Julianne Moore Shares The Love With Charity For Valentine's Day

This Valentine’s Day, give children living in poverty a lifelong love of reading to help break the lifelong cycle of poverty, one Valentine at a time.

Save the Children’s U.S. Programs and the organization’s artist ambassador Julianne Moore have invited beloved children’s book authors and illustrators Ian Falconer, Kevin Henkes, Leuyen Pham, Brian Selznick and Mo Willems to design limited-edition Valentine’s cards benefiting Save the Children’s U.S. Programs “Love to Read, Read to Live” campaign.

“Nearly 1 in 4 children in the U.S. lives in poverty and most of them don’t have any books in their homes,” said Moore, who credits her upbringing as an “Army kid” living all over the country for opening her eyes to the reality of poverty in the United States. “You can see why these kids often fall behind in school, and then in life.”

Justin Bieber Supports Social Good Facebook Games

Sojo Studios has forged a partnership with global pop/R&B phenomenon Justin Bieber to help children around the world.

The company recently heralded the preview launch of its first “social good” Facebook game, WeTopia, and its first celebrity partnership with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Both DeGeneres and Bieber will provide entertainment marketing support as Sojo rolls out its slate of games, beginning with WeTopia.

“Playing online games is a lot of fun already, but WeTopia makes it better by helping children around the world. Some of these kids need to go to school or they need clean water,” said Bieber. “I’ve been so lucky and blessed and that’s why I believe so much in giving back, and I know my fans will feel the same way when they play WeTopia.”

Uma Thurman And Geena Davis Film PSAs For USAID

In response to the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is joining the Ad Council to launch a national public awareness campaign featuring Uma Thurman and Geena Davis.

The campaign encourages Americans to spread awareness of the crisis, support the humanitarian organizations conducting the relief operations, and learn more about the solutions through President Obama’s Feed the Future initiative. The campaign is titled FWD, or famine, war and drought, which is an acronym for the three crises affecting the Horn.

Ashley Jensen Reports On Health Care In Slums

Actor Ashley Jensen recently visited Delhi in India to see how Save the Children is progressing in its efforts to get better access to health services into the poorest neighborhoods of the world.

With UN countries’ commitment to reduce child mortality by 2015, there is still enormous need. More than eight million children under the age of five die every year, according to Save the Children.

Visiting women in their homes and the alleyways of a slum, Jensen was deeply struck that so many of the deaths of mothers and babies could simply be prevented with inexpensive medicines and basic knowledge. Touring with a midwife trained by Save the Children, Jensen saw her give ante-natal check-ups, advise on dietary requirements during pregnancy, monitor the growth of babies and children and provide vaccinations.

Linkin Park Make Charity Trip To Japan

Six months after the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeastern coast of Japan, American band Linkin Park visited children affected by the disaster in Ishinomaki, a city ravaged by the disaster.

After the disaster, Linkin Park launched a fundraising campaign through their non-profit organization, Music for Relief, with all proceeds going to Save the Children’s relief and recovery efforts in Japan.

Linkin Park visited Taizen Elementary School, where band members met students and school officials. At the school, band members Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda and Dave Farrell tried on disaster-preparedness hoods that Save the Children supplied to the school to protect children from falling debris and possible fires during future earthquakes.

Gilmour Girls' Alexis Bledel To Be In Times Square For Charity Today

Gilmour Girls actress Alexis Bledel will be in Times Square, NYC, today for a very special event with Save the Children.

On September 19, 2011, Save the Children, NGO partners, and hundreds of people will gather in Times Square to watch a human mosaic create an image of a health worker and child. Save the Children is calling for millions more life-saving health workers in the poorest countries as the UN General Assembly begins. They are promoting the Health Workers Count campaign.

Health workers are everyday heroes – they save lives. 350 million children never see a health worker in their lives so millions of children die every year from easily treatable conditions such as such as pneumonia and diarrhoea. Save the Children and other organizations are working together to change this.

