The holidays are all about giving, and Starbucks is passionate about supporting communities in which they do business. As part of the ongoing partnership between Starbucks and Bono’s (RED), this holiday season customers will have the opportunity to turn all of their purchases (RED)!

Taylor Swift Signs Elephant For Family Health International

As reported earlier by Look To The Stars, Family Health International is one of many charities to benefit from the current auction of celebrity-signed toy elephants organized by PROJECT ZAMBI.

Among those who have signed the elephants specifically for FHI are Taylor Swift (pictured below), the Jonas Brothers, Hugh Jackman, Heidi Klum and Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi.

Will Smith's Children Support Charity Initiative

Jaden and Willow Smith – the actor children of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith – have spoken about their support for PROJECT ZAMBI, a charity initiative started by a group of Hasbro employees to help raise awareness and funds for the estimated 15 million children who have lost parents and relatives to the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

“Willow and I joined Project Zambi to represent all the kids out there who want to make the world a better place,” said Jaden. “We want to encourage kids everywhere to lend a hand and join us in spreading the word about how much children who have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa need our help.”

Carla Bruni Speaks Up For AIDS

France’s first lady Carla Bruni has vowed to speak up more for AIDS sufferers following a visit to Africa earlier this year.

The singer made a trip to Burkina Faso in West Africa in February, and was traumatized by what she saw.

“The fact is that even though treatment is now available, AIDS/HIV is so stigmatized that women are afraid to get help,” said the spokeswoman for the Global Fund. “What I can’t stand is that people can be treated, mothers can protect their children from AIDS, but they are too scared of the disease – and the fear of the disease is what I can fight.”

She hopes to use her position to fight fear of the disease.

Bono To Play Charity Dominoes At Cannes

U2 singer Bono is to co-host a charity event with a difference at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 18.

Bono will join Penelope Cruz and director Pedro Almodovar at the Hollywood Domino tables to benefit The Global Fund, which raises cash to further AIDS research. Along with Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, the stars will take part in a game that has taken Hollywood by storm.

Hollywood Domino is a new take on a very old game originally invented in China over 400 years ago. The new version was developed after two young entrepreneurs – Inge Theron and Daya Fernandez – met in LA during the Oscars. It was not long before a select group of celebrity friends including Salma Hayek, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher caught onto the trend and began to meet regularly to play.

“Beating the credit crunch has never been so much fun,” said Inge Theron. “Staying in has definitely become the new going out. ‘Hollywood Domino’ is a fun and exciting parlour game that you cannot help being absorbed by. U2 Concerts To Raise Cash For Charity

If you’re one of the many anticipating the U2 summer tour- U2360 – then pay attention, because the best seats in the house are being auctioned for charity.

Up to 600 stage-front tickets per concert are being sold via the charity-style partnership with the Global Fund, which helps fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

“All of U2’s income raised from the auction of Red Zone tickets will be donated to charity,” says a U2 spokeswoman.

The “RED Zone” VIP tickets include: A special VIP entrance and greeting by (RED) Zone Hosts; high profile general admission areas on the field adjacent to the stage runway; built-in seating for pre-show comfort; access to special concession and merchandise stand; and as a special bonus, the top 10 highest winning ticket bids for each show will also receive a pre-show backstage tour.

 (RED) Zone Packages are only available by Auction on ticketservice.nl. All proceeds will be donated to support (RED) and the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. The auction starting bid is: US$130.

It is estimated that the boys from Dublin will garner an estimated donation of US$12 million from their summer tour for charity.

Carla Bruni Visits Burkina Faso

Carla Bruni – Sarcozy, the French First Lady, visited one of the poorest countries in the world last week as a Global Ambassador for Protection of Mothers and Children Against AIDS – Burkina Faso in West Africa.

A year after her marriage to President Nicolas Sarkozy brought her into the role of First Lady, Bruni had said she had decided to “do something useful,” signing on with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria last December as its first formal celebrity envoy.

In the past year, Bruni’s approval ratings have risen to more than double those of her husband the President. After the initial condemnation by the French, who criticized the public and glitzy nature of their romance, things have turned in her favor.

