Elton John Warns Complacent Teens About Unsafe Sex

At a gala for his AIDS charity on November 16, Elton John said that young people are putting themselves in danger of getting HIV by engaging in unsafe sex. He warned that the latest generation is “complacent” about the risk of getting the virus.

He said that even though AIDS is not a new disease, higher rates of HIV infection are being seen in African American women, the rural south and in the gay community.

Speaking to Radio 1’s Newsbeat, the singer said, “We are finding that too many young people are not listening to what we are saying. I’m afraid people do get a little complacent about the disease by going out and having unsafe sex. It’s a cyclical thing. Every ten years a new generation comes along and you have to re-educate them.”

Also present at the event held for the Elton John AIDS Foundation were Sharon Stone, former United States president Bill Clinton and Daniel Craig.

Elton John AIDS Foundation To Honor Sharon Stone And Bill Clinton

The Elton John AIDS Foundation will honor Sharon Stone and Bill Clinton at a charity event this month.

The Enduring Vision Gala is an annual event that last year raised over $2 million for the organization. Sir Elton’s event has attracted celebrities such as Gladys Knight, Tim Allen and Whoopi Goldberg in the past, and this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever.

Sir Elton set up his AIDS Foundation to provide funding for educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and/or the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and for programs that provide services to people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.

Choose Elton John's Set List For Charity Concert

Elton John is set to perform at Andy Roddick’s charity gala in November, and YOU can choose his set list.

A new charity auction is offering two tickets to The Andy Roddick Foundation gala at the Hilton Hotel in Austin, TX on November 30, 2009 at 6:30pm with seating at the head table with Andy Roddick and possibly Elton John. In addition, the winning bid will choose the set of songs Elton will sing at the gala. This amazing package also includes a two nights stay at the Austin Hilton Hotel.

Andy Roddick’s foundation is a non profit, nonsectarian organization. Simply put, it is their mission to raise funds and distribute them to institutions that care for children who have been abused, have catastrophic illnesses, and are at risk for neglect. President Obama To Award Medals Of Freedom Today

President Obama has named 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

This year’s awardees were chosen for their work as agents of change. Among their many accomplishments in fields ranging from sports and art to science and medicine to politics and public policy, these men and women have changed the world for the better. They have blazed trails and broken down barriers. They have discovered new theories, launched new initiatives, and opened minds to new possibilities.

President Obama said, "These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. Their tremendous accomplishments span fields from science to sports, from fine arts to foreign affairs. Yet they share one overarching trait: Each has been an agent of change. Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way.

“Their relentless devotion to breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens sets a standard to which we all should strive. It is my great honor to award them the Medal of Freedom.”

President Obama will present the awards at a ceremony on Wednesday, August 12.

The following individuals will receive the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom:

Nancy Goodman Brinker. Nancy Goodman Brinker is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s leading breast cancer grass roots organization. Brinker established the organization in memory of her sister, who passed away from breast cancer in 1980. Through innovative events like Race for the Cure, the organization has given and invested over $1.3 billion for research, health services and education services since its founding in 1982 and developed a worldwide grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists who are working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find cures. Brinker has received several awards for her work, and has also served in government as U.S. Ambassador to Hungary (2001 – 2003), Chief of Protocol of the U.S. (2007 – 2009), and Chair of the President’s Cancer Panel (1990). In May, Nancy Goodman Brinker was named the first-ever World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control.

Pedro José Greer, Jr. Dr. Pedro Jose Greer is a physician and the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at the Florida International University School of Medicine, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society. Dr. Greer is the founder of Camillus Health Concern, an agency that provides medical care to over 10,000 homeless patients a year in the city of Miami. He is also the founder and medical director of the St. John Bosco Clinic which provides basic primary medical care to disadvantaged children and adults in the Little Havana community. He has been recognized by Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr, and Jimmy Carter for his work with Miami’s poor . He is also the recipient of three Papal Medals as well as the prestigious MacArthur “genius grant”. He currently has a joint private practice with his father, Pedro Greer, Sr.

Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking is an internationally-recognized theoretical physicist who has a severe physical disability due to motor neuron disease. He is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a post previously held by Isaac Newton in 1669. In addition to his pioneering academic research in mathematics and physics, Hawking has penned three popular science books, including the bestselling A Brief History of Time. Hawking, a British citizen, believes that non-academics should be able to access his work just as physicists are, and has also published a children’s science book with his daughter. His persistence and dedication has unlocked new pathways of discovery and inspired everyday citizens.

Jack Kemp. Jack Kemp, who passed away in May 2009, served as a U.S. Congressman (1971 – 1989), Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (1989 – 1993), and Republican Nominee for Vice President (1996). Prior to entering public service, Kemp was a professional football player (1957 – 1969) and led the Buffalo Bills to American Football League championships in 1964 and 1965. In Congress and as a Cabinet Secretary, Kemp was a self-described “bleeding heart conservative” who worked to encourage development in underserved urban communities. In the years leading up to his death, Kemp continued seeking new solutions, raising public attention about the challenge of poverty, and working across party lines to improve the lives of Americans and others around the world.

Sen. Edward Kennedy. Senator Edward M. Kennedy has served in the United States Senate for forty-six years, and has been one of the greatest lawmakers – and leaders – of our time. From reforming our public schools to strengthening civil rights laws and supporting working Americans, Senator Kennedy has dedicated his career to fighting for equal opportunity, fairness and justice for all Americans. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that every American has access to quality and affordable health care, and has succeeded in doing so for countless children, seniors, and Americans with disabilities. He has called health care reform the “cause of his life,” and has championed nearly every health care bill enacted by Congress over the course of the last five decades. Known as the “Lion of the Senate,” Senator Kennedy is widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his commitment to progress and his ability to legislate.

Billie Jean King. Billie Jean King was an acclaimed professional tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s, and has helped champion gender equality issues not only in sports, but in all areas of public life. King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, then the most viewed tennis match in history. King became one of the first openly lesbian major sports figures in America when she came out in 1981. Following her professional tennis career, King became the first woman commissioner in professional sports when she co-founded and led the World Team Tennis (WTT) League. The U.S. Tennis Association named the National Tennis Center, where the US Open is played, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2006. She was a Founding Board Member of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Rev. Joseph Lowery. Reverend Lowery has been a leader in the U.S. civil rights movement since the early 1950s. It was in Mobile, Alabama, at this time –that he headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association; the organization which led the Movement to desegregate buses and public accommodations. Rev. Lowery later co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a leading civil rights organization, with Dr. Martin Luther King, and was chosen by Dr. King to Chair the Delegation delivering the demands of the Selma-to-Montgomery March to Alabama Governor George Wallace.. Rev. Lowery is a minister in the United Methodist Church, and has continued to highlight important civil rights issues in the U.S. and worldwide, including apartheid in South Africa, since the 1960s.

Joe Medicine Crow – High Bird. Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, the last living Plains Indian war chief, is the author of seminal works in Native American history and culture. He is the last person alive to have received direct oral testimony from a participant in the Battle of the Little Bighorn: his grandfather was a scout for General George Armstrong Custer. A veteran of World War II, Medicine Crow accomplished during the war all of the four tasks required to become a “war chief,” including stealing fifty Nazi SS horses from a German camp. Medicine Crow was the first member of his tribe to attend college, receiving his master’s degree in anthropology in 1939, and continues to lecture at universities and notable institutions like the United Nations. His contributions to the preservation of the culture and history of the First Americans are matched only by his importance as a role model to young Native Americans across the country.

Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official from a major city in the United States when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk encouraged lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens to live their lives openly and believed coming out was the only way they could change society and achieve social equality. Milk, alongside San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, was shot and killed in 1978 by Dan White, a former city supervisor. Milk is revered nationally and globally as a pioneer of the LGBT civil rights movement for his exceptional leadership and dedication to equal rights.

Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor was the first woman ever to sit on the United States Supreme Court. Nominated by President Reagan in 1981, she served until her retirement in 2006. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, O’Connor served as a state trial and appellate judge in Arizona. She was also as a member of the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman in the United States ever to lead a state senate as Senate Majority Leader. At a time when women rarely entered the legal profession, O’Connor graduated Stanford Law School third in her class, where she served on the Stanford Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Since retiring from the Supreme Court in 2006, O’Connor has served as Chancellor of the College of William and Mary, on the Board of Trustees of the National Constitution Center, and participated in the Iraq Study Group in 2006, as well as giving numerous lectures on public service. She has received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements and public service.

Sidney Poitier. Sidney Poitier is a groundbreaking actor, becoming the top black movie star in the 1950s and 1960s. Poitier is the first African American to be nominated and win a Best Actor Academy Award, receive an award at a top international film festival (Venice Film Festival), and be the top grossing movie star in the United States. Poitier insisted that the film crew on The Lost Man be at least 50 percent African American, and starred in the first mainstream movies portraying “acceptable” interracial marriages and interracial kissing. Poitier began his acting career without any training or experience by auditioning at the American Negro Theatre.

Chita Rivera. Chita Rivera is an accomplished and versatile actress, singer, and dancer, who has won Two Tony Awards and received seven more nominations while breaking barriers and inspiring a generation of women to follow in her footsteps. In 2002, she became the first Hispanic recipient of the coveted Kennedy Center Honor. Propelled to stardom by her electric performance as Anita in the original Broadway premiere of West Side Story, Rivera went on to star in additional landmark musicals such as Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, and Jerry’s Girls. She recently starred in The Dancer’s Life, an autobiographical musical about her celebrated life in the theatre.

Mary Robinson. Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland (1990 – 1997) and a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997 – 2002), a post that required her to end her presidency four months early. Robinson served as a prominent member of the Irish Senate prior to her election as President. She continues to bring attention to international issues as Honorary President of Oxfam International, and Chairs the Board of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI Alliance). Since 2002 she has been President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative, based in New York, which is an organization she founded to make human rights the compass which charts a course for globalization that is fair, just and benefits all.

Janet Davison Rowley. Janet Davison Rowley, M.D., is the Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics at The University of Chicago. She is an American human geneticist and the first scientist to identify a chromosomal translocation as the cause of leukemia and other cancers. Rowley is internationally renowned for her studies of chromosome abnormalities in human leukemia and lymphoma, which have led to dramatically improved survival rates for previously incurable cancers and the development of targeted therapies. In 1999 President Clinton awarded her the National Medal of Science—the nation’s highest scientific honor.

Desmond Tutu. Desmond Tutu is an Anglican Archbishop emeritus who was a leading anti-apartheid activist in South Africa. Widely regarded as “South Africa’s moral conscience,” he served as the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) from 1978 – 1985, where he led a formidable crusade in support of justice and racial reconciliation in South Africa. He received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work through SACC in 1984. Tutu was elected Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986, and the Chair of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995. He retired as Archbishop in 1996 and is currently Chair of The Elders.

Muhammad Yunus. Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a global leader in anti-poverty efforts, and has pioneered the use of “micro-loans” to provide credit to poor individuals without collateral. Dr. Yunus, an economist by training, founded the Grameen Bank in 1983 in his native Bangladesh to provide small, low-interest loans to the poor to help better their livelihood and communities. Despite its low interest rates and lending to poor individuals, Grameen Bank is sustainable and 98% percent of its loans are repaid – higher than other banking systems. It has spread its successful model throughout the world. Dr. Yunus received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work.

Elton John invites you to invest in artwork to support his AIDS Foundation.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation Photography Portfolio is a collection of ten signed and numbered prints by some of the world’s the most outstanding international names in contemporary photography. Sales of the Photography Portfolio support urgently needed grant-making initiatives supporting innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate AIDS-related discrimination and stigma, and direct care services.

“I am both thrilled by the extraordinary array of art that has been contributed to this collection and profoundly grateful to the generous and talented artists represented within for supporting EJAF’s vital work,” said Sir Elton.

