Hollywood Heroes To Be Honored By Prevention

Laura Petasnick, Publisher of Prevention, has announced the honorees of the magazine’s second annual “Prevention Honors Hollywood Heroes,” an evening in celebration of remarkable women committed to making a world of difference.

The event, to be held at the Sunset Tower Hotel on June 21, 2011, will honor Emmy and Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth on behalf of Maddie’s Corner, Emmy Award-winner and Golden Globe nominee Marg Helgenberger on behalf of The Race to Erase MS, Holly Robinson-Peete on behalf of The HollyRod Foundation and the late Laura Ziskin on behalf of Stand Up To Cancer, for their remarkable commitment to philanthropic causes. Asics will once again team with Prevention as the evening’s presenting sponsor.

Founded by actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth, Maddie’s Corner celebrates the bond between people and their pets while lending a helping paw to those in need. Its their mission to bring attention and support to animals in need – more specifically, homeless animals in shelters/rescue – and groups working on their behalf, as well as to highlight the many ways animals help people in need and enrich our lives. It hopes to increase awareness about responsible pet ownership and the joys of including animals in our lives, to educate about and to inspire humane attitudes toward animals, and to provide resources to those groups working directly with animals in need as well as those working with animals to assist people in need. In addition, we will periodically initiate activities benefiting human causes that will include the participation of animals to convey our message. The hallmark of Maddie’s Corner is that animals, whether as the message or the messengers, will always be active participants in our activities.

Joining ABC, CBS and NBC, FOX will donate one hour of live simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised September 10th fundraising special, to be broadcast from Los Angeles.

Additionally, VH1, HBO Latino, TV One and G4 have agreed to air the SU2C event. They join HBO, Discovery Health, E!, MLB Network and The Style Network for an historic evening to raise much-needed funds for groundbreaking cancer research.

“Cancer claims one person every minute of every day in the United States – 1500 people every single day. We’re delighted that the entertainment community is banding together in such a big way to help us get that word out,” said Laura Ziskin, who will produce the September 10th broadcast. Ziskin is a cancer survivor. Her film credits include the Spider-Man trilogy, As Good As It Gets, and Pretty Woman; she also produced the 74th and 79th Annual Academy Awards.

Stand Up To Cancer To Return With Second Celebrity Charity Telecast

Two years after an historic fundraising telecast and the start of a groundbreaking grassroots movement, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) will return to primetime television on September 10, 2010, at 8PM EST & PST / 7PM CT, with a star-studded appeal to build continuing public support and donations for cutting-edge cancer research that translates at a rapid pace from the laboratory to treatments and technologies that benefit patients.

Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams announced the upcoming show during individual live appearances on CBS’s “The Early Show,” ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “TODAY” show, respectively. The three network evening news anchors — who will host the September 10th telecast, executive produced by Laura Ziskin — participated in an interview together last week, discussing the upcoming fundraising event as well as the encouraging progress of “Dream Teams” of researchers SU2C has funded to date. Portions of that interview, the first joint appearance by this group of anchors, also aired on the morning shows.

Charlize Theron Blogs For Change In South Africa

Charlize Theron has blogged in the Huffington Post about the possibility of change in South Africa.

“The first time I ever visited the Umkhanyakude district in South Africa was to celebrate the launch of the initial Mpilonhle mobile health unit, which my charity — the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project — helped to fund,” wrote the UN Messenger of Peace. "Mpilonhle is an organization that provides innovative health and education programs to this rural district’s schools and communities. Run by Dr. Michael Bennish, Mpilonhle uses mobile health units to treat individuals’ medical, psychological, and sociological needs. This care would not otherwise be available in these areas due to the extreme level of poverty.

“The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project develops awareness, generates supporting funds, and participates in the enhancement of Mpilonhle’s medical units and mobile computer labs. The beauty of the units is that they bring resources to communities that have no means of transportation and are miles away from health services. Mpilonhle’s computer labs provide basic computer literacy to students and community members. Through the work CTAOP and Mpilonhle are doing together, many local individuals, especially children, are seeing doctors and experiencing technology for the very first time.”

Jim Parsons Makes A Big Bang For Charity

Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons has launched a special video for Stand Up To Cancer.

The Up2 You + Me Video was directed by Jesse Selwyn with the song written and performed by Zach Selwyn. The new humorous call to action video captures Parsons at his comedic best playing 30 characters, requiring 30 costume changes, which were all in keeping with the funny song lyrics. People will also be able to see the video on StandUp2Cancer.org.

“In writing the song, we wanted to communicate a serious and important message in a fun and light-hearted way,” said songwriter Zach Selwyn. “It was a thrill to work with Jim who weathered through 30 costume changes in a 12 hour day and never lost his spirit. We hope our fellow gamers will be inspired to join SU2C in the fight against cancer.”

Katie Couric, Julianne Moore, Julianna Margulies Talk Charity

Ladies Home Journal has profiled 3 celebrity women who work hard for charity – Katie Couric, Julianne Moore and Julianna Margulies.

Katie Couric is a co-founder of the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, and is also involved with Stand Up To Cancer.

“It would be criminal not to take advantage of these professional gifts I’ve been given,” she tells the magazine. "I have a bully pulpit from which to communicate a message and educate people. Helping to raise awareness and research dollars is my way of putting my fingerprint on the world in a positive way.
