An open letter to UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, has been signed by a host of politicians, primatologists, scientists, academics, wildlife experts and celebrities. The letter calls on the UK Government to dissociate itself from the cruel trade in wild-caught primates for research.

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) has announced the start of an online auction to further the mission of renowned primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, UN Messenger of Peace.

Local members of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots environmental and humanitarian youth program joined members of the Skirball Cultural Center, USC Anthropology Department, Urban Arts Crew, TreePeople and the Ocean Institute, as well as students and members of the general public to celebrate the annual 2010 International Day of Peace on Sunday, September 19, in Los Angeles.

The event, which took place on the Santa Monica Pier, attracted more than 10,000 people who gathered to promote peace while enjoying arts and crafts, games, and exhibits featuring eco-friendly organizations and local nonprofits.

The United Nations Foundation will premiere today “A New Picture of Health,” a groundbreaking documentary about the work of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and its ongoing impact in saving millions of lives – particularly those of women and children – across the developing world.

“In less than a decade, close to six million lives have been saved by Global Fund programs,” said Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation. "This documentary paints a compelling picture of why continued support will help the Global Fund save and improve the well-being of mothers and children across the globe.

Narrated by Dr. Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, the film chronicles how U.S. investments in health are empowering communities and putting an end to diseases of poverty. The film includes personal stories from community health workers, patients, and community leaders to show the impact of the Global Fund’s programs in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Indonesia, and was filmed in broadcast-quality Hi Definition by filmmaker David Evans in April and May of 2010.

At present, 4.9 million lives –3,600 a day – have been saved by Global Fund programs. Michael Jackson's This Is It Film To Be Released

It has been reported that a film is to be released of the final footage from Michael Jackson’s rehearsals for his This Is It concerts, with some of the proceeds to go to charity.

Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire the film – at a price of $60 million – with 90% of the profits to go to the Jackson Estate, which will include a charity to be set up in the King of Pop’s name.

Jackson was a huge supporter of charities in his lifetime, and his family hopes to keep his memory alive with the new charity. The singer often visited underprivileged children and children affected by disasters and in hospitals, and worked with organizations such as the Jane Goodall Institute, the TJ Martell Foundation, the United Negro College Fund, the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children, the Prince’s Trust, the Great Ormond Street Hospital, Childhelp USA, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America, Children’s Defense Fund, Elizabeth Taylor’s AIDS Foundation and many more.

Michael Jackson, who passed away last week, featured significantly on the pages of Look To The Stars. He was a passionate supporter of charity, and was honored by many different organizations for the work that he did and the compassion that he showed.

As well as writing We Are The World with Lionel Richie and helping to organize the United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert in the wake of September 11, Jackson also donated the proceeds from a song to victims of Hurricane Katrina, often donated items to charity auctions, and was to donate some of the proceeds from his upcoming shows in London to charity. He set up a burns unit for children and also established the Heal The World Foundation, whose work has included airlifting 6 tons of supplies to Sarajevo, instituting drug and alcohol abuse education and donating millions of dollars to less fortunate children.

Actor Pierce Brosnan has wished his fans a Merry Christmas on his official bolg and has asked a special Holiday favor.

“In the spirit of giving this holiday season please consider making a small contribution to those in need,” he wrote. "The following organizations were on our holiday gift giving list: the Jane Goodall Institute, Roots & Shoots, American Red Cross, Kauai Humane Society.

“These funds will be used to sponsor environmental education and youth based humanitarian programs, provide clean, safe drinking water to a developing nation by distributing thousands of portable water purifiers, offer relief services for the victims of the Southern California Wildfires, and care for numerous stray animals while also supporting the spay and neuter shelter program on the island of Kauai.”

Pierce Brosnan Honored By Jane Goodall

Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has been honored for his charity work in a special ceremony in Washington DC.

Along with his wife Keely Shaye, the 55-year-old was presented with the Responsible Activism in Media and Entertainment award at the second annual Jane Goodall Institute Global Leadership Awards Celebration on Friday night.

“Keely and I are honored to be in Washington, D.C., at such an exciting time in this nation’s history and to accept this award from our dear friend Dr. Jane Goodall,” said the actor, who has been involved in the institute’s Roots + Shoots global environmental youth program since its inception. “I have a wonderful wife in Keely, who is very versed in the world of green. This is a partnership now of 16 years and she has educated me on the environment and how to bring up children, whether it’s the food they eat or the food that we grow at home in Hawaii – clean water, good vegetables, recycling.”

In Venice for its film festival, Natalie Portman has become the first recipient of the Movie for Humanity Award in recognition of her dedication to humanitarian causes.

This accolade from the Kineo Italian Movie Awards aims to recognize film artists who devote themselves to philanthropy, as Portman unquestionably has. Aside from launching the Village Banking Campaign with FINCA, speaking up for the endangered Rwandan Mountain Gorilla, and highlighting the plight of needy children around the world, she is an enthusiastic supporter of Tacare Girl’s Scholarship Programme of the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania.

The scholarship program, which carries out wildlife research in Tanzania, was established to create opportunities for women’s education and provide access to secondary and higher education, ultimately leading to job opportunities.