Published by Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, the limited edition boxed Portfolio sells for $25,000 and constitutes an extraordinary set for collectors or collecting organizations. The prints, in an edition of 40, with 12 artist’s proofs, were produced under the supervision of the artists. The Portfolio will be presented in a 20 × 24 inch box designed by Li. Inc.

“The Portfolio is a way for us to connect with the visual arts world, which has always been at the forefront in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and it is proof that artists continue to care,” said Scott Campbell, Executive Director of the Foundation.

Elton John Dedicates Song To Michael Jackson At Charity Bash

Elton John held his 11th annual White Tie & Tiara Ball to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation on Thursday, June 25.

Held at his Windsor mansion, “Woodside”, the party featured entertainment by Justin Timberlake and attracted guests such as Sam Taylor Wood, Damien Hirst, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Beckinsale, Shirley Bassey, Lily Allen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Natalie Imbruglia, David Walliams, Geri Halliwell, Lily Cole and Erin O’Connor.

The annual ball has raised over £27 million since its inception, with last week’s event raising £4 million.

Sir Elton reportedly was told about the death of Michael Jackson during the evening, and dedicated a version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to the singer.

Formula 1 Stars Hit The Catwalk For Charity

Prior to the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, Formula One drivers took part in a fashion show at the Amber Fashion event to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

This is the second year in a row that Petra Ecclestone, daughter of Formula One Management CEO Bernie, has unveiled her F1 inspired men’s wear collection ‘FORM’ using the sports’ driver’s as models. Walking the catwalk for charity were Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Adrian Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Sebastian Vettel and F1 veteran David Coulthard.

One of last year’s participants, Mark Webber, commented: “Last year my knees were shaking a bit, but now it’s all routine! Could the catwalk be a career for me? No. So far I’ve never been a fashion junkie, but you never know – never say never!”

Jenson Button also returned to the catwalk for the second year in a row: “Whatever you might think, a modeling career was definitely never my ’plan B,” said this years Monaco Grand Prix winner. “I do this here because it is a fun event and it is for a good cause. Hopefully the guests will put their hands in their pockets and get some money out this evening. For us drivers it’s a nice break to do something different.”

The event included a charity auction presented by David Furnish, partner of Sir Elton John, and featured unique ‘money can’t buy’ items such as a ‘Mandarin Oriental Dellis Cay Luxury Experience,’ a unique print of soccer star Thierry Henry, an original hand-signed etching by Henri Matisse, and the ultimate item – dinner for ten with Sir Elton John at his house in Nice.

Guests in attendance included HSH Prince Albert of Monaco, Bernie Ecclestone, Sir Martin Sorrell, Sir Richard Branson, iconic sprinter Michael Johnson, Elizabeth Hurley and her husband Arun Nayar and many others.

Elton John Speaks At BIO Convention

Elton John has spoken out about AIDS research, praising the efforts of biotechnology leaders, but stating that more work is needed.

“Despite our many advances, and despite your laudable work, HIV/Aids is still winning,” the singer/songwriter told 3000 guests at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta. “It continues to devastate populations in the developing world. But the epidemic is also worse than we thought in this very city, and in this very country.”

Elton John established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 and has raised over $150 million to support AIDS prevention programs. He told guests at the BIO event that he has seen over 60 friends die from the disease.

“I should have done more,” he said. “I did not. I am ashamed.”

George Harrison Honored With Charity Mini

Former Beatle George Harrison is being honored by a new car that is to be sold to benefit charity.

The new one-of-a-kind Mini Cooper S will sport a psychedelic paint job based on the design of a car owned by the late singer and guitarist. Gifted to Harrison in 1966, the car featured in The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour. Now, for Mini’s 50th birthday, the automaker is commissioning a one-of-a-kind modern version of George’s psychedelic Cooper S.

The car will be auctioned later this year to benefit Harrison’s Material World Foundation, a charity the musician established to support a wide range of charities, such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, the Elton John AIDS Foundation and many more.

The Mini will be on display May 22-24 at Mini United, the Mini’s largest fan event, to be held at Silverstone raceway in the UK. The event will provide three days of nonstop entertainment for Mini enthusiasts and owners, with concerts, shows and car races.

