The Killers Release Annual Christmas Charity Single

Bono Pays Tribute To Steve Jobs

Bono has paid tribute to Apple founder Steve Jobs, who passed away last week, praising his innovative support for the U2 singer’s (RED) initiative.

Jobs led Apple into its partnership with (RED) in 2006 and that partnership has helped to save the lives of millions of people with HIV in Africa.

“What made Steve Jobs truly great is that he was only interested in doing truly great things. He was bored by an easy ride or easy profit,” said Bono. "In a world littered with dull objects, he brought the beauty of clean lines and clear thought. This rhyme of intellect and intuition could be applied to a wide range of subjects from the US education system, to sculpture, to the fight against HIV/AIDS where his support of (RED) literally transformed the lives of two million people in Africa.

Yusuf Islam Uses Fan Voices For Peace

Yusuf Islam has released a new peace anthem using the voices of hundreds of fans from across the world.

Yusuf – formerly known as Cat Stevens – invited people to send samples of them singing parts of his new song, My People, and the results have been put together for the final product.

Talking to Spinner.com, Yusuf says that the song was inspired by an Egyptian peace protest: “Most of the things in my career have happened spontaneously, and this is just another one of those things. I had no big plans, but as we were all watching what as going on in Egypt there was this fantastic feeling of support and so we wanted to stretch out a hand to these people who were peacefully asking for change. I was on the guitar and then suddenly this song came out and ‘My People’ had arrived. The mood was simply one of intense admiration for the people who were standing up peacefully.”

Bono Lights Sydney Red For World AIDS Day

Bono is in Australia for World AIDS Day on December 1, and has praised the country’s leaders for helping fight HIV globally during the current economic recession.

“Times are hard in the Western world,” he said. "[Health agencies are] fighting hard for funding. In recessionary times, people have to tell their politicians this is important to them.

“Some people think that the pandemic is on its way out and it’s job done… It is really not so.”

Elton John To Edit Newspaper For Charity

Elton John will step into slightly different shoes on World AIDS Day, December 1, when he guest-edits UK newspaper The Independent.

All proceeds from the paper that day will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The Killers To Return With Charity Christmas Single

Bono Talks Charity With Russian President

U2’s Bono sat down for a cup of tea and a chat with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday to discuss charity.

The president hosted the rocker at his house near the Black Sea resort of Sochi to talk about HIV/AIDS, poverty and Africa.

“You are doing important things, because taking care of people is not only a job for politicians,” Medvedev said. “The charity work that you and your colleagues do has brought you respect all over the world.”

Sting And Bobby Sager Help Charity At FIFA World Cup

On 8 June 2010, just three days before the 2010 World Cup began in South Africa, an international partnership made a compelling case for soccer as an agent of social change. International philanthropist and entrepreneur Bobby Sager and his friend Sting rolled out their newest project, Hope is a Game-Changer, which will commence delivery of 10,000 indestructible soccer balls to six countries in Africa combined with the start of Grassroot Soccer’s (GRS) campaign to reach 1 million youth by the start of the World Cup in 2014.

Fittingly, the event was also a graduation celebration for 110 at-risk girls who have completed the GRS Skillz Street curriculum and held at the Football for Hope Centre, Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Ethan Zohn, the American soccer commentator, Survivor winner and co-founder of GRS who has very recently won a battle with Hodgkins disease, also attended the celebration.

In 2009, Sager joined forces with Sting and inventors Tim Jahnigen and Kevin McCarthy to help develop a soccer ball that can withstand anything. Sting and Sager started Hope Is A Game-Changer, funded in part through proceeds from Sager’s book “The Power of the Invisible Sun”, to deliver these balls to children in some of the toughest locations around the world. The ball itself is a symbol of hope – it’s impervious to wear, UV, water chemicals and puncture. According to Sager, “Hope is the most important thing that people need to move forward. The slightest ray of hope can ignite the human spirit’s ability to overcome: the power of the invisible sun.” But this project is not about charity. In line with Sager’s philosophy that there are no handouts, every child needs to earn a ball so Hope is a Game-Changer partners with organizations like GRS which teach life skills and develop team dynamics. Kirk Friedrich, MD and co-founder of GRS commented that “Grassroot Soccer is thrilled to partner with Hope is a Game-Changer to protect and improve the lives of young people around the world. Both organizations focus on developing and implementing innovative strategies to use sport as a tool for social change.”

