a financial nuisance to some. Applegate’s charity hopes to bring light to the importance of MRI tests and to preach the seriousness of these potentially life-saving tests.

The Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) television event is set to air live and commercial-free on FOX, September 10, 2010, at 8p.m. EST & PST / 7 p.m. CST. Joining ABC, CBS and NBC, FOX will donate one hour of live simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised September 10th fundraising special, to be broadcast from Los Angeles.

Additionally, VH1, HBO Latino, TV One and G4 have agreed to air the SU2C event. They join HBO, Discovery Health, E!, MLB Network and The Style Network for an historic evening to raise much-needed funds for groundbreaking cancer research.

“Cancer claims one person every minute of every day in the United States – 1500 people every single day. This year it will take the lives of more than half a million people in this country, and almost eight million people worldwide… Cancer is a crisis and we want to convey that ALL Americans can play a role in helping the scientists who are working to end it. We’re delighted that the entertainment community is banding together in such a big way to help us get that word out,” said Laura Ziskin, who will produce the September 10th broadcast. Ziskin is a cancer survivor. Her film credits include the Spider-Man trilogy, As Good As It Gets, and Pretty Woman; she also produced the 74th and 79th Annual Academy Awards.