Starring alongside Damon Whitaker and Danny Venegas, Raul Julia-Levy has played the leads of a positive role model in film.

In real life, Julia-Levy plays the role of a philanthropist, actor, producer and activist with a heart. He grew up in a prominent family in Mexico City and met his famous father for the first time in Hollywood when he was 17. Despite any life challenges he has faced, he has remained dedicated to his passions and his cause.

I had the opportunity of meeting of Raul and asking him a few questions on why philanthropy is so important to him.

What initially inspired you to get involved in charity and philanthropy?

I have always had a heart for others since I was 5 years old. My instincts as a human being began at that time and I had a heart for people and animals. I remember my grandfather asked me, “who is the most important person,” and I said HE is, of course, or my mother. He told me he would be back after I could think about it a while. When he returned I told him that “I” am the most important person, and he kissed me and said that is right.

Were you raised to think about others or was there an event in your life that caused you to direct your interests toward charity?

At 7 years my grandfather told me that I have too many shoes – don’t you know there are people that don’t have one pair? A maid worked in the house and her son had holes in his shoes – I gave him 3 pairs of my shoes.

What do you get out of helping others and being a part of such a cause?

It makes me feel important to others and to myself and that I accomplish something – contributing to something important.

Why would you recommend others to get involved?

The rewards of helping others should be spread around and giving something back to the world in a noble way – it is a unique experience for humanity.

What would you like to see change about the world?

Everything needs to change in the world – starting from the respect of wild life and mankind as well as the respect for the environment around the world.

What would you do to fix the issues?

In order to make significant changes we all need to start from our own house and teach others to do the same.

You are involved with a lot of charities. What are the ones you are most passionate about and why?

I support FlauntMyPet, The Humane Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hollywood Children’s Hospital, and the Senior Citizen Foundation because they are all dedicated to supporting mankind as well as animals and survival into the future. I also support the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Michael J. Fox Foundation, & The Lolita Campaign.

Why do you feel these are worthy causes or organizations?

Life is essential for the growth of our planet and I believe these causes support that.

I have heard of the other charities, but I am not familiar with Flaunt My Pet. Could you tell me more?

When my first dog, Randy, died when both of us were 13 years old, it was a very emotional time for me. I felt like I lost a part of my body. Until this day his presence is still very strong to me. As an adult, my dog O’Toole died in 2006 – I was devastated. After spending $3000 we could not save him because he had plastic attached to his intestine. This is how FlauntMyPet.com was born. The death of our dog O’Toole and the astronomical number of dogs killed in this country each year-4 million dogs a year.

Flauntmypet.com is a major social site that will launch in 2009 showcasing a long list of Hollywood Celebrities and their pets. It is currently in the process of becoming a 501c3 nonprofit status. You and your celebrity friends have also been a great support to the Lolita Campaign. Can you tell our readers about your purpose in the campaign?

We are all dedicated to relocating this wonderful whale back into her natural habitat. It is extremely important that we succeed in this cause because that will set the standard and prevent aquariums and facilities, that don’t meet Federal regulations, from displaying such animals in captivity under poor conditions. We believe that we will succeed 100% in the relocation of the whale.

What other projects are you working on?

Working with AnswersForElders.com, a social site for baby boomers who are taking care of their elderly parents. I am currently involved with an epic movie called Birdwoman of the Snake, a Native American story about Sacagawea, staring Ewan McGregor

If you had the opportunity to use your celebrity status to make changes for the better of the world, what would you do?

Raise awareness, educate people, provide unique information, invite people to get involved and take part of the change.

Who are some of your celebrity friends that really make a difference in the world today?

Johnny Depp, who is incredibly devoted to children and animals; Harrison Ford, Forest Whitaker, Jermaine Jackson, Halima Jackson, Jean Claude Van Dam, 50 Cent, Bob Barker, Elton John, Placido Domingo, Shari Watson aka: Truth Hurts, American Idol: Chikezie, Hayden Panettiere, Lindsay Lohan, Bokeem Woodbine, Wesley Snipes, Richard Grieco and many other A-list celebrities from Mexico City.

