One & Only Cape Town will raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and is supported by Lennox’s SING Campaign.

With the largest number of people living with HIV in the world, South Africa is the EJAF’s highest priority in its international funding.

Anthony Kiedis Attends Elton John's Charity Party

On March 7, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers – along with other Hollywood stars – joined the 18th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Party at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

The gala has always been the leading fund-raising event in Hollywood on Oscar night, and raises AIDS awareness with help of many adored and admired artists among whom at this year’s party appeared: Milla Jovovich, Heidi Klum, Miley Cyrus, Hayden Panettiere, Victoria Beckham, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Simon Cowell, Joaquin Phoenix, Jamie Foxx, Jason Mraz, Joe Zee to name a few.

After dinner and cocktail hour, Grace Jones’ predictably unpredictable performance added even more excitement and beauty to the event, which was produced by Virginia Fout of V Productions and designed with floral feeling by Antony Todd.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) was established in the United States in 1992 by Sir Elton John. The EJAF’s mission is to support innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, and direct care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS. It has raised over $175 million since inception in support of projects in 55 countries around the world, including significant funding dedicated to programs in their respective home countries.

Celebrity Guests Celebrate Oscars At Charity Parties

The stars were out for charity over the weekend to celebrate the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

The eighth annual Night Before gala hit Hollywood on Saturday night to raise money for the Motion Picture & Television Fund, an organization that supports people in the Southern California entertainment community with health and human services needs.

Among the stars to converge on the Beverly Hills Hotel for the event were George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Steven Spielberg, Robert Downey Jr and many more.

“The generosity of the film and television community never ceases to amaze and none more so than Hollywood’s great legacy of ‘caring for our own’ through support of the MPTF,” said Ken Scherer, CEO of the MPTF Foundation.

The stars were out again on Oscar night for the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party . The party is held every year to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization established and overseen by the singer that funds educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS, and for programs that provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS.

“We give them the best that they can possibly afford,” said Sir Elton. “It’s beautiful inside the tent, the food’s great, everyone will be served the best wines, but they need to be because they’ve paid an awful lot of money for a seat.”

Guests at this year’s event – held at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood – were treated to an auction and a live performance by Grace Jones. Elton John To Hold Annual Oscar Viewing Party For Charity

Elton John has announced that he will once again host an Oscar Viewing Party to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The party is held every year to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization established and overseen by the singer that funds educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS, and for programs that provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS.

The guest list never fails to be scattered with big names, with Kiefer Sutherland, Sharon Stone, Elle Macpherson, Victoria Beckham, Gordon Ramsay and many others attending past events. The event also invariably raises millions of dollars for AIDS research.

“Beginning with a modest dinner that raised $300,000 in 1993, EJAF’s Academy Awards Viewing Party has grown into a multimillion dollar annual benefit that has raised approximately $25 million to date for the foundation’s life-saving programs,” said EJAF Director Scott Campbell. “But these achievements only address a small portion of the enormous need that already exists and that is growing at the rate of 10 more people every minute. We have a huge task ahead of us, and we are deeply grateful to our supporters and friends around the world for joining us in this vital cause.”

Eva Longoria Launches Charity Chocolates With Elton John

Eva Longoria was in Century City, California, on Monday to announce a new charity initiative between Godiva and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Godiva has launched a special limited edition True Love Heart assortment of chocolates, as well as a Valentine’s Day Sweepstakes, to raise $200,000 for charity.

“I really love this new Limited Edition Valentine’s Day box that honors Godiva’s partnership with the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” said the Desperate Housewives star. “It reminds us that love and compassion should always go hand-in-hand. I will definitely be gifting this to some of my loved ones this year and encouraging others to share a gift that gives back to those in need.”

The winner of the sweepstakes will be flown to New York to be part of the Elton John AIDS Foundation An Enduring Vision event, where they will present Elton John with a $200,000 check on behalf of Godiva. Godiva will also donate $200,000 to the charity of the winner’s choice.

Elton John To Headline Star-Studded Charity Ball

Global superstar Sir Elton John has been announced as the headline act at an annual fundraising event for sick and disabled children.

The generous singer, famed for hits including Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind and Your Song, has agreed to donate his appearance and perform at the Caudwell Children ‘Butterfly Ball’ in May for free after learning about the work of the Charity.