The First Lady is planning to use some of her personal fortune to start the ‘Carla Bruni- Sarkozy Foundation’. It will finance scholarships for underprivileged young people.

In Ouagadougou on Wednesday last week, Bruni toured an out-patient hospital where patients are tested and treated for HIV. The most significant moment came when she stepped into a stark room with dirty walls, with four severely malnourished babies, two of whom were HIV Positive.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy said that she was determined to help end the stigma that still surrounds the disease that ended her own brother’s life. “I think I can take part in the de-stigmatization of this disease which is still, unfortunately, associated with shame and exclusion,” she told a group of reporters who had traveled to Burkina Faso to cover her one-day visit on 11th February 2009.

She met with women and children living with HIV at a special hospital and also toured a pre-natal clinic, as well as attending a gathering of Burina Faso’s country coordinating mechanism, which brings together government health authorities, non-governmental organizations, Civil Society and people living with HIV/AIDS.

The First Lady told reporters that she wanted to be more than just a figurehead. “The function of ambassador can be handled in an abstract way where one is not in contact with real people.” I have no wish to treat this role as an ambassador in a superficial manner. I do not want to do it on surface but in depth," she added.

Carla Bruni Raises AIDS Awareness

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the French First Lady and singer, will travel to Burkina Faso to visit Global Fund-supported Aids programs in Burkina Faso on what will be her first official trip as a Global Ambassador for the Protection of Mothers and Children against AIDS.

According to the Joint United Nations Programme HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), approximately 130,000 people are living with the disease in Burkina Faso, of which slightly less than half are women. Approximately 10,000 children in the country are estimated to be living with the HIV virus or AIDS.

Burkina Faso managed to bring down HIV infections from 7.4% in 1997 to 2% in 2005 according to a UN report published in 2008.

According to the 2008 UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, the fight against AIDS is beginning to see strong success in some areas, such as providing treatment for those living with HIV, but little progress has been made in preventing transmission of HIV from mother to child and in assisting women to protect themselves from HIV infection.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy will travel to Burkina Faso in West Africa to visit the capital of Ouagadougou and meet mothers and their children infected with HIV and also to see the efforts made to prevent transmission from HIV positive mothers to their children. She will also meet health officials and charity workers and visit a centre that provides HIV testing and counseling where people can voluntarily go to and know their HIV status.

She took up her role as a Global Ambassador for Protection of Mothers and Children Against AIDS on last year’s World AIDS Day, giving a voice on the Global Stage for the many mothers and children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

As she announced her new role, she pledged to use her celebrity status to draw attention to the most vulnerable victims of AIDS.

“I believe we have gotten used to this disease and we don’t see it as scandalous or a matter of urgency,” she said on the day her appointment was confirmed. “Too often, women are frightened – frightened of being treated, frightened of being excluded from their communities and families.”

Women are more psychologically and socially vulnerable to infection, suffering from the epidemic’s negative effects. Women are the primary care givers in Africa and have seen their household and community burdens grow as a result of HIV, often compromising their own health and their ability to generate income. Children are also among the most vulnerable groups, putting them at risk physically, emotionally and economically.

The French First Lady also has her own personal reasons for becoming an AIDS Campaigner – her own elder brother Virginio Bruni Tedeschi died in 2006 following a long battle with the illness.

The Global Fund is supporting AIDS Programs around the world to reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS on mothers and children with activities like counseling and testing, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, providing orphans and vulnerable children with basic care and support and providing treatment to people in need of it. The advocacy of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy will lead to greater attention on the need to scale up such work world wide.

Carla Bruni Visits The Poor In Brazil

French First Lady and singing star Carla Bruni was in Brazil last week to witness the poverty and hunger faced by millions.

Earlier this month Bruni became a “World Ambassador” for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and spent two days before Christmas visiting slums and hospitals in the South American nation.

Bruni’s itinery included a trip to the Pavao-Pavaozinho favela, a slum situated above Rio’s famed Copacabana beach, to visit Crianca Esperanca, an initiative that tries to lift children out of poverty. She also stopped by a hospital that houses a mothers’ milk bank, a facility that provides breast milk to over 140,000 malnourished newborns.