How do you think we can get more celebrities to get involved in positive change?

By being a good example and promoting good examples and good work. Showing celebrities that their voices are powerful enough to make things happen.

How do you think we can inspire more people to become involved in giving back?

Utilizing our most powerful tool – our voices through a clear message that is direct and inspirational.

How important is it for celebrities like yourself and your friends to use their voice?

It is extremely important for them to give back in any way, shape or form – part of our mission. We all have a purpose to give back.

Imagine the impact we would see if everyone in Hollywood would use his or her voice to make a positive impact in the world. Who knows, maybe philanthropy would become the industry standard and we could all flaunt our pet with a purpose.

Christina Milian To Headline Charity Event

Elton John Charity Oscar Party Attracts Big Stars

Elton John attracted more than a few big names to his annual charity Oscar party last night, February 22, with Victoria Beckham, Gordon Ramsay, Katie Price and Kate Beckinsale among the 650 guests.

The party is held every year to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization established and overseen by the singer that funds educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS, and for programs that provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS.

Last year’s party raised over $5 million for the charity, and this year is expected to have topped that, with a guest list that included Kiefer Sutherland, Sharon Stone, Elle Macpherson and Natasha Bedingfield.

“We give them the best that they can possibly afford,” said Sir Elton before the lavish party kicked off at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. “It’s beautiful inside the tent, the food’s great, everyone will be served the best wines, but they need to be because they’ve paid an awful lot of money for a seat.”

Tickets to the event reportedly sold for $3,500.

Athletic Champions Pose Naked For AIDS Awareness

Some of the world’s most beautiful sports stars participated in an amazing black and white nude portrait project by photographers Anderson and Low to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Venus Williams, Terrell Owens, Matt Dawson and Thierry Henry are just a few of the athletic champions who posed for Anderson & Low for the ‘Champions’ exhibit, now on display through March 8, 2009, at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The exhibit – which took several years to complete – was conceived by the photographers as a way to raise awareness of the global issue of HIV/AIDS.

“Transcending cultural and socioeconomic boundaries the universal appeal of these athletes made them the ideal subjects for this project,” reads the press release. “Their nudity in the portraits is symbolic, illustrating both their physical beauty and prowess alongside their vulnerability and humanity.”

Sir Elton Launches Crystal iPods For AIDS Foundation

Sir Elton John has launched a range of crystal adorned iPods to raise money for charity.

The 61-year-old star personally oversaw production of the 1000 iPods – to be retailed at £400 each – with proceeds to go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

“Elton does not usually put his name to a product but this is exactly he kind of thing he loves,” said a spokesperson for Sir Elton. “It’s extravagant and glamorous just like him. And, as everyone knows, his AIDS charity is very close to his heart.”

As well as being encrusted with crystals – and available in 10 colors – the iPods also have Sir Elton’s signature engraved by laser on the back.

Sir Elton will also be hosting his annual Oscars Viewing Party on February 22 at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles to raise money for his Foundation.

Penelope Cruz Gets Under The Mistletoe On World AIDS Day

Actress Penelope Cruz opened a special new initiative in New York’s Madison Square Park yesterday in recognition of World AIDS Day.

The Unbreakable Kiss Mistletoe Installation – sponsored by A Diamond Is Forever – will donate $5 to the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) for every couple that kisses under the mistletoe from now until December 4. And in addition, one lucky couple every day will win a piece of jewelry from A Diamond Is Forever.

“All of us at EJAF are deeply grateful to our dear friend Penelope Cruz for representing the Foundation at this important World AIDS Day observance and to A Diamond is Forever for choosing to support EJAF through this lovely and unique event,” said Founder and Chairman Sir Elton John. “Until we have a cure and a preventive vaccine, teaching people how to prevent HIV infection is one of the most important things we can do right now to bring an end to this terrible epidemic. Chris Evert Charity Tennis Event Attracts Celebrities

The 2008 Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic was held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, November 1-2nd, and once again proved to be a raging success – so much so, that tennis legend Chris Evert has now raised close to $20 million for charities!