The exclusive performance at London’s Battersea Evolution on May 20th 2010 will be in front of an impressive guest list of celebrities and charity supporters, including the charity ambassadors Elizabeth Hurley and Joan Collins, as well as a group of children the Charity has supported during their 10-year history.

Elton John held his annual Winter Ball to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation in London last night – and some very special guests helped out.

The event, held at the Grey Goose Hotel Du Palais at the Grosvenor in Mayfair, featured a performance by Kelly Rowland and three unique cocktail bars designed by couturier Roland Mouret, model Lily Cole and singer Lily Allen. Guests included Elizabeth Hurley, members of the Sugababes and The Saturdays, and Daniel Merriweather.

“The Foundation prides itself not only on producing beautiful events, but on ensuring that every penny they raise goes directly to our charitable work,” said Sir Elton and his partner, David Furnish. "This event is no exception, thanks to the generosity of Grey Goose. The Foundation is now one of the largest HIV/AIDS charities in the world, yet our overheads are amongst the smallest – currently 4.3%. Over the past year, we have committed to initiatives that change not only the way services are received in local projects but at a national or international level. These include working with the Clinton Foundation to expand and refine treatment services for over 20,000 children in Malawi, Lesotho, Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya, and with Mothers 2 Mothers in the same countries to stop HIV-positive pregnant women transferring the virus to their babies. In Ukraine, a national programme for children will change the way HIV–positive children are told about their illness and how they are treated in school and in society.

Andy Roddick And Elton John Help Each Other For Charity

Tennis star Andy Roddick held his yearly charity event for the Andy Roddick Foundation and this year he received a little help from good pal Sir Elton John.

During the event, Sir Elton offered a lucky bidder the opportunity to pick his set list for the evening, and winning songs included “Tiny Dancer” and “Crocodile Rock.”

Guests in attendance included Brooklyn Decker, John Legend and his gal Chrissy Teigen among others, and according to guests “Andy was the first to stand up for ovations after Elton’s songs, and the last person to sit down.”

Proceeds from the event were given to Roddick’s foundation, so it seems only fair that a few days later, Roddick in turn lent his support to Elton John for the WTT Smash Hits charity event in Baton Rouge.

The WTT Smash Hits event raised more than $640,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Baton Rouge area AIDS charity, thanks to the incredible line-up of tennis stars involved.

Guests enjoyed some hard hitting tennis action compliments of Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas, Billie Jean King, Anna Kournikova, Serena Williams and others, in an event that has raised more than $9.6 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and local charities throughout the U.S.

Captained by longtime friends Billie Jean King and Sir Elton John, the Smash Hits players formed two teams and faced off in a modified World TeamTennis match, but before the action, players took to the stage to raise more than $120,000 via a live auction.

Items sold included a pair of tennis lessons with Roddick for $12,000 each; Anna Kournikova and Serena Williams helped add $12,000 to the total by auctioning off a Super Bowl package to a room full of Saints fans; and the top auction item of the night was two Wimbledon packages featuring Billie Jean King’s personal Center Court tickets which went for $20,000 each.

Sting Tries On Elton John's Clothes For Charity

Yesterday, Look To The Stars brought you Elton John’s plans to sell his clothes at a charity store this weekend. We can also now reveal that some of his celebrity friends tried some of the clothes on this week to publicize the event.

Sting, Neve Campbell and Natalie Imbruglia were all spotted wearing Elton John's old threads in GQ Magazine to help raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

“Elton and David [Furnish] are dear friends of mine, and I have the utmost respect for them as people and as campaigners,” said Sting. “One of my favourite shots was with me wearing David’s jacket and a pair of Elton’s glasses. I looked a bit like Dame Edna Everage.”

The clothes will be sold at Covent Garden’s Flower Cellars on December 12.

Elton John To Sell Clothes At Charity Store

A selection of clothes straight from the closet of Elton John will be sold at Covent Garden’s Flower Cellars on December 12 to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The pop up store will include suits, belts, bags and sunglasses from leading labels such as Versace, Prada and Alexander McQueen, with some items donated by Sir Elton’s partner, David Furnish.

“Looking through these clothes brings back years of memories,” said Furnish. “They’re beautiful and have given me a lot of joy. But they’re very saleable, and we can raise a lot of money.”

The singer has sold his clothes at six pop up stores in the past, including the first in 1996 and the last in 2002.