Bruni also attended a fashion show organized by Moda Fusion, an organization that promotes ethical fashion and showcases the creativity of women from Brazilian slums.

“The support of Carla Bruni and the French government will give greater importance to what we do in the favelas and ethical trade,” a spokeswoman told the Associated Press.

Bruni is expected to stay in Brazil until December 29.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Donates Album Proceeds to Haitian Children’s Charities

During a ceremony in Paris, France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy donated €238,000 (US$330,000) — the total profit from her newly released album — to children’s charities in Haiti.

Entitled “Comme si de rien n’etait” (Simply), the album is Bruni-Sarkozy’s third release. Since its debut in July, it has sold 190,000 copies in France and 220,000 copies abroad.

Regarding the purpose of her donation, the First Lady was simple in her remarks: “I’m pleased that music can be used for this.”

Following her marriage to French President Nicolas Sarkozy in February, Bruni-Sarkozy has heightened the visibility of her charitable efforts. The Global Fund has named Bruni a World Ambassador for the protection of women and children against AIDS.

Bruni has told the press that, “I can put all of the media coverage directed toward me to the service of a useful cause.”

More recently, the former model donated a Christian Dior silk evening gown—worn during the Sarkozy’s state visit to England in March—for an AIDS benefit auction held on December 20.

U2 Believe In Father Christmas For Africa

Carla Bruni Vows To Help Battle AIDS

France’s First Lady, model-turned-pop star Carla Bruni, will use her celebrity profile to rally support in the fight against the deadly AIDS virus.

The wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy will act as a goodwill ambassador for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, as well as other dangerous illnesses including tuberculosis and malaria.

The weekly l’Express magazine reported that Bruni has agreed to be a goodwill ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against AIDS.

" I was very honored that they propose it to me ", said the 40-year-old, who presented her commitment during a press conference on Monday with Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Created in 2002 to finance prevention and access to treatments in poor countries, the fund – based in Geneva – oversees hundreds of programs in 140 countries through public-private partnerships that have raised more than 11 billion dollars.

Bruni, who married Sarkozy in February, expressed an interest in work to battle HIV following a visit to South Africa, which has one of the world’s largest AIDS caseloads.

The supermodel-turned-singer has said she hoped her status as French First Lady could be used to advance a worthy global cause and promises to focus her AIDS charity work on the plight of mothers and children who are affected by the disease. “Every day, 1,000 children are infected by the virus and 90% are it by their mother. There is a whole educational work to be led.”

For her new work, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy plans to lean on the team of her husband by taking advantage of its official movements. " I do not know if I am a good diplomat, but I am full of energy ", she says.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy said that she is very sensitive to the cause of the AIDS, notably because her own brother died from this disease. Her mother created a foundation in Virginio Bruni-Tedeschi’s name in 2007.

The French First Lady wishes to pursue this commitment even after her husband is no longer President.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy also explained that she has other projects in France in the field of education, and more particularly of the fight against analphabetism and illiteracy. " I hope I can speak about it soon more exactly. From the beginning of the next year ", she promised.

American Idol Gives Back $67 Million

David Beckham, Bono, Annie Lennox and Carrie Underwood have all accepted cheques from April’s Idol Gives Back event on behalf of the charities they support.

The show raised over US$67 million for charities such as the Global Fund, Malaria No More, the Children’s Health Fund, Save the Children, and the Children’s Defense Fund.

“I saw first hand with my visit to Sierra Leone with [”UNICEF":http://www.looktothestars.org/charity/1-unicef] last year how devastating malaria can be to a country," said Beckham, who was presented with US$12 million by Idol winner David Cook on behalf of Malaria No More. “This money will help buy millions of bed nets and also protect many people, particularly the young children who are most vulnerable.”

Annie Lennox was also delighted to receive $500,000 for the Treatment Action Campaign.

