United Way of Greater Los Angeles hosted the 5th Annual HomeWalk to end homelessness, a 5k run and walk commencing in Exposition Park, in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday.

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, the event’s Honorary Chair, kicked off the event that featured approximately 10,000 participants. With over 51,000 homeless men and women in Los Angeles County, nearly one-quarter of which are chronically homeless, United Way and its partners are working to drive community awareness and action as part of its year-round campaign to prevent and end homelessness. Over the past 4 years, HomeWalk has mobilized 18,000 walkers, raised $1.7 million and moved 9,000 people into permanent housing.

“For the fifth year, thousands of Angelenos presented a united front against homelessness – collectively saying that the current situation in Los Angeles County is unacceptable. It is crucial that our residents tell elected officials that they are outraged and want this issue solved. HomeWalk gives them that platform,” said Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. “Our communities are suffering, and we know that by mobilizing Angelenos we can continue to raise funds and awareness to create pathways out of poverty, getting the homeless into permanent housing.”

Stars Donate Items To Celebrity Charity Auction To Help Joplin

A number of stars – including Johnny Depp, Yoko Ono, Patricia Arquette, Bono, Jeff Probst, Justin Timberlake, Eminem and Jack Johnson – have donated items to a great auction raising money for the people of Joplin, the Missouri town where an estimated 30% of the buildings were destroyed and over 150 people were killed by a tornado on May 22.

Items going under the hammer include an book about U2 signed by Bono, a script signed by the cast of General Hospital, a rare Lady Gaga Born This Way picture disc, posters signed by Ry Cooder and Martina McBride, a basket ball signed by the Lakers, a guitar signed by Foreigner, the chance to meet Coldplay, Maroon 5 and Uncle Cracker, the chance to Skype with OneRepublic and much more. Sean Lennon has donated a signed guitar, while Yoko Ono has signed a photo of her with John Lennon.

Proceeds from the auction will go to United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas. Last week, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated $500,000 to the people of Joplin in the wake of the tornado.

Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt hosted a star-studded charity party in his native country during the weekend for United Way.

The 9.58 SuperParty was held at the Richmond Estate in St Ann and featured Ludacris, The Dream, Marcia Grifiths and a host of local performers. Sports stars such as sprinter Wallace Spearmon also attended.

Last week, Look to the Stars reported that Atlanta recordings stars Akon and Ludacris united their charitable organizations’ annual Thanksgiving community programs and called upon friends and colleagues to extend a helping hand to those that are less fortunate this holiday season.

The Konfidence Foundation’s 2nd Annual Turkey Giveaway program and The Ludacris Foundation’s LudaCares Thanksgiving program teamed up to give back by donating 2,000 holiday turkeys to help metro Atlanta flood survivors and low-income families in need. Each family received a fresh holiday turkey, along with two side items – sweet potatoes and collard greens.

Dolly Parton Launches New Charity Partnership

Country legend Dolly Parton announced this week that her literacy charity will team up with the United Way of America to double the amount of books the program currently provides.

Parton established the Imagination Library in 1996 as part of her Dollywood Foundation, and it now operates in 566 counties across thirty-six U.S. states, as well as in Canada and England. Her idea was simple: to build an organization that sends one book per month to children from the time of their birth until they enter kindergarten.

“This program is one of the most important ways I know to improve the educational opportunities for children,” said Parton. “When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Letter Carriers Launch Food Drive With Celebrity PSAs

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has announced that the nation’s largest food drive to combat hunger will be conducted this year on Saturday, May 9. On that day, letter carriers will collect non-perishable donations from homes as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

The 17th annual NALC National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger” is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Carriers collected a record 73.1 million pounds of food in last year’s drive. The drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in over 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Donations will be collected by more than 1,400 local branches of the 300,000-member postal union and delivered to food banks, pantries and shelters that serve the communities where they are collected. Assisting in the effort are rural letter carriers and other postal employees, as well as members of other unions and thousands of civic volunteers.

Battlestar Galactica Auction Raises Funds For United Way

As Battlestar Galactica’s final 10 episodes begin airing this Friday, the Sci-Fi Channel will hold two auctions of memorabilia from the show to benefit charity, featuring items from cast members such as Tricia Helfer.

The first event will be a week-long eBay auction from 12 through 19 January with about 200 separate items to bid on (search Battlestar Galactica on eBay). The second will be a two-day live auction, 17 and 18 January, at California’s Pasadena Convention Center where bidders can either show up (free entrance), bid in real time via the webcast or place a proxy bid online.

While eBay is auctioning off the less costly memorabilia, the live auction will offer items such as Galactica character’s costumes, set furniture and props, art, costume sketches, weaponry and jewellery, all available for preview on 16 January. There will also be creative department head panel interviews that day.

Earlier this month, Motley Crue front man, Vince Neil, brought some unusual flair to the Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley for the Skylar Neil Memorial Golf Tournament. He, along with a host of adult film stars, flocked to the greens to raise money to combat childhood illnesses.

“In 1995, I lost my daughter Skylar to cancer, " writes Neil on his website, “Since that time I have tried to do everything I can to help raise awareness and much needed funding for children’s illnesses. I’m so humbled by the response that we receive from our gracious tournament sponsors and participants for the past eleven years. To date they have helped me to raise nearly two-million dollars to fund research to combat cancer, AIDS and Leukemia. Malaria No More Fights A Forgotten Killer

When people think of health and welfare in Africa, they think of AIDS, famine, poverty, and hundreds of other killers that bring death and hardship to the continent. But they hardly ever think of malaria. “It’s not a problem anymore,” they say. “We’ve been treating it for over 100 years…”

And yet it is still a problem – a HUGE problem.

The disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, causes a drawn-out and painful death. It destroys red blood cells and clogs the tiny capillaries that carry blood to the brain and other organs – a horrible way to die in anyone’s books. And it is killing as you read this – an African child dies of the disease every 30 seconds. That’s 3,000 children a day… over 1 million a year. In addition to the devastating human toll, the African economy loses over $12 billion in productivity due to the disease annually.

The Northampton Welfare Rights Advice Service is holding its annual Christmas raffle on Saturday, but this year the prizes will include contributions from celebrities like Johnny Depp, Daniel Radcliffe, Dame Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet.

Around 70 prizes, such as a theatre programme from Dame Judi Dench and an exclusive signed photo from Johnny Depp, are hoped to bring in additional funding for the organization to help raise awareness about the service it provides, which is advice about what state benefits are available to families, the disabled and people over 60. EastEnders, Holby City and The Bill have also donated momentos for Saturday’s event.

While Northampton is collecting celebrity possessions for raffle, NBC is collecting character and set items for auction. Starting Monday, NBC will auction up things like The Office character Michael Scott’s (Steve Carrell) watch and lucky tie, original paintings from the Heroes set, a poker game, props and clothing used by the cast of 30 Rock, and various other collectable pieces from Friday Night Lights and Las Vegas.

Clooney Donates Academy Awards Gift Bag

George Clooney has donated his gift bag from the Academy Awards to the United Way Hurricane Response and Recovery Fund.

The bag and its contents, which include a BlackBerry 8700c, a Kay Unger kimono and a pearl necklace, will be auctioned online beginning March 22nd and ending March 28th. The auction will be held at the United Way website, and the winner will receive a special bonus – a handwritten letter of thanks from Clooney for helping with the hurricane relief effort.