“We always get a fantastic response — I think the idea that the items we all buy and enjoy can help someone in dire need, particularly at this time of year, really strikes a chord,” said Sir Elton.

Prices will range from £30 to £250 for shirts, £15 to £500 for jackets, £30 to £250 for shoes (size 8 and 8.5) and £150 to £750 for suits.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation is one of the world’s leading non-profit organisations funding programmes that help to alleviate the physical, emotional and financial hardship of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS. EJAF was formed primarily to look after the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United Kingdom; it is still the largest HIV/AIDS grant maker in the UK. However, during the past sixteen years, the organisation has also extended the scope of its work, now funding in 15 countries over 4 continents, it is one of the 20 largest international AIDS charities.

Elton John Warns Complacent Teens About Unsafe Sex

At a gala for his AIDS charity on November 16, Elton John said that young people are putting themselves in danger of getting HIV by engaging in unsafe sex. He warned that the latest generation is “complacent” about the risk of getting the virus.

He said that even though AIDS is not a new disease, higher rates of HIV infection are being seen in African American women, the rural south and in the gay community.

Speaking to Radio 1’s Newsbeat, the singer said, “We are finding that too many young people are not listening to what we are saying. I’m afraid people do get a little complacent about the disease by going out and having unsafe sex. It’s a cyclical thing. Every ten years a new generation comes along and you have to re-educate them.”

Also present at the event held for the Elton John AIDS Foundation were Sharon Stone, former United States president Bill Clinton and Daniel Craig.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation will honor Sharon Stone and Bill Clinton at a charity event this month.

The Enduring Vision Gala is an annual event that last year raised over $2 million for the organization. Sir Elton's event has attracted celebrities such as Gladys Knight, Tim Allen and Whoopi Goldberg in the past, and this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever.

Sir Elton set up his AIDS Foundation to provide funding for educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and/or the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and for programs that provide services to people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.

President Obama To Award Medals Of Freedom Today

President Obama has named 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

This year’s awardees were chosen for their work as agents of change. Among their many accomplishments in fields ranging from sports and art to science and medicine to politics and public policy, these men and women have changed the world for the better. They have blazed trails and broken down barriers. They have discovered new theories, launched new initiatives, and opened minds to new possibilities.

President Obama said, "These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. “Their relentless devotion to breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens sets a standard to which we all should strive. It is my great honor to award them the Medal of Freedom.”

President Obama will present the awards at a ceremony on Wednesday, August 12.

The following individuals will receive the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom:

Nancy Goodman Brinker. Nancy Goodman Brinker is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s leading breast cancer grass roots organization. Brinker established the organization in memory of her sister, who passed away from breast cancer in 1980. Through innovative events like Race for the Cure, the organization has given and invested over $1.3 billion for research, health services and education services since its founding in 1982 and developed a worldwide grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists who are working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find cures. Brinker has received several awards for her work, and has also served in government as U.S. Ambassador to Hungary (2001 – 2003), Chief of Protocol of the U.S. (2007 – 2009), and Chair of the President’s Cancer Panel (1990). In May, Nancy Goodman Brinker was named the first-ever World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control.

Pedro José Greer, Jr. Dr. Pedro Jose Greer is a physician and the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at the Florida International University School of Medicine, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society. Dr. Greer is the founder of Camillus Health Concern, an agency that provides medical care to over 10,000 homeless patients a year in the city of Miami. He is also the founder and medical director of the St. John Bosco Clinic which provides basic primary medical care to disadvantaged children and adults in the Little Havana community. He has been recognized by Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr, and Jimmy Carter for his work with Miami’s poor . He is also the recipient of three Papal Medals as well as the prestigious MacArthur “genius grant”. He currently has a joint private practice with his father, Pedro Greer, Sr.

Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking is an internationally-recognized theoretical physicist who has a severe physical disability due to motor neuron disease. He is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a post previously held by Isaac Newton in 1669. In addition to his pioneering academic research in mathematics and physics, Hawking has penned three popular science books, including the bestselling A Brief History of Time. Hawking, a British citizen, believes that non-academics should be able to access his work just as physicists are, and has also published a children’s science book with his daughter. His persistence and dedication has unlocked new pathways of discovery and inspired everyday citizens.

