For 25 years, Creative Alternatives of New York (CANY) has been offering transformative theater programs to traumatized children and adults in the New York Metropolitan area, helping them to build new life skills and realize their potential for healing and change through the art of drama. Working in partnership with leading social service organizations and health care institutions, CANY provides approximately 1,400 therapeutic theater groups annually in residential centers for children, special schools, psychiatric care facilities, domestic violence safe shelters, veterans hospital and community centers. The CANY method, developed over more than two decades, combines the discipline of the theater arts with group dynamics to promote resilience as a framework for the development of social and emotional health, helping New York’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised connect with their own creative potential for change and build new life goals.
