Third Eye Blind Encourages Fans To Give Back

Rock band Third Eye Blind hit back at an online leak of their latest album last week by asking all those who downloaded it to give to charity.

“Wow! I leave the country and my album ends up leaking,” said frontman Stephen Jenkins. “I was in Jakarta performing for the fine citizens of Indonesia after their devastating terrorist attack—I can’t speak more highly of the country. I am asking for all those downloaders who illegally downloaded our new album, please donate some money to your local charity.”

The band has two charities in mind that they support whole-heartedly: the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and KickStart.

“The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization,” the band writes on their website. “Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. We thank Animal Planet for the series Whale Wars, which shares the story of Sea Shepherd.”

KickStart is another great cause that the band encourages their fans to support.

“We believe in not taking this brief appointment with life for granted,” writes the band. "And life starts with water. For a lot of people (in fact, some of the coolest people you’d ever know) water is scarce, dirty, and too far away. For them, water everyday is life and death. We support KickStart because they create the tools to end poverty by putting water that was once inaccessible into people’s hands. Third Eye Blind has always been “DIY”, and we support the “Do It Yourself” spirit that KickStart fosters."

Third Eye Blind’s new album, Ursa Major, was released officially yesterday.

The Grateful Dead Auction Concert Tickets For Charity

Ever since the Grateful Dead began its legendary career nearly 45 years ago, the band has supported worthy causes that serve to raise awareness, lend support, and make this world a better place.

Continuing this long-standing tradition of community service that has been a hallmark of the Dead and the Deadhead community, The Dead, known as one of the greatest touring bands of all time, has partnered with Charity Folks to auction a limited number of tickets to their 2009 shows.

All proceeds from the auctions will benefit longtime Grateful Dead-related nonprofits including: The Furthur Foundation – which funds progressive groups working on environmental and social change issues in the Bay Area and around the world: The Rex Foundation – a charity set up by The Grateful Dead in 1983 that aims “to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere”: and the Unbroken Chain Foundation – whose mission is to generate support for, and public awareness of, groups and individuals that bring hope and inspiration to communities where great need exists, and to create partnerships of people working together for a common good, especially in such areas as the arts, education and the environment. Proceeds will also go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and others. Each of these organizations have served and supported a wide range of organizations in the many areas where need exists.

All ticket packages will include band-signed limited edition show posters. Other packages will include VIP perks, such as access to the Loose Lucy’s Lot Lounge. The Dead will also be auctioning special memorabilia from their vault that you won’t want to miss!

This is The Dead’s first tour in nearly five years and the band is excited to be on the road again. The lineup will be the same one that rocked the house last fall at the Obama benefit: The Core Four of Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by guitar monster Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboard ace Jeff Chimenti – both veterans of the 2004 Dead “Wave That Flag” tour.

“The first gig as the Grateful Dead was a benefit,” Weir told Billboard. “It always seemed to us that you get some, you give some back. It makes good sense. It’s just something we’ve always done, and this latest round is, I think a well-conceived, somewhat newer version of it.”

“Charities need money. They need help, especially these days,” added percussionist Bill Kreutzmann. “This puts those seats into the hands of our fans, who are not only getting great seats and good music but also know the money is going to charitable organizations.”

Daryl Hannah To Join Whaling Protest In The Southern Ocean

A major conservation group has announced that they will be getting a little help from the stars when they protest against whaling in Antarctic waters next month.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will have the support of actress Daryl Hannah when she teams up with one of their crews to battle against Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

“Daryl is joining our group,” said Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson. “She’ll be on board — she’s joining us at the end of the month.”

The 47-year-old actress will be on board the group’s flagship, the Steve Irwin – named after the Australian conservationist – when it leaves Australia on December 1.

Japan uses a loophole in a 1986 whaling moratorium that allows “lethal research” to kill up to 1,000 whales each Southern Hemisphere summer – a practice hotly opposed by South Pacific nations such as Australia and New Zealand yet seemingly ignored by other parts of the world. Although the US has always been at the forefront of anti-whaling campaigns, its leadership on whale issues has significantly declined in recent years. The American appointed to be chairman of the International Whaling Commission – William Hogarth – has recently announced he is negotiating a deal that could allow for an International Whaling Commission-sanctioned resumption of commercial whaling. Watson claimed earlier this year that the Sea Shepherds’ harassment of the Japanese whalers has saved the lives of 500 of the giant mammals, but the International Whaling Commission has condemned their tactics.

“This is the fourth year [of the Southern Ocean campaign],” said Watson. “That is three years of lost profits [for Japanese whalers]. How much longer can they keep this up? This is really the key to stopping them — to keep making them lose profits.”

Celebrate Steve Irwin Day At Australia Zoo

Crikey! Did you know tomorrow, November 15, is Steve Irwin Day at Australia Zoo in Brisbane?

There’ll be a ton of ripper activities down at the zoo for the day, kicking off with a free BBQ breakie in the carpark from 6am. Gates open at 8am, and Terri Irwin will launch the day’s festivities at 10am at the Crocoseum, along with Captain Paul Watson from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. This will be followed by a Bindiwear fashion parade, a special performance from Bindi and the Crocmen, an Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors show featuring Terri feeding the Crocodiles, a performance from Australia’s very own Thirsty Merc, and the chance to be the first to play the new Nintendo Wii and DS Planet Rescue games: Wildlife Vet, Animal Emergency, Endangered Island, and Ocean Patrol – designed to teach young players to save, nurture and heal endangered animals.

And in true Steve-o tradition, come along dressed in your Khakis and get 10% off admission to Australia Zoo and a free gift.

Both Terri and Bindi Irwin will be available all day to sign autographs.

Steve Irwin Day aims to raise money for Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, and to help continue Steve’s conservation work and the preservation of wildlife and wild places. Terri Irwin has made an international plea to stop whaling, joining forces with the Oregon State University (OSU) Marine Mammal Institute to gather non-lethal biological research from Humpback Whales. She aims to raise a total of $1.5 million for whale research for the next three years.

“We will be celebrating Steve’s life and achievements through Steve Irwin Day on November 15,” said Terri. “Steve left behind an extraordinary legacy, which we will make sure lives on forever. Together, we can stand shoulder to shoulder to honor this remarkable man. It is only with your help that we can achieve the vision of one man who truly made a difference.”

Martin Sheen To Receive Two Humanitarian Awards

Veteran actor and former President of the United States (at least on TV’s The West Wing) Martin Sheen is to be honored for his humanitarian work – not just once, but twice!

It has just been announced that the actor is to collect the Marlon Brando Award for his career and humanitarian efforts at the fourth annual Stella By Starlight gala benefit on March 17, and follows hot on the heels of the news that the 67-year-old is to receive the University of Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal at a ceremony on May 18.

“He has used [his] celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress,” said University President Rev. John Jenkins. “Such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn, and capital punishment”.

As well as donating time and money to many charities – such as PETA, Earth First, and Help Darfur Now – Sheen has also been involved in many protests involving causes he is passionate about. In 1995, while protesting the annual slaughter of Canadian seals with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the actor was attacked by angry hunters. Then, in 2007, Sheen was arrested while protesting against nuclear weapons in Nevada.

Former recipients of the Laetare Medal include John F. Kennedy, former Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, and former US House Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill.