Jack Kemp. Jack Kemp, who passed away in May 2009, served as a U.S. Congressman (1971 – 1989), Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (1989 – 1993), and Republican Nominee for Vice President (1996). Prior to entering public service, Kemp was a professional football player (1957 – 1969) and led the Buffalo Bills to American Football League championships in 1964 and 1965. In Congress and as a Cabinet Secretary, Kemp was a self-described “bleeding heart conservative” who worked to encourage development in underserved urban communities. In the years leading up to his death, Kemp continued seeking new solutions, raising public attention about the challenge of poverty, and working across party lines to improve the lives of Americans and others around the world.

Sen. Edward Kennedy. Senator Edward M. Kennedy has served in the United States Senate for forty-six years, and has been one of the greatest lawmakers – and leaders – of our time. From reforming our public schools to strengthening civil rights laws and supporting working Americans, Senator Kennedy has dedicated his career to fighting for equal opportunity, fairness and justice for all Americans. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that every American has access to quality and affordable health care, and has succeeded in doing so for countless children, seniors, and Americans with disabilities. He has called health care reform the “cause of his life,” and has championed nearly every health care bill enacted by Congress over the course of the last five decades. Known as the “Lion of the Senate,” Senator Kennedy is widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his commitment to progress and his ability to legislate.

Billie Jean King. Billie Jean King was an acclaimed professional tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s, and has helped champion gender equality issues not only in sports, but in all areas of public life. King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, then the most viewed tennis match in history. King became one of the first openly lesbian major sports figures in America when she came out in 1981. Following her professional tennis career, King became the first woman commissioner in professional sports when she co-founded and led the World Team Tennis (WTT) League. The U.S. Tennis Association named the National Tennis Center, where the US Open is played, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2006. She was a Founding Board Member of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Rev. Joseph Lowery. Reverend Lowery has been a leader in the U.S. civil rights movement since the early 1950s. It was in Mobile, Alabama, at this time –that he headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association; the organization which led the Movement to desegregate buses and public accommodations. Rev. Lowery later co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a leading civil rights organization, with Dr. Martin Luther King, and was chosen by Dr. King to Chair the Delegation delivering the demands of the Selma-to-Montgomery March to Alabama Governor George Wallace.. Rev. Lowery is a minister in the United Methodist Church, and has continued to highlight important civil rights issues in the U.S. and worldwide, including apartheid in South Africa, since the 1960s.

Joe Medicine Crow – High Bird. Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, the last living Plains Indian war chief, is the author of seminal works in Native American history and culture. He is the last person alive to have received direct oral testimony from a participant in the Battle of the Little Bighorn: his grandfather was a scout for General George Armstrong Custer. A veteran of World War II, Medicine Crow accomplished during the war all of the four tasks required to become a “war chief,” including stealing fifty Nazi SS horses from a German camp. Medicine Crow was the first member of his tribe to attend college, receiving his master’s degree in anthropology in 1939, and continues to lecture at universities and notable institutions like the United Nations. His contributions to the preservation of the culture and history of the First Americans are matched only by his importance as a role model to young Native Americans across the country.

Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official from a major city in the United States when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk encouraged lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens to live their lives openly and believed coming out was the only way they could change society and achieve social equality. Milk, alongside San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, was shot and killed in 1978 by Dan White, a former city supervisor. Milk is revered nationally and globally as a pioneer of the LGBT civil rights movement for his exceptional leadership and dedication to equal rights.

Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor was the first woman ever to sit on the United States Supreme Court. Nominated by President Reagan in 1981, she served until her retirement in 2006. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, O’Connor served as a state trial and appellate judge in Arizona. She was also as a member of the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman in the United States ever to lead a state senate as Senate Majority Leader. At a time when women rarely entered the legal profession, O’Connor graduated Stanford Law School third in her class, where she served on the Stanford Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Since retiring from the Supreme Court in 2006, O’Connor has served as Chancellor of the College of William and Mary, on the Board of Trustees of the National Constitution Center, and participated in the Iraq Study Group in 2006, as well as giving numerous lectures on public service. She has received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements and public service.

Sidney Poitier. Sidney Poitier is a groundbreaking actor, becoming the top black movie star in the 1950s and 1960s. Poitier is the first African American to be nominated and win a Best Actor Academy Award, receive an award at a top international film festival (Venice Film Festival), and be the top grossing movie star in the United States. Poitier insisted that the film crew on The Lost Man be at least 50 percent African American, and starred in the first mainstream movies portraying “acceptable” interracial marriages and interracial kissing. Poitier began his acting career without any training or experience by auditioning at the American Negro Theatre.