Dennis Hopper's Charity Legacy

Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper passed away on Saturday, May 29, leaving behind a legacy seldom matched by actors.

After starting out in films such as Rebel Without a Cause and the classic Easy Rider, Hopper went on to gain two Golden Globe and two Academy Award nominations in his career and won the hearts of film critics for his intense and gritty performances.

And although he enjoyed a level of anonymity in his charity work, Hopper was often spotted lending his support to causes he believed in. Charities he supported included Bono’s (RED), for which he attended the massive Valentine’s Day charity art auction in 2008. He played poker for a variety of causes – including the Center For American Progress – and was a regular at amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS events in Cannes. It was at Cannes that he was honored by the Maybach Foundation for his charity work.

Bono Leads Celebrity PSA For (RED) Charity

(RED) has announced the launch of The Lazarus Effect Campaign, a multi-platform campaign across TV, online and print, including an HBO documentary airing on May 24, that will help raise awareness of the transformative effect of antiretroviral medicine for those living with HIV in Africa.

Launching April 29 on HBO, the awareness campaign will roll out across various TV and online networks in the coming weeks. The campaign equates the relative value of 40 cents by comparing trivial items worth 40 cents e.g. a stick of gum, a smear of lipstick — to the value of one day’s worth of life transforming antiretroviral medication.

Starbucks Teams With Bono's (RED) For Charity

Lady Gaga Helps Bono Fight AIDS In Africa

Lady Gaga is set to launch a new line of headphones, and proceeds will help in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

On Thursday, January 7, she joined Dr. Dre at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Lady Gaga is working with Product RED, and the idea was thought of after a conversation she had with Bono at the Vevo launch party back in December.

She said, “All the money that RED will make off these headphones will go directly to helping people who are affected by the AIDS epidemic in Africa.”

Didier Drogba Talks Charity

On the eve of World AIDS Day, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba turned RED as he teamed up with U2 front man Bono and Nike to launch the ’Lace Up. Save Lives" initiative to fight HIV and AIDS.

With Drogba on board, Nike announced it’s partnership with (RED) and is selling special red laces under the banner “Lace Up. Save Lives,” with the proceeds to be split equally between the Global Fund and soccer-based community programs aimed at educating people about AIDS.

“It was important to me to be involved in the Red campaign because I’m from Africa,” Ivory Coast international Drogba told a news conference in London. “It’s a big honor and pleasure for me to be linked with Bono and try to help him save some lives. AIDS and HIV is something that really destroyed Africa, and people don’t really realize how easy it is to save lives — only two pills a day, which is 40 cents.”

Happy Birthday Guadalupe is the fourth Christmas single the band has released for Bono’s (RED) charity, and all proceeds from the song will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

Wyclef Jean And Bono Receive ‘Ripple Of Hope Award’

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer Wyclef Jean, and (RED) founder/U2 front man Bono, were honored this week at a ceremony thrown by The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, where each were awarded the ‘Ripple of Hope’ Award.

Bono And Friends Rock Carnegie Hall For Charity

U2’s Bono and The Edge led an assortment of stars – including Courtney Love, Lou Reed, Scarlett Johansson, Rufus Wainwright and Lady GaGa at the massive (RED)NIGHTS charity concert in New York on Sunday, October 4.

Held at Carnegie Hall, the concert will benefit Bono’s (RED) charity to eliminate AIDS in Africa, and follows the successful (RED)NIGHTS concerts that were held earlier this year, featuring Katy Perry, Fall Out Boy, The Veronicas and many others.

The musicians reportedly took part in some massive jam sessions during the concert, playing David Bowie’s Jean Genie and The Velvet Underground’s ‘Sweet Jane’.

U2 To Turn The Night RED For Charity

The concert follows the successful (RED)NIGHTS concerts that were held earlier this year, featuring Katy Perry, Fall Out Boy, The Veronicas and many others.

The concert will take place at New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall and, as with all (RED)NIGHTS shows, a portion of the proceeds from the concert goes directly to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.
