DoSomething.org Announces Top 20 Celebs Gone Good 2011

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, released today its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born This Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber, up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

Stars To Judge Contest For Arts Education

Imagine a world without art. Boring, right? DoSomething.org is once again asking teens to use their creative talent as a tool to advocate for arts education.

Make Art, Save Art is a campaign mobilizing young artists nationwide to advocate for the arts by submitting artwork and testimonials on the importance of arts education online at www.makeartsaveart.org and sharing those artistic expressions with their social networks (i.e. Facebook and Twitter).

The top 10 artists with the most shares through social media networks are entered into a finalist pool, and one artist will be selected by a panel of expert judges. The winner will receive a $5,000 grant for their school art program and a $1,000 college scholarship.

Justin Bieber's Under The Mistletoe For Charity

Under The Mistletoe comes out on November 1, and will benefit two of Justin’s favorite charities, Pencils of Promise and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“Universal [Music] never actually allowed money from the album to go to charity, so it’s kind of a unique thing and I’m very happy and proud of what we’ve done,” he said.

Twilight Star Helps With Charity Scavenger Hunt

This summer, over 20,000 teams consisting of more than 70,000 young people got off their beach towels and onto their mobile phones to take action on key social issues impacting their communities. They participated in an 11-day Scavenger Hunt, spearheaded by DoSomething.org and Lenovo to make a difference in their communities, tackling serious issues like poverty and animal welfare.

Teams received daily challenges via text message, social media and e-mail. Sample challenges included donating school supplies for underserved kids and setting up an e-mail address for a senior citizen. 18,500 individual actions were reported via text message alone.

“The Scavenger Hunt was a great way to become introduced to and involved with a variety of important causes. It was awesome to rally around causes as a team, and so empowering to be a part of a nationwide movement,” said teen participant, Sarah Cronk. “Receiving updates on my phone made the hunt especially fun and easy because I could complete challenges and report back while on the go.”
