Richard Branson And Friends Complete London Marathon For Charity

Richard Branson led his team in yesterday’s London Marathon to an outstanding result, raising huge amounts of money for charity.

The entrepreneur finished just behind Natalie Imbruglia in the race, which saw a total of 18 new world records – including the number of runners tied together. The human chain – which featured 34 people tied together by a bungee cord – included Princess Beatrice, the first member of the royal family to compete in the event.

The Princess – who completed the 26.2 mile course in 5 hours, 15 minutes and 57 seconds – was running to raise money for Children In Crisis, and joined other celebrities in Branson’s team including Jenni Falconer (CLIC Sargent and Virgin Unite), Lee Evans (Save the Children), Natalie Imbruglia (Virgin Unite), Lorraine Kelly (CLIC Sargent), Gordon Ramsay (Scottish Spina Bifida Association). Ramsay, however, did not complete the race – despite being a veteran of marathons in the UK and US.

A huge number of celebrities have signed up with Richard Branson’s Virgin to run the 2010 London Marathon for charity.

The stars and famous faces are each running for the charity of their own choice. Confirmed to take part with Branson – who says he has been trying to train as much as he can – are Princess Beatrice (Children In Crisis), Jenni Falconer (CLIC Sargent and Virgin Unite), Lee Evans (Save the Children), Natalie Imbruglia (Virgin Unite), Lorraine Kelly (CLIC Sargent), Gordon Ramsay (Scottish Spina Bifida Association) and many more.

The marathon takes place on April 25, and you can help donate to the stars’ charity causes by logging on the VirginLondonMarathon.com website. You can also register to run the marathon yourself.

British charity CLIC Sargent is to benefit from sales of a new calendar featuring the inspiration selections of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and other icons for the music world.

Music and entertainment specialist HMV is to mark the third anniversary of its acclaimed my inspiration campaign by featuring memorable highlights in a charity calendar for 2009/2010.

These include the my inspiration selections of Bob Dylan – who selected Scottish poet, Robert Burns; Bono and Paul McCartney, who, in turn, cite Bob Dylan as theirs; Paul Weller, who was first inspired by the songwriting of Lennon and McCartney; Bruce Springsteen, who was influenced by Blues performer Woodie Guthrie; and Deborah Harry, who found inspiration in the songs of Leonard Cohen.

For the entire month of May, items from stars such as Bono, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Ricky Gervais, Cliff Richard, Girls Aloud, Eric Clapton, McFly, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Schumacher, Lulu and many more.

The Big Bid kicked off on May 4 with an event that benefited the Mildmay HIV+AIDS Charity based in East London, in which someone paid £4,200 for the chance to meet Sir Cliff Richard. Other charities that will benefit from the auction include Help for Heroes, Amazing Daisy, CLIC Sargent and more.

Singer Melanie Brown’s auction last year of household goods and clothing in the UK went so well – bringing in thousands of pounds for CLIC Sargent – she’s decided to do it again in her newest residence, the USA.

“I’m going to be auctioning off a ton of stuff,” she said.

Spice Girls memorabilia, costumes from tours and wardrobe items from the Spice Girls movie and Dancing With The Stars television program are on the block, as well as items out of her closet. On her website she promises to add more.

Since Spice Girls singer Melanie Brown was moving herself from the UK to the US, she found that keeping her English manor’s contents was one household too many – so she auctioned everything on eBay and donated the proceeds to CLIC Sargent.

Brown’s motorbike, grand piano, furniture, clothing and Spice Girl paraphernalia translated into thousands of pounds for the children’s cancer charity. Where every day ten children are diagnosed with cancer, CLIC Sargent aims to provide financial and practical support to families through specialist care in hospital and home.

Brown was proud to contribute to something meaningful, Evening News 24 reported. “The older you get, the more you realise that if people are giving you something, you have a responsibility to do something in return, by lending your time and name and support.”

Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown is to auction the contents of her home, including all of her treasured outfits and items from the girl-band era, for charity.

The auction, being run through eBay, will raise money for CLIC Sargent, an organization that cares for young people with cancer and their families both in hospitals and in the community.

Mel B wants to spice up your life by offering you the chance to get your hands on costumes from the recent Return of the Spice Girls tour, the coat from the band’s Stop video, her trademark fake fur outfit consisting of a bikini top and matching mini-skirt, and the outfit she wore when she and her fellow Spice Girls met former South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Texas Helps Children In Scotland

Scottish singer and founder of the band Texas, Sharleen Spiteri, stepped out for children with cancer in Edinburgh last week.

The 40-year-old singer, whose hits include I Don’t Need A Lover and Once In A Lifetime, visited the youngsters at a hospice in the Scottish capital as part of her support of CLIC Sargent, an organization that provides accommodation for the families of young children who get cancer, giving them and their families a long-term base close to the specialist treatment unit at the Sick Kids Hospital.

“As a mother, it means so much to me to be involved with CLIC Sargent, and I have seen for myself the fantastic work they do for children with cancer and their families in Scotland,” said the singer, who is also the patron of the charity. “I cannot imagine how devastating it must be to be told your child has cancer, and this charity is a real lifeline.”

Formula 1 Charity Auction Tops $10 Million

The British Grand Prix weekend began earlier this month with performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall by Lemar and Beverley Knight, Mica Paris, Run DMC and Ronan Keating, followed by an auction to raise money for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity. Over $10 million was raised, with Formula One memorabilia and a Pablo Picasso print among the top earners at the auction.

Alex Waters, 20-year-old British Formula 3 racing driver, raised over $350,000 when he auctioned 22 signed caricatures of leading F1 racers, drawn by their team mates. F1 Racing Magazine editor Matt Bishop says, “These drawings are a totally unique, highly collectible lot, and to our knowledge, this is the first time that a full complement of World Championship F1 drivers have penned sketches of each other and made the originals available as a complete set for charity.”

Mr Waters has pledged to donate half of all sponsorship money he raises to the children’s cancer charity that supported him and his family while he was being treated for cancer. Every day 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia in the UK.
