Barry Manilow Stands Up For A Cure

Fans of Barry Manilow will be excited about the new auction benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The charity is giving devotees of the singer two chances to meet Manilow backstage at concerts in Las Vegas and at the Nassau Coliseum. Both chances give you front row tickets to the shows.

The show at the Nassau Coliseum will take place on Valentine’s Day in February, and will be hosted by Kelly Ripa. The experience includes pre-concert reception with open bar (6pm) at Doolin’s Restaurant at the Nassau Coliseum plus 2 backstage passes and photos with both Barry Manilow and Kelly Ripa.

The auction has been organized by Stand Up For A Cure, and also features the chance to hang out on the set of Nicolas Cage’s new movie, and a jersey signed by Wayne Gretzky. The auction ends on January 7 and can be accessed here.

The 15th annual FFANY Shoes On Sale event will be held live on television tonight, October 15, to benefit breast cancer research.

With an appearance by Reba McEntire, the Fashion Footwear Association of New York gala event will take place at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York, with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dinner and the awards ceremony. QVC viewers will be treated to more than 100,000 half-price pairs of shoes, donated by nearly 100 brands, and will be able to view the event in a live broadcast on the channel from 7-10pm, ET. Partygoers in New York, meanwhile, will be able to walk their way into deals in the exclusive Designer Salon, which will feature styles from such top names as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and Michael Kors.

Over the past 14 years, FFANY Shoes on Sale has sold more than a million pairs of shoes and contributed more than $28 million to the cause. Through funds raised in past years, a groundbreaking nationwide network of prominent breast cancer research centers was developed. This year, eight organizations will benefit from the sale, including the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Gillette Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Breast Oncology Program at University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Research Center of Washington University, the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the John Wayne Cancer Institute Breast Center at Saint John’s Health Center.

Elizabeth Hurley Flicks The Pink Switch

British model and actress Elizabeth Hurley attended a special gala to raise money for breast cancer research in New York late last week.

The 43-year-old was on hand in Bloomingdales in the Big Apple to take part in the store’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrations, and personally flipped the switch to turn the retailing giant’s lights turn pink as part of their commitment to raise awareness of the disease.

Hurley has been a supporter of breast cancer charities since losing her grandmother to the disease. She has been a leading light in Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, and created the “Elizabeth Pink” lipstick to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

‘My grandmother had breast cancer, as have a number of my friends," she said. "Now, more than ever, it is important to get the message out. Survival rates are rising, and each year we get closer to a cure. If breast cancer is detected early, it is 98 percent curable.’

Is the change of seasons bringing you down? Are you bored with waiting for winter to roll in (or, for you in the Southern Hemisphere, are you getting impatient for summer to hit)? Well, this week sees three great events to put a “spring” in your step.

Later tonight, September 30, singer and breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge is kicking off the Hard Rock Café’s month-long Pinktober campaign with a show in Universal City.

Pinktober is the ninth annual breast cancer awareness campaign launched by Hard Rock Café, and will feature special Pinktober parties and live music events at Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels around the world raising awareness and money for local, national, and international charities, such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. A huge range of music events are listed on the official Pinktober website, as well as awesome pink merchandise. Hard Rock Hotels will also be donating 25% of every room rate to breast cancer research.

After a late night tonight, you’ll have to be up early in the morning to catch the USO of Greater Los Angeles’ Fourth Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament. The event – to be played at Trump National Golf Club, One Oceans Trail
Drive, Palos Verdes – will feature a range of familiar faces, including Kelsey Grammar, Home Improvement’s Richard Karn, John Ratzenberger, Michael Reagan, Mickey Dolenz, and Kevin Farley.

Tee Off is at 8:30am, and the event will raise funds and support operational programs at the Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX and the USO Centers at Palm Springs and Ontario, California International Airport. These USO Centers serve as recreation and service areas for American troops and their families on the move to and from duty stations worldwide. The centers serve more than 55,000 troops annually and have been increasingly active due to the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And finally, keep your calendars open for Saturday, October 4. That’s the night of the 11th Annual Lili Claire Foundation Benefit Dinner and Concert, hosted by Matthew Perry.

The evening will take place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and promises to feature a talented line-up of performing musical guests, including Ed and Dean Roland of Collective Soul, Terri Nunn of Berlin, and many more. Guests expected to attend the event, chaired by Randy Jackson, include Joely Fisher, Brad Garrett, Bianca Kajilich, Sara Rue, John Schneider, and Bradley Whitford.

Due to the new venue hosting this year’s event, concert only tickets are available at an affordable price which includes a California wine tasting party. Ellen DeGeneres Joins Breast Cancer Campaign

Ellen DeGeneres and the makers of One A Day multivitamins have teamed up to issue a call to action for women nationwide to take an active approach to help maintain their own breast health through the “One A Day Women’s Wake-Up Call” program.

During September and October, the “One A Day Women’s Wake-Up Call” program offers everyone the opportunity to go to the One A Day Web site at www.oneaday.com and register to have a free personalized phone call from Ellen DeGeneres sent to their friends and loved ones to advise them about the simple things they can do to help support their own breast health.

The goal of the program is to reach as many women as possible by the end of October. In addition, One A Day will make a donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® to help fund innovative clinical research and also increase public awareness about the importance of doing simple things to support good breast health.

Stars Compete For Charity On Celebrity Apprentice

16 million people tuned into the first episode of Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice on January 3, a show in which celebrities work to win money for the charity of their choice. Critics may argue it is a publicity stunt to boost ratings, but when $250,000 is at stake to go to a good cause, all is fair in ratings and charity.

The show marks the 7th series of reality television show The Apprentice, and features a return to the original format of a male team versus a female team. The men’s team named themselves Hydra, and the women have chosen the name Empresario.

Every week, the money earned on a project goes to the team leader’s charity. In the first episode, actor Stephen Baldwin headed the winning team, and the breast cancer charity named for his mother – the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund – was the first charity to reap the benefits of male star power. Baldwin proudly presented a check in excess on $69,000 to the charity. His celebrity teammates include KISS bass player Gene Simmons, Heavyweight Boxing Champion Lennox Lewis, country singer Trace Adkins, America/Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan, Ultimate Fighting Champion Tito Ortiz, and Sopranos star Vincent Pastore.

The female celebrities have lost two challenges and two teammates – former Playboy Playmate Tiffany Fallon and Olympic Gold Medalist Nadia Comanechi. The remaining competitors include actress Marilu Henner, former supermodel Carol Alt, Olympic Gold medalist Jennie Lynch, Elemundo executive Nely Galan, and infamous veteran Apprentice star Omarosa.

Hill, McGraw and More Become Cartier LOVECHARITY Ambassadors

Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Djimon Hounsou, and Eva Mendes are among the list of 2007 Cartier LOVECHARITY Bracelet Ambassadors.

The Cartier LOVE bracelet was introduced more than 30 years ago, and has risen to be one of the most coveted jewelry designs in the world. In 2006 alone, more than $1.2 million was donated to eight global charities from the sales of its LOVECHARITY bracelet, spurring the company to create a new LOVECHARITY bracelet for 2007. The goal is to exceed last year’s donations as a number of new celebrities join the endeavor.

The 2007 LOVECHARITY bracelet features an 18K white gold miniature LOVE bracelet graced with the word LOVE and accented with two signature screw motifs. It is set into a knotted silk cord available in various colors, with each cord designating support of a unique cause. The bracelet costs $475 with $100 per bracelet benefiting its corresponding charity.
