Usher To Be Honored By LA's BEST

LA’s BEST — Better Educated Students for Tomorrow — is to hold its annual Family Brunch on June 7, and will honor singer Usher with a Family Focus Award.

The Annual Family Brunch – to be held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles – salutes the importance of family and provides an opportunity for LA’s BEST to honor those in the community who support its program and enrich the lives of children.

Joining Usher in receiving honors at the event will be Harvard graduate and Teach for America corps member Mirla Urzua, who will be honored with the Alumnus Award, and Variety Magazine will be honored with the Community Partner Award for their creative support of LA’s BEST. Nigel Lythgoe will also make an appearance to present one of the awards.

LA’s BEST will also celebrate 20 student winners of the LA’s BEST citywide writing and art contest and their families.

Nigel Lythgoe Asks Hollywood For Help

Reality TV boss Nigel Lythgoe has appealed to Hollywood’s rich and famous to help him tackle child poverty in Los Angeles.

The former executive producer of American Idol and current judge on So You Think You Can Dance has placed a full-page advertisement in Daily Variety asking Hollywood to help the needy.

In the advert, the 49-year-old revealed he will direct a special talent show for children in the city on 14 December.

“This country and this town in particular have been so good to me,” wrote Lythgoe. “There is one side, where people from all over the world can come together creatively and fulfill their dreams. Yet, there is this other side of L.A., the darker side. All proceeds from this event will go to [”LA’s BEST":http://www.looktothestars.org/charity/1229-las-best]. Your support will make an enormous difference for thousands of children who, without LA’s BEST, would be on the streets. If we can change the lives of children… then we can change the darker side of L.A."

LA’s BEST is a nationally recognized after school education, enrichment and recreation program serving more than 28,000 children with the greatest needs and fewest resources throughout the City of Los Angeles.