“This is just to express my gratitude to everyone on Idol Gives Back, for putting together a show with a difference, and for inviting me to be part of it,” she said in a statement. “Because of this event, and the generosity of the viewers, who donated so kindly, I have been able to hand over a cheque for the amazing sum of $500,000 to Treatment Action Campaign, in South Africa. I can assure everyone that every single dollar contributed will go to excellent use, in the work to educate, assist and support people living on the frontline of the HIV/Aids pandemic, many of whom are women and children. Bono received US$10 million on behalf of the Global Fund For AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Green Day Singer Shows His Soul

Green Day singer Billy Joe Armstrong has had his own official shoe released by Converse sneakers, with some of the profits to go to charity.

The shoe – called 1HUN(RED) – is primarily black with red soles, and made from hemp and leather. 10% of the proceeds from each pair sold will go to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt also has his own custom shoe coming out soon.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was created to dramatically increase resources to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. The Fund has committed over US$ 5.4 billion in 131 countries to support aggressive interventions against all three.

The shoes are available in a range of sizes up to 13 and a half, cost $69.99, and are available wherever good shoes are “soled”…

Julia Roberts and Armani Fight AIDS Together

Julia Roberts has designed a T-shirt to be sold under the Giorgio Armani’s (RED) label.

This is the second time Oscar winning actress has worked with Giorgio Armani to raise money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Fund is the brainchild of Bono and Bobby Shriver, and has received over $110 million in proceeds from (RED)-branded apparel and related events since the its inception in 2006.

The new shirt features the words “revolution.evolution.devotion” making up the acronym (RED) arched over a tree of life of Roberts’ design. Roberts’ signature is also included inside. Available for men and women, the T-shirt will be sold online and in Empirio Armani stores worldwide.

Bono Sings The Praises Of Music For Charity

Bono’s (RED) charity has announced a new music delivery system as their latest way to raise money for AIDS sufferers in Africa.

Internet users can pay $5/month to use the service, and will receive a weekly installment containing an exclusive song from one of the world’s top artists, a song by an emerging artist, a piece of non-music content called a “Crackerjack surprise,” and stories of how (RED) funds are being used to combat the deadly disease.

“The world’s best brands created (RED) products that have generated over US$110 million,” said Don MacKinnon, (RED) President of Content. “What we are doing now is applying the (RED) model to music. Every week you will receive great music from amazing artists and people living with AIDS in Africa will receive lifesaving antiretroviral medicine.”

Half of each month’s membership fee will go directly to the Global Fund, and just five subscribers will generate enough money annually to provide a person living with HIV with antiretroviral treatment for one year.

“Don MacKinnon just might be the penicillin the ailing music business needs,” said Bono. “He is an innovator by nature and I have no doubt that some of the music software we are working on at (RED) will help change the way music is received, as well as changing the lives of Africans who will die without the AIDS drug that (RED) can provide.”

Malaria No More Fights A Forgotten Killer

When people think of health and welfare in Africa, they think of AIDS, famine, poverty, and hundreds of other killers that bring death and hardship to the continent. But they hardly ever think of malaria. “It’s not a problem anymore,” they say. “We’ve been treating it for over 100 years…”

And yet it is still a problem – a HUGE problem.

The disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, causes a drawn-out and painful death. It destroys red blood cells and clogs the tiny capillaries that carry blood to the brain and other organs – a horrible way to die in anyone’s books. And it is killing as you read this – an African child dies of the disease every 30 seconds. That’s 3,000 children a day… over 1 million a year. In addition to the devastating human toll, the African economy loses over $12 billion in productivity due to the disease annually.

Malaria No More is an organization with one simple mission: to stop all malaria deaths. Established in 2006 at the first-ever White House Summit on Malaria, the organization uses contributions from the public to fund the provision of bed nets, sprays, anti-malaria drugs, education, and also the development of a vaccine to achieve its aim. Founded by a group of organizations such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, United Way, Millennium Promise, the Global Fund, the United Nations Foundation, and the Global Business Coalition, Malaria No More also supports the President’s Malaria Initiative, a $1.2 billion, 5 year campaign launched by President Bush in 2005 to cut malaria deaths in Africa by 50%.