The event kicked off with a Pro-Am at the Boca Raton Resort & Club tennis courts and attracted some new faces this year. Comedian Billy Crystal and 12-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres joined regulars such as Chevy Chase, Stone Phillips, Maeve Quinlan, Bud Collins, Vince Spadea, Alan Thicke, Jana Novotna, Gavin Rossdale, and Jon Lovitz.

Evert created the fundraising event to fight drug abuse and assist neglected and abused children in South Florida.

“What these treatment centers do is they get these women or men back into the mainstream of life, back on track, whether they’re gonna work, whether they want to go to school, whether they want to be great parents, whatever, it gets them back into mainstream of living,” says Evert. “Circumstances in life sometimes get you to a very low and a lot of people in the world, that’s how they reacted by turning to drugs and its not something that you should look down on and snub, it can happen to anybody.”

Chris Evert Charities partners with The Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida, a public -private partnership administered with the State of Florida, to raise money for needy programs which otherwise would not be fully-funded by the State. Elton John Hosts An Enduring Vision Gala In New York

Gladys Knight, Tim Allen, Whoopi Goldberg, Emily Mortimer and Delta Goodrem were just some of the stars spotted at Sir Elton John’s An Enduring Vision gala in New York on Tuesday, November 11.

“I hope we raise a lot of money and I hope people go away thinking about AIDS and the difficulties we have throughout the world with AIDS,” said Sir Elton during the seventh annual gala to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “I hope they also have a good time so that they come back next year. I mean, it’s great to go and give money but you can’t bat people over the head with things. But we’ve got it down quite well now, David [Furnish, Elton’s partner] and I. We’ve been doing this for so long that people seem to want to come back so that’s the secret of our success, I hope.”

The evening featured performances from Sir Elton – who was joined by Gladys Knight for a soulful version of What Are Friends For – as well as a cocktail reception, dinner, and live auction.

Tim Allen also received the Enduring Vision award for his support of the EJAF mission raise awareness and help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

“I’m doing my best to accept an award from the genuine article, and I just hope I can stick with being humble and not be a jerk, as is my natural reaction to be funny and try and laugh this off,” he said. “It’s a terrific thing that he’s [Sir Elton] done and I’m just doing the best I can.”

The event raised over $2 million for the EJAF.

“I’m so proud to be in this country,” said Sir Elton. “So proud to be a part of something so incredibly moving, and touching.”

Elton's AIDS Bash Attracts Stars

Sir Elton John threw a star-studded gala to raise money for his AIDS Foundations earlier this week – although the Rocket Man himself was unable to attend.

Sir Elton’s partner David Furnish had to take over the hosting duties at the Grey Goose Character and Cocktails party in London on Wednesday night, with proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

A host of celebs turned up for the glitzy bash, including Little Britain’s David Walliams, model Eva Herzigova, singer Lily Allen, Giles Deacon and Jenson Button.

“I’m having a great night,” said Furnish. “I can’t thank everyone enough for being so generous. After 15 years, I still get nervous before hosting an event like this but then I think of why we’re doing it in the first place and tell myself to get on with it.”

The evening – which included an auction – raised over £350,000 (US$567,000) for the charity.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Benefits AIDS Charities

Sir Elton John performed at a special concert celebrating the 35th anniversary of his classic album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in New York on Monday.

The concert benefited a number of AIDS charities, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and included the album being played in its entirity by a host of artists such as Jane Krakowski, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright and Jake Shears.

Sir Elton appeared on stage to perform the final three songs of the night – Roy Rogers, Social Disease, and Harmony.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was released in 1973 and went on to sell over 30 million copies around the world.

Team Elton John Wins Charity Tennis Event

Team Elton John has won the 16th annual Advanta WTT Smash Hits event and raised over $400,000 for charity.

Held at the Kennesaw State University on Sunday, October 12, the event was organized by John and tennis legend Billie Jean King to raise cash for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund.

Sir Elton – a huge sports fan – kicked off the tennis action in a Battle of the Sexes match with Andy Roddick against Anna Kournikova and Martina Navratilova, winning easily 3-1.