Chita Rivera. Chita Rivera is an accomplished and versatile actress, singer, and dancer, who has won Two Tony Awards and received seven more nominations while breaking barriers and inspiring a generation of women to follow in her footsteps. In 2002, she became the first Hispanic recipient of the coveted Kennedy Center Honor. Propelled to stardom by her electric performance as Anita in the original Broadway premiere of West Side Story, Rivera went on to star in additional landmark musicals such as Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, and Jerry’s Girls. She recently starred in The Dancer’s Life, an autobiographical musical about her celebrated life in the theatre.

Mary Robinson. Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland (1990 – 1997) and a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997 – 2002), a post that required her to end her presidency four months early. Robinson served as a prominent member of the Irish Senate prior to her election as President. She continues to bring attention to international issues as Honorary President of Oxfam International, and Chairs the Board of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI Alliance). Since 2002 she has been President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative, based in New York, which is an organization she founded to make human rights the compass which charts a course for globalization that is fair, just and benefits all.

Janet Davison Rowley. Janet Davison Rowley, M.D., is the Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics at The University of Chicago. She is an American human geneticist and the first scientist to identify a chromosomal translocation as the cause of leukemia and other cancers. Rowley is internationally renowned for her studies of chromosome abnormalities in human leukemia and lymphoma, which have led to dramatically improved survival rates for previously incurable cancers and the development of targeted therapies. In 1999 President Clinton awarded her the National Medal of Science—the nation’s highest scientific honor.

Desmond Tutu. Desmond Tutu is an Anglican Archbishop emeritus who was a leading anti-apartheid activist in South Africa. Widely regarded as “South Africa’s moral conscience,” he served as the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) from 1978 – 1985, where he led a formidable crusade in support of justice and racial reconciliation in South Africa. He received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work through SACC in 1984. Tutu was elected Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986, and the Chair of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995. He retired as Archbishop in 1996 and is currently Chair of The Elders.

Muhammad Yunus. Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a global leader in anti-poverty efforts, and has pioneered the use of “micro-loans” to provide credit to poor individuals without collateral. Dr. Yunus, an economist by training, founded the Grameen Bank in 1983 in his native Bangladesh to provide small, low-interest loans to the poor to help better their livelihood and communities. Despite its low interest rates and lending to poor individuals, Grameen Bank is sustainable and 98% percent of its loans are repaid – higher than other banking systems. It has spread its successful model throughout the world. Dr. Yunus received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation Photography Portfolio is a collection of ten signed and numbered prints by some of the world’s the most outstanding international names in contemporary photography. Sales of the Photography Portfolio support urgently needed grant-making initiatives supporting innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate AIDS-related discrimination and stigma, and direct care services.

Elton John held his 11th annual White Tie & Tiara Ball to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation on Thursday, June 25.

Held at his Windsor mansion, “Woodside”, the party featured entertainment by Justin Timberlake and attracted guests such as Sam Taylor Wood, Damien Hirst, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Beckinsale, Shirley Bassey, Lily Allen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Natalie Imbruglia, David Walliams, Geri Halliwell, Lily Cole and Erin O'Connor.

The annual ball has raised over £27 million since its inception, with last week’s event raising £4 million.

Sir Elton reportedly was told about the death of Michael Jackson during the evening, and dedicated a version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to the singer.

Formula 1 Stars Hit The Catwalk For Charity

Prior to the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, Formula One drivers took part in a fashion show at the Amber Fashion event to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

This is the second year in a row that Petra Ecclestone, daughter of Formula One Management CEO Bernie, has unveiled her F1 inspired men’s wear collection ‘FORM’ using the sports’ driver’s as models. Walking the catwalk for charity were Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Adrian Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Sebastian Vettel and F1 veteran David Coulthard.

One of last year’s participants, Mark Webber, commented: “Last year my knees were shaking a bit, but now it’s all routine! Could the catwalk be a career for me? No. So far I’ve never been a fashion junkie, but you never know – never say never!”

Jenson Button also returned to the catwalk for the second year in a row: “Whatever you might think, a modeling career was definitely never my ’plan B,” said this years Monaco Grand Prix winner. “I do this here because it is a fun event and it is for a good cause. Hopefully the guests will put their hands in their pockets and get some money out this evening. For us drivers it’s a nice break to do something different.”