Malaria No More recently benefited from Idol Gives Back, the special American Idol show that raised money for a variety of organizations both in America and overseas. It is still too early to know exactly how much Malaria No More will get of the $60 million raised by this year’s show, but the music extravaganza donated $9 million to the organization in 2007, and another $8 million to other malaria-related causes. Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Idol judge Simon Cowell, along with Idol performers, have visited Africa and seen the devastation of the disease, and last month 2007 Idol winner Jordin Sparks joined President Bush in Ghana to highlight malaria control efforts.

“I was shocked to learn of the devastation caused by malaria,” said Sparks. “It’s incredible what a difference a simple mosquito net can make in the life of a child.”

The organization, whose spokespeople include David Beckham and Ashley Judd, has also launched an exciting way for schools to join in the fight against malaria and empower students to be active in raising money and saving lives. Stayin’ Alive was created by a group of high school students in Florida, and encourages schools and students to hold fundraising dances. By dedicating a dance, or series of dances, to Malaria No More – and committing to a $1,000 donation from the proceeds – schools everywhere can play a significant role in eradicating malaria.

Malaria No More aims to partner with 10,000 Stayin’ Alive dances throughout America over the next three years. This will provide over $10 million in funds – enough to pay for $1 million bed nets to protect at least 2 million children.

Idol Talk From Alicia Keys

While Idol Gives Back sang and danced its way into the hearts and pockets of America on Wednesday night, it was the words of Alicia Keys that perhaps reflected the thoughts of many people around the world.

“If AIDS got half the attention that the media give to celebrity dramas, this issue would be well on the way to being solved,” said the singer. “It’s crazy… how you can change the lives of people forever for the price of a pair of shoes.”

The singer appeared on the show in a clip filmed during a recent trip to Africa, and urged viewers to donate. Keys established the Keep A Child Alive Foundation to directly assist children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa, and although her charity did not benefit from Wednesday’s show, other organizations such as the Children’s Defense Fund, the Global Fund For AIDS, and Save the Children will receive some of the $22 million already raised from donations to Idol Gives Back.

Keys’ words should make us all stop and think about what we watch and read, and start to act with our hearts.

It will be raining philanthropic celebrities on Wednesday night when American Idol Gives Back airs on the Fox Network. The “star clouds” are set to burst with a gala of music, fun, appearances, and surprises – all in the name of charity.

Idol host Ryan Seacrest will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which was taped in front of a lively audience at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and producers expect this year’s event to raise over $100 million for charity.

“Tonight isn’t just about raising money,” said Brad Pitt, one of the many guests to attend the gala. “Sometimes, to help people, we’ve got to travel outside of our comfort zone to really understand another situation.”

Pitt’s Make It Right campaign, which he launched to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, is one of many good causes to benefit from the event, which last year netted over $76 million for charity. Other organizations to benefit this year include the Global Fund, Malaria No More, the Children’s Health Fund, Save the Children, and the Children’s Defense Fund.

“It’s not about self-promoting,” said former Idol winner Carrie Underwood, who will perform on the show. “It’s not about singing your latest single. It’s not about trying to be the most downloaded whatever on iTunes. It’s all about getting people to call in and do something.”

Viewers of the show on Wednesday can expect performances by Snoop Dogg, John Legend, Miley Ray Cyrus, Annie Lennox, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, and Sheila E., as well as a surprise duet between Fergie and Heart. The show will also be sprinkled with appearances from Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Peyton and Eli Manning, and Reese Witherspoon, and pre-taped messages from David and Victoria Beckham, Kiefer Sutherland, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama will also be shown.

Bono's Charity Auction Raises $42.6m for (RED)

Sotheby’s was seeing red last week as Bono and artist Damien Hirst organized a Valentine’s Day auction of more than 60 works of art to raise funds for Bono’s (RED) charity. And by by the end of the night, the U2 frontman had rallied deep-pocketed bidders to make the AIDS charity auction a raging success to the tune of $42.6 million.

“It is a historic night for artists” said Bono, “An extraordinary night in New York City. I am very moved.”

The U2 frontman was flanked by celebrity pals as he led the guests in a sing-along of the Beatles’ ‘All You Need Is Love’. “I see myself as a servant for Africa,” Bono said, “Tonight is about the awareness of AIDS and the medical treatment that can strongly aid in the demise of this disease.”

