Daughtry To Donate Portion Of Tour Proceeds To Charity

Rockers Daughtry have announced the first leg of their upcoming tour in support of the multi-platinum selling rock band’s third album, Break The Spell (19 Recordings/RCA Records). Tickets go on sale over the next two weeks beginning Friday, January 20th, with some of the proceeds going to charity.

Daughtry’s “Break The Spell Tour” will begin its first leg on March 20 in Buffalo, NY and continue through April 30 when it concludes in New York, NY. Singer Chris Daughtry, guitarists Josh Steely and Brian Craddock, bassist Josh Paul and drummer Robin Diaz are excited to bring their bigger than life show into theaters across the country to provide an intimate experience for fans.

Katharine McPhee Wants To Eradicate Malaria

Singer/actress Katharine McPhee has become a spokesperson for Malaria No More, an organization that works in partnership with various NGOs, corporations, individuals and charities on its mission to “end deaths due to malaria”.

Although death due to malaria is at an all time low according to the WHO World Malaria Report that came out in December (which summarizes data for 2010), a lack of funding could reverse this progress. Only five years away from the Millennium Development Goals deadline, 655,000 people still died from malaria in 2010.

“There remains a misconception about what [malaria] actually is and that it’s entirely preventable,” McPhee told USA TODAY. “What the message needs to be is that we can get rid of this. A 10-dollar donation for a mosquito net helps. It’s the simplest thing you can do. You can leave it up to MNM to ensure that the nets are really getting to the actual people in Africa.”

Following his charity trip to West Africa, David Arquette has launched a special campaign to raise money for Malaria No More.

“This year, 40 days before my 40th birthday, I traveled to Senegal in West Africa with Malaria No More to learn about malaria- a preventable and treatable disease that kills a child every 45 seconds. World Malaria Day was celebrated around the planet on Sunday, April 25, and actor Jeremy Piven helped the cause by taking part in a special baseball game in Chicago.

The game saw the Chicago White Sox take on the Seattle Mariners in a closely fought match delayed by rain. The first pitch was thrown by Piven, and the national anthem was led by American Idol finalist Elliot Yamin. Jeremy joined Malaria No More in asking fans throughout the stadium to text “NET” to 85944 to donate a $10 mosquito net that can help a family in Africa protect themselves from malaria.

World Malaria Day is not the only cause being supported by the White Sox this year. On Saturday, May 8, members of the White Sox Volunteer Corps will assist in restoration work at a Perspectives Charter School in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side and the Little Village Boys & Girls Club in Chicago’s South Lawndale/Little Village neighborhood – both located near U.S. Cellular Field. Idol Gives Back rocked television sets across the US last night to raise funds for charity, with a show that saw performances by Elton John and Alicia Keys, as well as the departure of another contestant.

American Idol contestant Tim Urban was voted off the special edition of the show that has already raised more than $15 million for charities such as the Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Save the Children, the United Nations Foundation and Malaria No More.

Last year, Ashton Kutcher and CNN raced to be the first to get to one million followers on Twitter. Kutcher said that if he got to one million first, he would pay for 10,000 malaria nets for Malaria No More.

He did win, and he’s keeping his promise.

On World Malaria Day 2009, the most retweeted message on Twitter was: “Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = www.MalariaNoMore.org.” Thanks to this, almost 90,000 nets will be distributed in the Senegalese towns of Seraya and Velingara.

Andy Murray Sells Used Shirts For Malaria No More

Tennis player Andy Murray is selling old match shirts to raise pounds for the charity Malaria No More.

Ranked number four in the world, and recently named British player of the year, Murray plans to sell 100 of his Fred Perry shirts for £15 each. For every shirt sold, Malaria No More will buy three mosquito nets to prevent African children from getting the disease.

The sale starts December 21 on www.andymurray.com. The shirts, each worn by Murray at some point, will be sold on a first come first served basis.

British Celebrity Show Benefits Malaria No More

Malaria No More has revealed that it will be the sole benefactor of the current season of “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here” screening on the UK’s ITV.

The show features a group of celebrities as they try to survive living in the Australian jungle, and the new season includes famous faces such as former model and singer Samantha Fox and Dynasty star George Hamilton. David Beckham Stars In New Malaria Commercial

David Beckham is to front a new advert to highlight the urgent need for mosquito nets to help prevent the spread of malaria during the lead-up to this year’s Champions League final.

“It’s truly incredible to think we can stop this killer disease forever and it’s such a simple ask, for less than the cost of a football you can protect a family from dying,” said Beckham. “I urge the UK public to get behind the Malaria No More UK campaign to buy a net, save a life and make malaria no more.”

The ad – which shows the football legend kicking a penalty into a goal with no net – aims to raise awareness of the disease and encourage people to donate to the charity. English Stars Invade Hollywood For Britweek

A host of British stars – and former British prime minister Tony Blair – invaded Hollywood last week for an event to raise awareness and money for Malaria No More.

Britweek 2009 kicked off on April 21 with a dinner attended by celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Nigel Lythgoe and Ryan Seacrest, who donated $100,000 to the charity.
