Annie Lennox Backs Charity Campaign On World AIDS Day

Eight in ten young people know that HIV cannot be transmitted by sharing a drink with someone who is HIV positive, yet three quarters say they still wouldn’t do it. Common myths and negative attitudes towards young people with HIV can leave many feeling alienated, alone and stigmatized.

A new campaign, Life In My Shoes, is launched this World AIDS Day by UK charity Body & Soul, which aims to tackle these issues head on and challenge the ongoing issues faced by young people living and affected by HIV in the capital.

Backed by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, the hard hitting campaign is being officially launched at City Hall by Body & Soul patron and London HIV Ambassador Annie Lennox, and the Mayor’s Advisor for Health and Families Pamela Chesters.

Annie Lennox To Join Mel C For Charity Concert

Annie Lennox and former Spice Girl Melanie C will perform a special concert for charity in the UK on October 20.

In memory of the late Dame Anita Roddick, Body & Soul presents Voicestorm 2010, celebrating strong inspirational women through an exceptional line of female artists. Established in 1996, Body & Soul is a pioneering charity providing support to children, young people and families living with or closely affected by HIV.

Anita Roddick was a unique and amazing woman, she was an optimist in a society that is often harsh, she was an activist up to the day she died; she never lost hope or stamina because she knew that there was joy and possibility in creating new, imaginative ways to make things better. She knew that doing any small thing to improve a life, to right a wrong, brings joy to those who do, as well as to those who benefit. Anita helped Body & Soul grow up and nurtured their ambitions.

Annie Lennox: London Ambassador For HIV

Annie Lennox met with the Mayor’s Advisor on Health and Youth Opportunities Pam Chesters at City Hall in London yesterday, as part of a roundtable bringing together representatives of HIV organizations and people living with HIV.

The first to have taken place since Annie Lennox’s appointment as the Mayor’s unpaid London Ambassador for HIV, the aim of the roundtable was to begin developing a program of activity to tackle the challenges faced by people affected by HIV. Key issues they discussed were the promotion of positive attitudes towards sexual health amongst young people and the impact of stigma on whether individuals get tested or seek treatment.

Pam Chesters said: ‘This has been a very productive meeting, bringing together people with expertise and personal experience. With the majority of people living with HIV in the UK being in London – many of them undiagnosed – the Mayor wants to identify ways to address what is still a serious health and social issue as part of our overall plan to tackle health inequalities in the capital.’

A host of stars joined British boy band Take That in London last week for a very special charity party with a twist.

Celebrity Clothes Get Ripped For Charity

A new fashion initiative with a difference has been launched – featuring the shredded old clothes of celebrities – to raise money for charity and persuade people in the UK to recycle their unwanted threads.

Kate Winslet’s suit, Twiggy’s jeans, and boxer Ricky Hatton’s favorite football shirt are some of the celebrity clothes that have been cut up and customized by young volunteers to create Fashion Favours, a project that aims to highlight the issues surrounding throwaway clothing.

The items that have been created will be auctioned on www.fashionfavours.com, and will also be part of a huge fashion show being held in London on World AIDS Day on December 1. Proceeds from the auction and the show will go to Body and Soul, a charity that works with young people affected by HIV in the UK.