The event included a charity auction presented by David Furnish, partner of Sir Elton John, and featured unique ‘money can’t buy’ items such as a ‘Mandarin Oriental Dellis Cay Luxury Experience,’ a unique print of soccer star Thierry Henry, an original hand-signed etching by Henri Matisse, and the ultimate item – dinner for ten with Sir Elton John at his house in Nice.

Elton John Speaks At BIO Convention

Elton John has spoken out about AIDS research, praising the efforts of biotechnology leaders, but stating that more work is needed.

“Despite our many advances, and despite your laudable work, HIV/Aids is still winning,” the singer/songwriter told 3000 guests at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta. “It continues to devastate populations in the developing world. But the epidemic is also worse than we thought in this very city, and in this very country.”

Elton John established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 and has raised over $150 million to support AIDS prevention programs. He told guests at the BIO event that he has seen over 60 friends die from the disease.

“I should have done more,” he said. “I did not. I am ashamed.”

George Harrison Honored With Charity Mini

Former Beatle George Harrison is being honored by a new car that is to be sold to benefit charity.

The new one-of-a-kind Mini Cooper S will sport a psychedelic paint job based on the design of a car owned by the late singer and guitarist. Gifted to Harrison in 1966, the car featured in The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour. Now, for Mini’s 50th birthday, the automaker is commissioning a one-of-a-kind modern version of George’s psychedelic Cooper S.

The car will be auctioned later this year to benefit Harrison’s Material World Foundation, a charity the musician established to support a wide range of charities, such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, the Elton John AIDS Foundation and many more.

The Mini will be on display May 22-24 at Mini United, the Mini’s largest fan event, to be held at Silverstone raceway in the UK. The event will provide three days of nonstop entertainment for Mini enthusiasts and owners, with concerts, shows and car races.

Starring alongside Damon Whitaker and Danny Venegas, Raul Julia-Levy has played the leads of a positive role model in film.

In real life, Julia-Levy plays the role of a philanthropist, actor, producer and activist with a heart. He grew up in a prominent family in Mexico City and met his famous father for the first time in Hollywood when he was 17. Despite any life challenges he has faced, he has remained dedicated to his passions and his cause.

I had the opportunity of meeting of Raul and asking him a few questions on why philanthropy is so important to him.

What initially inspired you to get involved in charity and philanthropy?

I have always had a heart for others since I was 5 years old. My instincts as a human being began at that time and I had a heart for people and animals. I remember my grandfather asked me, “who is the most important person,” and I said HE is, of course, or my mother. He told me he would be back after I could think about it a while. When he returned I told him that “I” am the most important person, and he kissed me and said that is right.

Were you raised to think about others or was there an event in your life that caused you to direct your interests toward charity?

At 7 years my grandfather told me that I have too many shoes – don’t you know there are people that don’t have one pair? A maid worked in the house and her son had holes in his shoes – I gave him 3 pairs of my shoes.

What do you get out of helping others and being a part of such a cause?

It makes me feel important to others and to myself and that I accomplish something – contributing to something important.

Why would you recommend others to get involved?

The rewards of helping others should be spread around and giving something back to the world in a noble way – it is a unique experience for humanity.

What would you like to see change about the world?

Everything needs to change in the world – starting from the respect of wild life and mankind as well as the respect for the environment around the world.

What would you do to fix the issues?

In order to make significant changes we all need to start from our own house and teach others to do the same.

You are involved with a lot of charities. What are the ones you are most passionate about and why?

I support FlauntMyPet, The Humane Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hollywood Children’s Hospital, and the Senior Citizen Foundation because they are all dedicated to supporting mankind as well as animals and survival into the future. I also support the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Michael J. Fox Foundation, & The Lolita Campaign.

Why do you feel these are worthy causes or organizations?

Life is essential for the growth of our planet and I believe these causes support that.

I have heard of the other charities, but I am not familiar with Flaunt My Pet. Could you tell me more?

When my first dog, Randy, died when both of us were 13 years old, it was a very emotional time for me. I felt like I lost a part of my body. Until this day his presence is still very strong to me. As an adult, my dog O’Toole died in 2006 – I was devastated. After spending $3000 we could not save him because he had plastic attached to his intestine. This is how FlauntMyPet.com was born. The death of our dog O’Toole and the astronomical number of dogs killed in this country each year-4 million dogs a year.