Throngs of celebrity bidders were on hand to snatch up items such as a steel and glass cabinet by Hirst called ‘Where There’s a Will There’s a Way,’ which fetched $7.15M. The cabinet was filled with drugs to treat HIV.

“I have watched people dying for lack of these pills,” Bono said after the sale. “I actually can’t quantify how many people that will keep alive. It’s not just the money we made tonight, it’s the excitement around the issue.”

Model Christy Turlington bought Francesco Clemente’s ‘Red Flower on Scorched Earth’ for $155,000, even though it was valued at $70,000.

“When I first saw the catalog, I loved this piece the most,‘’ Turlington said after the sale. "It was completely impulsive.’’

Bono seems to inspire the best of people, so it’s no surprise that most auction items were sold for well above their estimated value.

“Tonight we got serious about love, and not just the love of art, but the love of our brothers and sisters suffering from Aids in the poorest places on the planet,” he said.

A work by London street artist Banksy sold for $1.7M, though it had been valued at no more than $350,000; Murakami’s ‘Red Flower Ball’ was estimated at $700,000, but sold for $1.5M; Richard Prince’s ‘Untitled’ sold for $1.6 million even though the top estimate was $900,000; and Andreas Gursky’s ‘Pyongyang IV’ was valued at $300,000, but adding Bono into the mix led to a final bid of $1.4M.

“I’m never going to be cynical ever again for a while,” Bono said. “We’ve helped change the world a little bit.”

Among those on hand to support the cause were NBC news anchor Brian Williams, R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe, Queen Noor of Jordan, actor Dennis Hopper, tennis star John McEnroe, supermodel Helena Christensen, actor Ed Burns and hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons.

Proceeds from the sale, which was organized at no cost by Bono’s charity organization (RED), will go directly to the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/AIDS relief programs run by The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Brad Pitt Joins Bono's (RED) Campaign

When Brad Pitt does commercials, it is mostly for markets other than the US. But now he is featuring in a homegrown commercial for DELL, in order to join other stars in contributing to Bono’s (RED) campaign.

The highly anticipated DELL computer commercial will be aired during the 2008 Super Bowl in February, and Pitt will donate his entire earnings from it to (RED).

Already in the line up to support (RED) is Joss Stone, who contributed the profits from iTune sales of her video, “Tell Me What We’re Gonna Do Now”, to the initiative. Just ahead of Christmas, Julia Roberts added red leather bracelets she designed with her husband to (RED)‘s product line. (RED) was founded in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver as a product brand to be used by the private sector to generate steady and sustainable corporate funding for charitable initiatives. Consumers simply choose from lines of (PRODUCT) RED clothing, accessories, watches, jewellery, eye wear, and fragrances, and a portion of the profits go toward Global Fund grants to benefit the health of women and children in Africa. Purchases of (RED) products have generated over $50 million for the Global Fund in only 20 months.

In Rwanda, Swaziland, and Ghana, (RED) money has financed the setting up of health centers, training for doctors and nurses in antiretroviral therapy, programs to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, and education on HIV/AIDS prevention.

“Philanthropy is like hippy music, holding hands,” Bono told Forbes Magazine. “(RED) is more like punk rock, hip hop, this should feel like hard commerce.”

Charity Gift Ideas For Christmas

“Julia has helped to create a beautiful accessory for both women and men,” said Armani. “These will also be a visible reminder of the part that we can all play in fighting AIDS in Africa.”

Also benefiting the (RED) campaign this Christmas is a new festive single by Grammy nominees The Killers. The multi-platinum selling group is set to release their second Christmas single, “Don’t Shoot Me Santa”, at the end of November, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Global Fund.

The single is a follow-up to last year’s popular release, “A Great Big Sled”, and will be released to radio stations on November 26, with digital downloads available on November 27. The video will debut as part of (RED)’s World AIDS Day celebrations on December 1.

