Lisa Snowdon Completes Charity Parachute Jump

Model and TV and radio presenter Lisa Snowdon has completed her first parachute jump for charity – with the support of former boyfriend George Clooney.

Snowdon jumped from 13,000 feet to raise money for the Help A London Child scheme and the Shooting Star Hospice earlier this week. Last week, Look To The Stars revealed that George Clooney had donated $19,000 to the initiative.

“What a feeling,” said Snowdon. "When I got to the skydiving centre I was really nervous, it looked so high up. I don’t think I realized how high it was. My nerves were building when we went up in the plane and I felt really sick – it seemed to take forever to get up there. When we got up to 13,000ft the red light went on, then the yellow light which means it’s time to go and I freaked out.

“I had my legs dangling out of the plane and it felt so unnatural then suddenly we were out. We did this crazy back double somersault and I could see the bottom of the plane, it was the most surreal thing I’ve ever done. It happened so quickly I didn’t worry about the parachute. The freefalling was wild, it was just brilliant.”

Snowdon also took part in last week’s BGC Charity Day, which raised money for charities such as Barnardo’s, Breast Cancer Care, Help for Heroes and The Variety Club.

Peaches Geldof Gets Second-Hand Makeover

Celebrity Peaches Geldof – known for her sense of style and love of labels – has been given a makeover with a difference from a group of elderly women who work in second-hand clothing stores.

With the help of fashion expert Mary Portas – who is making a documentary on second-hand stores for BBC2 – the group of fashion-conscious grannies decked the young socialite (and daughter of Bob Geldof) in a vintage, fifties-style red dress at their stall backstage at London Fashion Week. Portas believes that charity shops will be relied on more during the recession, and she has spent time filming in shops for Save the Children, Barnardo’s and many other charities for her new series.

“I brought my style volunteers up to London Fashion Week to give a message to the fashion world that charity shopping is not just great for the environment and for a good cause,” she said. “These are places where you can get unique, fashionable outfits that are on trend and look great.”

The group of charitable pensioners also gave second-hand makeovers to supermodel Erin O’Connor, actress Natalie Press and DJ Jodie Harsh.

Queen Elizabeth Gets Busted At Children's Charity

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, visited one of Britain’s best-known children’s charities last week to unveil a special sculpture.

The wife of Prince Charles attended the unveiling at the Barnardo’s headquarters in Barkingside, Essex, to reveal a bust of Queen Elizabeth and meet with several new celebrity ambassadors for the charity, including former Bond girl Rosamund Pike, Heather Small, Goodness Gracious Me star Nina Wadia, Lynda Bellingham and Andy Serkis’ wife, actress Lorraine Ashbourne.

The Duchess, who became president of the organization in December 2007, also toured the charity’s campus – which once housed 1,300 young girls in 64 cottages at Dr Barnardo’s Girls’ Village Home – and met with staff.

The organization was set up in 1867 by Thomas Barnardo to help children, young people and their families over the long term to overcome the most severe disadvantages – problems like abuse, homelessness and poverty – and to tackle the challenges of disability. By the time he died in 1905, the organization had grown to run 96 homes and care for over 8,000 children. Today, over 110,000 children benefit from the organization’s help.

Stars Become Brokers For BGC Charity Day

BGC will hold its 4th Annual Global Charity Day on Thursday 11th September.

Consistent with its theme, “Working Globally – Giving Locally”, BGC’s offices around the world will raise money for charity as they commemorate September 11 by reaching out to help others.

In New York, London, Paris, Sydney and Hong Kong, celebrities from the worlds of music, stage, screen and sport will join the company’s brokers to help raise money for a number of selected charities. All of BGC’s global revenues generated from the day’s trading will be donated to charity.

Events will take place around the globe, with celebrities becoming stock brokers for a day. In New York, stars such as Tony Sirico, Donald Trump, Steve Buscemi, Regis Philbin, Matthew Modine, Leighton Meester, and Scott Gomez will become traders on Wall Street, while in London, Prince Charles will join Kevin Spacey and Jerry Hall in the City to trade on the markets.

