Bailee Madison To Host Live Twitter Video Chat On Starlight Day

Actress Bailee Madison, who appeared most recently in the movie “Parental Guidance” and stars as young Snow White on the hit ABC show “Once Upon a Time,” is expanding her role with the Starlight Children's Foundation by becoming a Starlight Ambassador and helping the organization kick off its 30th anniversary celebration with a variety of activities scheduled around Starlight Day on May 3.

In the morning at 10:30 Bailee will make a special stop at Children's Hospital Los Angeles where she will visit with kids who are hospitalized with serious or chronic illness. Then at 4pm PST, fans will get the chance to Tweet questions to Bailee using #Starlight30 during a live Twitter Video Chat.

Bailee was inspired to help Starlight Children’s Foundation to improve the life and health of kids and their families in 2008 when she attended her first Starlight gala. Since then, the young actress has proven her dedication to Starlight families by appearing in public service announcements, attending hospital and community-based events and co-hosting Starlight’s annual gala, the very same event that first drew her to the cause. In 2009, Bailee was named spokesperson for Starlight’s StarPower Ambassador program, which encouraged young people throughout the United States to make a difference in the lives of hospitalized and chronically ill children.

Hollywood Legend's Estate Gifts $11 Million To Children's Hospital Los Angeles

Children's Hospital Los Angeles announced today that the estate of the legendary Oscar-winning filmmaker Billy Wilder and his wife Audrey made an $11 million gift to the hospital’s new endowed chair in the Division of Neurosurgery and to the hospital’s Endowment in Neurosurgery.

In honor of the generous gift from The Wilder Family Trust, the hospital will name the new Neurosurgery chair the Billy and Audrey Wilder Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery, which will receive $5 million of the donation. In addition, $3 million will be dedicated to the new Billy and Audrey Wilder Endowment in Neurosurgery, a hospital clinical care program under the stewardship of Chief of Medical Staff Mark Krieger, MD, (Los Angeles, Ca.), head of the hospital’s Neurosurgery division.

Of the remaining gift, $1.5 million is to be distributed to the endowed chair of the hospital’s newly-established inter-departmental Neuro-Oncology Program under the direction of Jonathan Finlay, MD, (Studio City, Ca.), director of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Neural Tumors Program within the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. In addition, $300,000 will be earmarked to complete the Hay Edward Baher Chair in Pediatric Rheumatology, which will be under the leadership of Andreas Reiff, MD, (San Marino, Ca.), chief of the Division of Rheumatology. The remaining donation will go toward the hospital’s under-funded and unreimbursed hospital programs that help the more than 96,000 young patients Children’s Hospital Los Angeles treats annually.

Actress Chandra Wilson is helping to raise awareness about Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and Mitochondrial Disease by directing an episode of ABC Television’s medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” which incorporates a character found to have Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.

Board members of the CureMito! non-profit organization, patients and families affected by mitochondrial disease and cyclic vomiting syndrome, supporters and members from the local community including Assembly member Anthony Portantino, along with CureMito! Ambassador Chandra Wilson – who plays the role of Dr. Miranda Bailey on ABC television’s medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” – will gather together at the Westin Pasadena Hotel to view the historic episode and public service announcement as they air to the public on November 15th, 2012 at 9 pm.

Pau Gasol Honored With Kia Community Assist Award

Los Angeles Lakers forward-center Pau Gasol is the recipient of the first-ever season-long Kia Community Assist Award in recognition of his outstanding efforts in the community and his ongoing philanthropic and charitable work, the NBA announced yesterday.

Kia and the NBA are honoring Gasol in part for his ongoing support of Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The pre-medical-student-turned-NBA-star has been a hospital champion for the past several years. In addition to frequent visits with patients, Gasol facilitated a new partnership this year between the hospital and Grifols, a Barcelona-based global health care company. The company has since donated a Phocus RX machine to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which enhances safety and efficiency, and plans to donate an inventory management system to the hospital’s pharmacy. Gasol’s passion for supporting children’s health also compelled him to serve as a Hoops for St. Jude ambassador to benefit the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In his third consecutive year as an ambassador, Gasol spent time with young patients battling cancer and other deadly diseases at St. Jude and filmed a public service announcement to help increase awareness and funding for the hospital. 

 "I am honored to receive the 2011-12 Kia Community Assist Award and thrilled that it will benefit Children’s Hospital Los Angeles," said Gasol. “Supporting children’s health and wellness is my passion, and Children’s Hospital does a tremendous job of giving children with serious illnesses a chance to grow up and become healthy adults.”

Chelsie Hightower of “Dancing With The Stars” traveled all the way from Utah to spend Valentine’s Day at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and the kids loved spending time with her. Chelsie said while she is not particularly romantic herself, she would much prefer to spend the day giving back and making a difference in the lives of children. Chelsie was also catching up with her friend, and “Dancing With The Stars” champion JR Martinez at the party, who said how excited he is to become a father when he welcomes his daughter this year. J.R. gave the patients his undivided attention as he listened intently to their stories. He was overheard sharing words of encouragement with the children and telling them how much they inspired him.

“As you may know, I already do a lot of work with Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and now that I live here, I want to start doing work with this hospital," she blogged before the event. "I will sign autographs, take photos, whatever you dolls want, as long as you have an unwrapped (still in the packaging though) toy for children of all ages (especially stuff for teens) to donate!

“For health purposes, we will not be accepting stuffed animals, or anything unpackaged for that matter, with the exception of books. In my past experience with this, I’ve found that fun card games and things the children can play with in bed always make the best presents. Here are a few examples of fun things to bring: Monopoly Deal, Scrabble Slam Cards, SORRY! Revenge Card Game, Yahtzee Hands Down Card Game, etc. Target or Walmart are both great places to find games like these!”

The pictures – which include Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan – were presented to the Hospital at a special ceremony with La Toya Jackson earlier this week. Former “Entertainment Tonight” host Mary Hart, who is also a hospital trustee, arranged the donation.

Surfing Stars To Teach Cystic Fibrosis Kids

A host of surfing stars will gather in Santa Monica tomorrow, July 30, to teach youngsters with Cystic Fibrosis how to surf.

Along with Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the Mauli Ola Foundation presents its Cystic Fibrosis Surf Experience Day to get children and young adults with cystic fibrosis out in the ocean water to have a great time. The ocean air, which is an elevated saline environment, facilitates the breakdown of mucus in patients’ lungs when inhaled.
