Hidden Coldplay Gigs Raise Charity Cash

Two hidden Coldplay concerts to be played in the UK next month have already raised a huge amount of cash for charity.

“We’re incredibly pleased to report that the ticket sales and auctions for Coldplay’s upcoming “Hidden Gigs” in Liverpool and Newcastle have raised over £238,645 for Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. A huge thanks to all of you who helped towards this amazing total," says a message on the band’s website. “Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: ‘The incredible £238,645 raised by Coldplay fans this week will help us to support the thousands of hidden homeless people, who are all too often forgotten, especially at Christmas which can be a particularly lonely and isolating time. We now look forward to the gigs in December and hope they will raise further awareness of the huge issue of hidden homelessness in the UK.’”

The exact venues of the gigs – which are to highlight homelessness and will take place on December 19 and 20 – will be kept secret until you buy tickets, when you will be sent a text and an email telling you where to go.

Coldplay To Go Into Hiding For Charity

Coldplay have announced that they will play special hidden charity gigs “somewhere in Newcastle and Liverpool” in December.

The exact venues of the gigs – which are to highlight homelessness and will take place on December 19 and 20 – will be kept secret until you buy tickets, when you will be sent a text and an email telling you where to go.

The unique idea behind the gigs – which will benefit homelessness charity Crisis – is that it will give people an idea of the “uncertainty faced by thousands of homeless people who do not know where they will spend the night.”

The photographs, taken under the guidance of renowned photographer Rankin, were snapped by amateur photographer, Jeff Hubbard, who was homeless as recently as a few years ago but has since turned his life around thanks to help from Crisis.
Bob Dylan Gives Royalties To World Hunger Programme

Royalties from Bob Dylan’s forthcoming Christmas album will be donated to the World Food Programme (WFP) at a time when a growing hunger crisis threatens the lives of 108 million people worldwide.

The artist’s international royalties in perpetuity from his forthcoming album of holiday songs, Christmas In The Heart, to be released 12 October, will be donated to WFP, the agency said today. WFP said this extraordinary gift will bring help and hope to hungry families who have been dealt a devastating blow by the financial crisis and stubbornly high food prices.

“Bob Dylan’s generosity to help WFP feed the world’s hungry couldn’t come at a better time. Starting this Christmas, we can give thousands of meals to hungry school children all over the world, a gift for a lifetime,” said Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP, the world’s largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide, adding that for just 25 US cents a day, WFP can fill a school child’s cup with porridge to help them learn better and succeed in the future.

David Gilmour Plays For Crisis

Legendary Pink Floyd front man David Gilmour is to headline a “hidden gig” in London this month to raise money for charity.

The concert is part of a series of gigs raising money for homeless charity Crisis, with bands such as Hot Chip playing concerts with a difference – the details of the gigs are withheld until the last minute to draw similarities to the situation faced by many homeless people on a daily basis regarding accommodation.

Gilmour will perform at a mystery venue on 24 May alongside Afro-blues act Amadou & Mariam.

British Bands To Play Charity Concerts

British bands are celebrating the approaching spring and summer by playing charity concerts in the UK.

To benefit cancer charity No Surrender, Maximo Park will play a gig at the Newcastle College Performance Academy tonight, March 24, and the band will also sign 250 vinyl copies of new song ‘Wraithlike’ for fans who donate a minimum of £3 to the charity.

No Surrender is a web-based forum for young adult cancer sufferers that provides a place where they can find people of their own generation who understand exactly what they are going through. The Trust was set up by Jason Boas – a friend of Maximo Park – in 2007, who at only 33 was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has since raised an overwhelming £150,000. He recently passed away, following organizing a charity auction that featured New Kids On The Block. More information about No Surrender can be found here.

High Hopes For Pink Floyd Charity Auction

Pink Floyd fans listen up: a guitar signed by all of the members of the band – including David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and the late Richard Wright – is up for auction for charity.

The auction – to celebrate the launch of Graham Scarfe’s book, ‘Scarfe of the Wall’, which describes the creation of the artwork for Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall – is now on at BuyOnceGiveTwice.co.uk, and will raise money for Crisis, a charity that fights homelessness.

The guitar comes with a book signed by Roger Waters, and the auction runs until October 31. The current bid sits at £4800 (US$8,313).

David Gilmour Uncomfortably Numb About Charity Setback

It was a case of “Us And Them” for musician David Gilmour earlier this week, after his plans to create affordable apartments for homeless people in London were thwarted by angry locals.

The 61-year-old Pink Floyd guitarist sold his London mansion five years ago to put his ‘house for a house’ philosophy – the belief that the wealthy should sell one of their palaces to provide hundreds of homes for those who are less well off – into practice. The initiative was part of his idea to fund Urban Village, based on a project in New York where an Art Deco hotel had been turned into a block of 400 flats – half for low-paid key workers, the other half for homeless people.

But protests from neighbors have stopped the project, and homeless charity Crisis – which would have benefited from the Urban Village plan – has admitted defeat and is now looking at much smaller schemes.

David Gilmour Urges Celebs To Show Charity

Legendary Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has told British newspaper The Daily Express that he would like more of his fellow wealthy artist to follow his example and make charitable donations.

Gilmour says that he doesn’t know enough of those artists to ask them in person, and therefore wanted to make a public statement.

He told the newspaper, “There was a great tradition of philanthropy in this country that has fallen by the wayside. The problem is that people I meet who could make massive donations aren’t great friends. They usually appear fleetingly at showbiz parties. My friends tend to be normal people who live locally.”