More gift ideas to benefit sufferers of AIDS can be found in the 7th On Sale auction being held on eBay. Over $9 million worth of goods are up for sale in the auction, which runs until December 6, including the dress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker to Ralph Lauren’s 40th Anniversary fashion show earlier this year.

Over 30,000 individual items are available in the auction, being organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), with proceeds going to charities that provide care, services, and housing to those who suffer from HIV/AIDS. And in addition to money raised directly by the auction, the MAC AIDS Fund will match every dollar raised online up to $500,000.

The 7th On Sale began in 1990 as a partnership between the CFDA and Vogue magazine. This is the fifth time the auction has been run, and in the past the events have raised over $12 million for charities such as the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the AIDS Community Initiative of America, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Greenhope Services for Women, the Harlem United Community AIDS Center, and the HIV Law Project.

Idol Gives Back to Children

When American Idol announced last spring that for every vote cast after their April 24-25 special broadcast “Idol Gives Back,” sponsors would make donations to the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund (CPEF), no one expected it to result in over $75 million.

CPEF is distributing the funds through organisations that benefit children in the US and Africa. In the States, Save the Children, America’s Second Harvest, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of America and Children’s Health Fund will be the recipients for approved project proposals. In Africa, $6 million has already been donated to each of five organisations for projects that focus on health and education.

Save the Children, UNICEF, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria, each with a very strong presence throughout Africa, are grateful to the Idol Gives Back campaign. While Save the Children will continue to address preventable deaths from things like diarrhea and pneumonia across the continent, UNICEF is using the money in Rwandan schools to provide free meals and ‘catch-up’ programs to get drop-outs out of the working fields and back into the classrooms. The Global Fund is supporting anti-AIDS performances in South Africa, where in some areas HIV infection rates in youth are actually on the decrease. The sharp and critical plays on drugs, sex and AIDS are more powerful than a classroom lecture.

The CPEF donation is welcome support where malaria claims a child every 30 seconds. “It makes a massive difference,” says Martin Edlund of Malaria No More, who, along with Nothing But Nets is distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and also works on anti-measles, AIDS and tuberculosis initiatives. Intelligent projects like these are not hand outs, but efforts to help get people’s lives back into their own hands. And they ensure the most benefit directly to those they’re intended for. “You can’t put a bed net in a Swiss bank account.”

Clinton, Foxx Speak Against HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria

One might not expect a politician and an award-winning entertainer to have much in common, but former US President Bill Clinton and actor/singer Jamie Foxx speak the same language when it comes to active involvement in fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis & malaria. The two shared the stage during the Annual Global Business Coalition Gala on June 13th at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

The award Gala is held annually to recognise companies and people who demonstrate action and commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Among the 700-plus guests were political leaders, celebrated entertainers, public heath experts and CEOs of member companies as well as NBA stars Dikembe Mutombo and Samuel Dalembert. Sir Richard Branson was one of the evening’s featured speakers, and discussed the commitment of his Virgin Unite to eradicating the HIV virus.

Jamie Foxx and HBO co-president Richard Plepler presented the premier of Test America, a Public Service Announcement campaign produced in conjunction with the National Basketball Association, GBC, and the Kaiser Family Foundation to educate millions of at-risk Americans about the need to get tested for HIV. Audiences were entertained when Foxx joined DJ Doug. E. Fresh in an impromptu rap, chanting “we’re here to fight H-I-V” with the spectators.

Bill Clinton was honoured with an award for his outstanding action and commitment towards the Global Business Coalition’s fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis & malaria. During his speech at the Gala, he commended Foxx, Doug E. Fresh, and members of the National Basketball Association for taking part in the inspiring Test America PSA campaign. He then thanked GBC for bringing a committed group of leading private-sector executives and NGOs to tackle three global epidemics. He later urged the executives to work together to do what is right: fight for equality for all people, and fight to end the three diseases.

The night left a clear message in mind that it is everybody’s responsibility to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis & malaria. To quote one of the evening’s speakers, Ophelia Haanyama Orum – HIV-positive author of the book “True to Myself”: – “Open your eyes, open your minds, and open your hearts. Walk with me, and continue your work to make a positive difference for people with HIV.”
