Celebrity Climbers Reach The Summit Of Kilimanjaro For Charity

Last September, Jessica Biel and several other celebrities announced they would trek to the top of Africa’s highest peak to raise awareness about the need for clean water.

“This is a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed now,” she said at the time. “I want to help any way I can in order to raise awareness toward the life-threatening clean water crisis happening not only in Africa but around the world.”

Now, almost four months later and after five days of serious climbing, the group which also includes ‘Into the Wild’ star Emile Hirsch, Grammy-nominated musician Kenna, rappers Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, have reached the summit of the 19,340–foot Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, to raise awareness of the global water crisis.

Australian actress Isabel Lucas may currently be climbing Kilimanjaro with a host of her celebrity friends for charity, but just before she left she recorded an advert for the the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

“Isabel was out here late last year and appeared on Rove and said she would love to support us,” said the organisation’s Australian director Jeff Hansen. He went on to explain that the ad was actually filmed last winter, but now is the time to act as the organization battles the Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

The Australian advert coincides with Lucas’ climb for charity.

Emile Hirsch To Summit On The Summit For Charity

Actor Emile Hirsch has announced he will join Jessica Biel and Isabel Lucas in climbing Mt Kilimanjaro for charity over the next week.

Summit on the Summit will see the stars join Kenna, Lupe Fiasco and others climb the highest peak in Africa to raise money and awareness for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and PlayPumps International.

Hirsch describes the climb as “an epic adventure with an educational process on the global water crisis,” and adds “Put this on the books: I’m making it to the top.”

Justin Timberlake joined Jessica Biel, Isabel Lucas, Kenna, James Vander Beek, Zach Braff, JoJo and Devon Aoki at a special Summit on the Summit Kilimanjaro Pre-Ascent event held at Voyeur in West Hollywood on Wednesday, December 9.

The group was celebrating their upcoming charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in January to raise awareness of clean drinking water. The Summit On The Summit expedition will raise money and awareness for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and PlayPumps International.

Rapper Jay-Z has been honored by the United Nations for his humanitarian work in Africa.

The performer and president of Def Jam Records was praised for his work when he attended the United Nations Global Leadership Awards Gala in New York on Wednesday. He recently returned from Africa, where he has invested heavily in programs to supply clean water.

“Many charities, you close your eyes and cross your fingers and hope that the money gets to the people who really deserve it,” he told People Magazine. “But with this, I got to go to Africa, see the water pumps. I got to see the kids turn them on.”

New Zealand-born singing sensation Hayley Westenra has recorded a special message for UNICEF.

The 21-year-old shot to stardom in 2003 when her first international release, Pure, went to number 1 on the British charts. Now she is the youngest UNICEF Ambassador in the world, and she has recorded a special public service announcement asking people to join her by becoming a UNICEF Global Parent.

Jay-Z To Raise Awareness Of Global Water Crisis

Jay-Z, rapper and president of Def Jam Records, announced on Wednesday that he will work with the United Nations and MTV to get children involved in the fight against the worldwide water crisis. He cited statistics that 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water and 2.6 billion lack proper sanitation.

The singer said that when he visited Africa on tour he was shocked at how many of the world’s poor had no access to sanitary water services.

“As I started looking around and looking at ways that I could become helpful, it started at the first thing — water, something as simple as water,” he said at a news conference at U.N. headquarters with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