Flauntmypet.com is a major social site that will launch in 2009 showcasing a long list of Hollywood Celebrities and their pets. It is currently in the process of becoming a 501c3 nonprofit status. You and your celebrity friends have also been a great support to the Lolita Campaign. Can you tell our readers about your purpose in the campaign?

We are all dedicated to relocating this wonderful whale back into her natural habitat. It is extremely important that we succeed in this cause because that will set the standard and prevent aquariums and facilities, that don’t meet Federal regulations, from displaying such animals in captivity under poor conditions. We believe that we will succeed 100% in the relocation of the whale.

What other projects are you working on?

Working with AnswersForElders.com, a social site for baby boomers who are taking care of their elderly parents. I am currently involved with an epic movie called Birdwoman of the Snake, a Native American story about Sacagawea, staring Ewan McGregor

If you had the opportunity to use your celebrity status to make changes for the better of the world, what would you do?

Raise awareness, educate people, provide unique information, invite people to get involved and take part of the change.

Who are some of your celebrity friends that really make a difference in the world today?

Johnny Depp, who is incredibly devoted to children and animals; Harrison Ford, Forest Whitaker, Jermaine Jackson, Halima Jackson, Jean Claude Van Dam, 50 Cent, Bob Barker, Elton John, Placido Domingo, Shari Watson aka: Truth Hurts, American Idol: Chikezie, Hayden Panettiere, Lindsay Lohan, Bokeem Woodbine, Wesley Snipes, Richard Grieco and many other A-list celebrities from Mexico City.

How do you think we can get more celebrities to get involved in positive change?

By being a good example and promoting good examples and good work. Showing celebrities that their voices are powerful enough to make things happen.

How do you think we can inspire more people to become involved in giving back?

Utilizing our most powerful tool – our voices through a clear message that is direct and inspirational.

How important is it for celebrities like yourself and your friends to use their voice?

It is extremely important for them to give back in any way, shape or form – part of our mission. We all have a purpose to give back.

Imagine the impact we would see if everyone in Hollywood would use his or her voice to make a positive impact in the world. Who knows, maybe philanthropy would become the industry standard and we could all flaunt our pet with a purpose.

Christina Milian To Headline Charity Event

Milian’s latest efforts to support youth education reflect her dedication to making a difference in improving the lives of others. Often recognized as a role model to teens, she has worked with the Children Uniting Nations charity as a big sister to foster children and was recognized with a humanitarian award at The Reign music awards from the Elton John AIDS Foundation for her work as a role model to young children. She has also started to write two books targeted toward teenage girls that exemplify healthy ways of finding happiness.

Born to Cuban parents, Christina Milian is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter, dancer, and actress. Her first professional musical appearance performing vocals with rapper Ja Rule on the song “Between Me and You” peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also co-wrote and performed backing vocals for Jennifer Lopez’s album “J.Lo” in the “Play” track. She released her first album in 2004, which included the single “Dip It Low,” that became Milian’s biggest hit to date, reaching number two in the UK and number five in the U.S. and also earned her a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Rap/Song collaboration.” Her non-musical projects include starring roles in films such as Be Cool with John Travolta and Uma Thurman, and she also recorded two songs for its soundtrack.

The Palomita Education Fund was founded in 2007 by Molly Robbins, a successful entrepreneur and Mexico City native. It is a non-profit organization that encourages and supports education, professional and leadership development in the Latino community. The objectives of the organization are: to provide scholarships to Latinos planning to enroll in college, encourage participation of the Latino community in higher education, and professional growth and promote a productive and high-quality life.

Elton John Charity Oscar Party Attracts Big Stars

Elton John attracted more than a few big names to his annual charity Oscar party last night, February 22, with Victoria Beckham, Gordon Ramsay, Katie Price and Kate Beckinsale among the 650 guests.

Last year’s party raised over $5 million for the charity, and this year is expected to have topped that, with a guest list that included Kiefer Sutherland, Sharon Stone, Elle Macpherson and Natasha Bedingfield.

“We give them the best that they can possibly afford,” said Sir Elton before the lavish party kicked off at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. “It’s beautiful inside the tent, the food’s great, everyone will be served the best wines, but they need to be because they’ve paid an awful lot of money for a seat.”

Tickets to the event reportedly sold for $3,500.