Over $171,000 of the event’s total was raised in a live auction held before the games, with top items including two Wimbledon packages with Billie Jean King’s personal Center Court seats – which sold for $21,000 each – as well as Elton John’s autographed piano bench and a Super Bowl package. Roddick surprised other bidders by successfully acquiring a $17,000 artwork made by Martina Navratilova and Slovak artist Juraj Kralik, created when Navratilova hit a paint-soaked tennis balls onto a blank canvas.

“All of the money raised here today will stay here in the Atlanta market and in Georgia,” said Sir Elton during a press conference. “Forty six percent of AIDS cases are now being reported in the South. We are distinctly aware of the problems here and the South will continue to be a priority for the foundation.”

Elton John AIDS Foundation Funds Needle Exchange

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is helping to fund community based needle exchange programs in an effort to reduce the spread of blood born diseases among intervenes users.

In the United States over 1 million people are living with HIV and AIDS. Fifty thousand new infections occur every year and nearly eight thousand of those are directly related to intervenes drug use, as well as is the spread of hepatitis B and C.

As part of the Program, volunteers set up stations around New York City to service intervenes users from a large van stocked with clean needles and supplies.

Director of Community Relations and New York Harm Reduction Educator, Troy Branch, says, “If you’re going to inject yourself, use clean needles. We’ll give you 50 new ones if you give us 50 old ones. It’s been extremely successful.”

“We know that providing sterile syringes will prevent HIV,” says another volunteer.

Besides the needle exchange, other services are also available from the van, such as hepatitis screening, vaccines, HIV testing and treatment programs.

Branch says, “If it wasn’t for services like ours, these people wouldn’t get any help at all.”

In a statement on the EJAF website, Elton John says, “I have lost many dear friends to this terrible disease. In the mid-1980s, I began channeling my grief into efforts to help raise money for the pioneering charitable organizations that formed during those dark, grim years to fund AIDS research and provide vital services to people with HIV/AIDS.”

Today, forty million people are infected with HIV; eight thousand die every day.

Sir Elton John's White Tie And Tiara Party Hits The Beach

Once a year Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish throw open the doors of their exquisite Berkshire home to a sparkling array of celebrities for their annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, and last night was no different as a staggering number of stars filed into the singer’s house for this year’s much-looked-forward-to event.

More than 600 guests turned up to the beach-themed party, each paying around US$6,000 for the dinner, auction, and concert. This year’s performance came from Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and attendees included Bill Clinton, Elle Macpherson, Denzel Washington, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Caine, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart, Mischa Barton, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Gordon Ramsay, Tracey Emin, Roger Federer, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Osbourne, and Jemima Khan.

Sir Elton decorated his lavish garden with palm trees and sand for the party, which raised money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Last year’s event raised over $12 million for the cause, and the White Tie and Tiara Balls have made over $50 million since 1998.

Life In The Fast Lane Gets Even Faster For Kimi Raikkonen

Ferrari’s Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen may be used to life in the fast lane, but things are going to get a whole lot faster thanks to a charity auction held late last week.

The driver paid $315,000 for a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Hollywood actress Sharon Stone at the Amber Fashion Show and Auction in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation on Friday night in Monaco.

The gala, held at the Meridien Beach Plaza Hotel, raised over $1.6 million for the charity, and was attended by a “who’s who” of the motor racing world. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Honda’s Jenson Button, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, and Renault’s Nelson Piquet were among drivers modelling a collection designed by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone’s daughter, and many of them looked like they will have a career in high fashion modelling after their racing days are over.

But it was the auction that raised most people’s eyebrows, with a number of high value items going under the hammer. As well as Stone’s Corvette – which only had 4 miles on the clock – billionaire Vijay Mallya, co-owner of the Force India Formula One team, paid $357,000 for a piano used by Elton John to write his “Songs from the West Coast” album in 2001. Mallya also donated a one-week cruise on his 95-metre “Indian Empress”, one of the largest privately-owned yachts in the world, with that going out the door for $592,000.
