The Proclaimers Support Charity Walkers

Scottish duo The Proclaimers – famous for tunes such as I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – are showing their support – in more ways than one – for a major charity event this weekend by appearing on a bra.

The duo – comprised of Chris and Charlie Reid – have had their caricatures drawn onto both cups of the bra by cartoonist Malky McCormick. The bra will then be auctioned at the Edinburgh Moonwalk tomorrow night.

“We could never say no to helping a charity like this,” said Chris. “Every family has been touched by cancer, so we were only happy to do something. Even though Malky has drawn us as caricatures we are flattered by out portrayal – we have seen the drawings he has done of other people!”

The Edinburgh Moonwalk is part of a series of walks being held around Britain to raise money for breast cancer research. Organized by a charity called Walk The Walk, the walks feature men and women walking wearing bras and has to date raised in excess of £48 million for vital breast cancer causes. Launched in 1996 and with a patron in the form of Prince Charles, the charity donates its proceeds to Breakthrough Breast Cancer and other organizations.

Tomorrow’s Edinburgh Moonwalk will see 10,000 people pound the streets of the Scottish capital in their decorated bras to raise money for the cause.

“It’s a shame we can’t do the walk,” said Charlie Reid. “I am very interested in doing it in the future – possibly next year.”

Get On The Virtual Catwalk With The Stars For Breast Cancer

Sarah Ferguson is one of a number of British celebrities who have taken part in a celebrity modelling campaign to raise money for breast cancer.

Singer and actor Duncan James, Radio One DJ Sara Cox, TV presenter June Sarpong, model Abigail Clancy – girlfriend to England footballer Peter Crouch – Olympic swimmer and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Mark Foster, Britain’s Next Top Model judge Gerry DeVeaux, Leah Wood, Jade Jagger, and singer Bryan Ferry have also signed on to support the Million Model Catwalk campaign of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

The campaign is a unique and exciting example of using cyberspace to raise awareness of a disease. Users can visit millionmodelcatwalk.com to watch themselves model on the virtual catwalk alongside the ten celebrities by simply uploading a photo and choosing clothes from the FTBC range. The actual clothes are also on sale.

“If I’ve only raised breast cancer awareness with one person – then I am happy and the charity photo shoot has been worthwhile,” said Duncan James.

Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC) was established in 1990 in the US by Ralph Lauren after his dear friend and fashion editor of the Washington Post, Nina Hyde, died of breast cancer. FTBC was launched in the UK in 1996 by Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Now in its 13th year, Breakthrough hope this year the FTBC campaign can reach new heights with a brand new fashionable and fun approach.

The money raised from FTBC helps Breakthrough Breast Cancer work towards their vision of a future free from the fear of breast cancer. Breast cancer still remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst women and over 46,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK and it sadly claims the lives of 12,000. In the UK the FTBC campaign has raised over £9m for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, supporting vital research, education and campaigning work.

Naomi Campbell Opens Cancer Unit

Supermodel Naomi Campbell opened a new cancer research unit at a hospital in London last week and spoke about the effects of the disease on her own family.

Campbell’s mother, Valerie, is in remission from a particularly aggressive type of the disease that the unit at Guy’s Hospital will focus on.

“It’s something that’s never really happened in my family, so it was researching, reading a lot of books, finding out about how to take care of her, what was the best treatment and where to get the best treatment.

“It just made me more aware because up until that point I hadn’t got checked on a regular basis like you should. I heard about breast cancer but I just thought it’s never going to happen to me. But now I’ve learnt it doesn’t discriminate, this disease, it can happen to anybody.

“As someone who’s seen breast cancer first hand I know it can be a devastating disease.”

Charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer will fund the £4.2 million unit for five years.

“I’m very proud to be here today to officially open the Breakthrough Breast Cancer research unit,” said Campbell.

Stars Target Breast Cancer

Some famous names from British entertainment are lending their faces to a new advertising campaign targeting breast cancer.

Natalie Imbruglia, Anna Friel, Alan Carr, Edith Bowman, and Twiggy have been shot by acclaimed photographer Rankin wearing Fashion Targets Breast Cancer T-shirts for the campaign from Breakthrough Breast Cancer – the UK’s leading charity fighting breast cancer. The campaign aims to raise £1 million (US$2 million) to assist with research, campaigning, and education about the disease which kills around 35 women every day in the UK.

The campaign’s message is “Whatever your reason, wear one,” and each celebrity taking part has agreed to send themselves up by featuring their own comic reason. In the ads, which can be seen on Breakthrough’s website, Alan Carr jokes that the T-shirt shows off his man boobs, and Natalie Imbruglia admits that she is supporting FTBC because she has a thing about pastel colours. However, they also all see the serious side of the disease which affects 44,000 women in the UK every year.

“As a woman, I feel it is important to support this wonderful campaign,” said Imbruglia. “I was shocked when I saw the latest UK figures – 1 in 9 women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. The Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign makes so much sense. All you have to do, like me, is buy a T-shirt and wear it with pride. You will be helping to build on the £8.5 million already raised by this fantastic campaign to help Breakthrough Breast Cancer continue its crucial research, campaigning and education work. Breakthrough’s vision is a future free from the fear of breast cancer. I really do believe that together we can help Breakthrough achieve this. I can only reiterate what this year’s advertising campaign is saying: whatever your reason – please please wear one.”

A range of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer clothing – including T-shirts, swimwear, and accessories – will be available at stores such as Marks and Spencer, Topshop, and River Island. The range will also be available from the FTBC website. The campaign is Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s premier fundraising campaign and has raised over £8.5 million over the last 11 years. The money raised by this year’s campaign will go towards projects like the Triple Negative Trial – the first UK-based clinical trial to improve the treatment of “triple negative” breast cancer, a type of aggressive breast cancer that often affects young African women.

“My real reason for supporting Fashion Targets Breast Cancer is simple: No less than £4.50 from this T-shirt goes directly to Breakthrough Breast Cancer,” said Alan Carr, who represents the 300 men diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year. “So there really is no excuse is there?