Charities that will benefit from this year’s Charity Day will include: Barnardo’s, Breast Cancer Care, Scope, the Jodie Kidd Foundation, the Prince’s Trust, Baby Buggy, the Rainbow Trust, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Variety Club, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Valerie Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, Nordoff-Robbins, and many more.

Artists Create Celebrity Easter Eggs

What do two graffiti-style artists, a tattooist, a fashion designer and a patissier all have in common? They have all joined with British chocolatiers Thornton’s to create special Easter Eggs for an auction benefitting Barnardo’s.

Art and design duo Id-Iom hand-painted the likenesses of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Victoria Beckham, David Beckham, singer Lily Allen, and Prince Harry on their lot, while fashion designer Henry Holland used purple, pink, yellow, green, and turquoise icing to decorate a 1kg chocolate egg. Eric Lanlard, famous for creating Madonna’s wedding cake and Brooklyn Beckham’s first birthday cake, turned his hand from cakes to chocolate for his edible work of art. Tattooist to the stars Louis Molloy, whose impressive client list includes David Beckham, created a design incorporating swallows and bluebirds.

The eggs are currently available on eBay, and will help Barnardo’s continue it’s mission to ensure that all all children and young people are free from poverty, abuse and discrimination.

Goldberg, Keitel Trading for Charity

On Tuesday, September 11th, celebrity guests will join brokerage firm BGC’s third annual Charity Day, assisting the brokers to raise money for good causes. Stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Harvey Keitel, Eli Wallach and Yogi Berra will join brokers in conducting real, live trades. 100% of the commissions raised on the day will go to charities such as Blythedale Children’s Hospital, Books for Kids Foundation, Cancer Research Institute, NARSAD Mental Health Research, Project FIND and the Wounded Warrior Project.

A different celebrity will appear on the trading floor every hour, beginning with the New York Jets’ Freeman McNeil at 9 am, Yogi Berra at 10 and Harriet Harris of Desperate Housewives and Frasier at 11. Next to arrive will be Tony Sirico of the Sopranos, who is raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. He will be joined by several of the brave service men and women supported by the charity.

At one o’clock, Whoopi Goldberg and Eli Wallach are scheduled to arrive. The rest of the afternoon is scheduled to feature Robert Funaro of The Sopranos; former New York Jet Boomer Esiason, Roy White, formerly of the NY Yankees, former NY Mets’ Ed Kranepool and former NY Knicks’ Earl Monroe along with NY Giants’ lineman Grey Ruegamer and the New York Red Bulls’ Joe Vide.

The above celebrities and charities are set to appear at the firm’s downtown New York trading floor, though the Charity Day is a global event. Celebrities appearing in the London and Paris offices include Sir Alex Ferguson, Rory Bremner, Chris Evans, Lisa Faulkner, Jason Flemyng, Nigel Haver, Sir Steve Redgrave, Stephane Pasquier, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Julien Benneteau.

Bond Actor Adds Voice To Children's Charity

James Bond actor Daniel Craig has lent his voice to a new children’s charity campaign launched on Jun 26.

The “Believe in Children” campaign, run by UK charity Barnardo’s aims to change attitudes towards troubled children, and Craig has recorded radio pieces urging people not to give up on difficult youngsters.

In a Barnardo’s poll of over 1,000 adults, a quarter of the respondents thought that disruptive or antisocial children were already beyond help by the time they were just 13. Two-thirds believed that children are more criminal than ever.

Barnardo’s describes these fears as exaggerated, citing a government Crime Survey finding that youth crime had dropped substantially since 1995.

Chief Executive Martin Narey said, “Some children’s behaviour is unacceptable and it has to be challenged. But we must not use that as an excuse to write off a generation.”

The new campaign asserts that all young people can be helped, no matter how difficult, unpleasant or uncooperative.

Barnardo’s says, “The alternative is to dismiss an underclass of children who have nothing to lose and who face nothing more than permanent unemployment, non-achievement and almost inevitably a life of crime.”