Kevin McKidd Is One Tough Mudder For Charity

Scottish actor Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Brave, Percy Jackson) will soon trade in his doctor scrubs for a classic kilt as he gets down in the mud to raise money for Save the Children’s East Africa relief efforts.

On Sunday, Sept. 18, McKidd will compete in the NorCal Tough Mudder in Squaw Valley, Calif. A 10-mile course designed by British Special Forces, the Tough Mudder — known for its mud pits, cliffs, and electric shock obstacles — is designed to test a participant’s strength, stamina, toughness, mental grit and camaraderie. McKidd will “mud it” alongside fellow actors Shemar Moore, Simon Mirren and the ‘Stray Dogs’ team while raising funds for the children affected by the food crisis in East Africa.

Arnold Palmer And Drew Carey To Be Honored At Charity Gala

Tony Martell, Founder and Chairman of the TJ Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research, is proud to announce the honorees for the 36th Annual Awards Gala, which will take place on Thursday, November 3rd at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

“There can be no question that these are four of the most illustrious honorees on the planet,” says Mr. Martell. “They care. They are true humanitarians, every one of them. They are honoring us by permitting us to honor them. On behalf of those fighting cancer today and those who undoubtedly will in the future, we are most grateful.”

Golf legend and philanthropist Arnold Palmer will receive the Lifetime Philanthropic Award. For nearly a half century, Mr. Palmer has been one of the best-known sportsmen and businessmen in the world. In just over two decades, the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children has risen from a community hospital serving Central Florida to an internationally-known health care institution, now ranked as one of the country’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report. Thanks in part to Martell support, these clinicians are increasingly joining forces with researchers around the country and in Orlando to perform research and develop innovative cancer treatments and protocols.

In the midst of the current drought and famine in East Africa, Jack Johnson has announced his support of hunger relief efforts in the region.

Iman And Kevin McKidd Fast For Charity

Supermodel Iman and actor Kevin McKidd backed a Save the Children sponsored 24-hour “Fast-A-Thon” on August 8 to raise awareness and funds for children suffering from the East Africa food crisis.

Participants in the Fast-a-Thon skipped a snack, meal or a day’s worth of food. Iman supported the Fast-A-Thon through her social networks, while Kevin McKidd joined Save the Children staff, volunteers and supporters in fasting while on the Grey’s Anatomy set, and ended the fast on August 9, his birthday. Last week, Kevin McKidd and Save the Children released a PSA to generate more awareness of the emergency situation in East Africa, which can be viewed here.

A severe food shortage from the worst drought in 60 years is threatening the lives of close to 3 million children in East Africa. Save the Children is delivering life-saving food, water, medicines and care to children and families affected by child hunger crisis in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. Given the scale of the East Africa food crisis, Save the Children globally is seeking to raise $100 million for its humanitarian response.

Celebrities Call On World Leaders For Urgent Horn Of Africa Funds

A group of global artists, activists and business leaders have signed a joint letter urging world leaders to step up their response to the famine in the Horn of Africa. They call on them to act “without reservation, prevarication or equivocation” when they meet at an emergency summit in Rome.

Among the signatories are Annie Lennox, Bob Geldof, Simon Cowell, Richard Curtis, Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard, Kristin Scott Thomas, and representatives from charities such as Oxfam, the ONE Campaign, Comic Relief, CAFOD, ActionAid, Save the Children and many others.

“As we write, more than 11 million people are suffering the great agony of the worst famine in Africa for many years. It is incomprehensible that in 2011 anyone should die of starvation. $600 million* is needed now for our fellow humans. Not a great sum for the world, even in a time of great economic difficulty for some. Last week European leaders found over hundred times this amount to shore up the euro and bail out banks, yet countries like France, Italy, the Arab States and Germany have so far given miniscule amounts of money to prevent people dying from hunger. Surely this must be unacceptable? A true measure of strength is how one cares for the weak. A true test of power is how one protects the frail.
