Save The Children Applauds Obama For Protecting Children

This week, President Barack Obama urged America to “come together to protect our most precious resource – our children.”

“The President laid out a clear and compelling roadmap to helping American families, especially the nearly one in four children living in poverty,” said Mark K. Shriver, senior vice president of Save the Children's U.S. Programs. “We are pleased by his call for increased investments in early childhood education—we know firsthand the difference that high-quality early learning programs can make and have long advocated for more resources for such programs. We look forward to supporting efforts to make the President’s ideas a reality, and believe the National Commission on Children is a proven way to do that.”

Leading up to the President’s national address on Tuesday, Save the Children — joined by more than 40 other organizations — gathered nearly 100,000 voices in support of a children’s commission, calling on the Obama Administration to speak out and take action for underserved kids in the United States.

Jennifer Garner Announces America's Report Card

America earned a lackluster C- grade on child well-being, according to a national report card released today by First Focus and Save the Children. Artist ambassador for Save the Children, Jennifer Garner, joined Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn., retired) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.) to announce the findings of America’s Report Card 2012: Children in the U.S.

“The number of Americans living in poverty remains at a historic high, with nearly one in four children knowing all too well what it means to go without,” said Garner. “Childhood poverty sets children up for failure in school, impacts their health, and can pre-determine the course of their lives. So why, then, are children being left out of the conversation during an election season in which the economy is the primary issue? We need to do better for our kids.”

Commissioned by Sen. Dodd and Sen. Casey, America’s Report Card provides a holistic picture of unmet needs in five areas of a child’s life: economic security, early childhood education, K-12 education, permanence and stability, and health and safety. The report also urges the American people to take action to boost children’s chances for success in school and life: vote in November’s general election for candidates who support investments in children; hold elected officials accountable for commitments to help children succeed; and engage with other local leaders to improve the lives of children in their own communities.

More: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/9090-jennifer-garner-announces-americas-report-card

OneRepublic And Save The Children Launch Every Beat Matters

Launched yesterday, Save the Children and Ad Council’s Every Beat Matters campaign draws on the power of music inspired by children’s heartbeats to give Americans new ways to help millions more children survive.

Multimedia public service ads featuring the creation of OneRepublic's new single “Feel Again” debuted yesterday and will be distributed to more than 33,000 media outlets nationwide. The ads — created pro bono by ad agency BBDO New York and filmed by Academy Award-nominated directors Sean and Andrea Fine — show how children’s heartbeats collected in remote villages of Malawi and Guatemala inspired a hit song that can help bring hope to children around the world.

A portion of Feel Again proceeds will benefit Save the Children’s Every Beat Matters campaign, which aims to bring basic lifesaving care to children around the world. Every year about 7 million children die before their 5th birthday — mostly from preventable and treatable causes, including pneumonia, diarrhea and newborn complications.

Jennifer Garner Blogs For Save The Children On iVillage

Jennifer Garner has blogged on iVillage about her work as an artist ambassador with Save the Children and how early childhood education can make a huge impact in enhancing kids’ lives.

“‘Early childhood education’ has become a sort of catchphrase for politicians and children’s advocates like me,” she wrote. "As an artist ambassador for Save the Children, I’ve had the privilege of seeing Save’s programs firsthand and meeting with the parents and children that they support. I’ve sat in young mothers’ homes. I’ve seen how much these mothers love their children, how their dreams and aspirations for their children are no different than yours and mine are for our own kids. But the truth is, it’s sort of tricky to figure out what exactly “early childhood education” means, what it entails, and how exactly it is relevant to your possibilities as an adult.

“More than 60 percent of poor families don’t have books in their homes. It isn’t that kids should be reading by kindergarten, but they should know what a book is — how to hold it, turn the pages, and how to sit still in anticipation of hearing a story.
