Rachael Ray Supports No Kid Hungry Campaign

To help combat hunger in the classroom, Rachael Ray and her Yum-o! organization are teaming up with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign, a national movement to end childhood hunger in America. In addition to raising awareness about the issue, Yum-o! is donating $100,000 to support Share Our Strength’s work to increase participation in school breakfast programs.

Could you pass a pop quiz on an empty stomach?
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly one in five children in America live in households that can’t consistently put enough food on the table, which means families are not always able to provide their kids with a healthy breakfast before school. Unfortunately, that means that kids are trying to learn on an empty stomach.

Teri Hatcher Creates Bread Art For Charity

Nearly 17 million children in America – almost one in four – struggle with hunger. To help provide hungry children in the United States access to the nutritious meals they need to lead healthy lives, the non-profit Grain Foods Foundation has teamed up with TV’s favorite housewife, Teri Hatcher, and Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit focused on alleviating childhood hunger, to launch the 2011 Bread Art Project.

The campaign engages consumers in an effort to help nourish children in need while simultaneously providing nutrition information.

The Bread Art Project serves as a digital fundraising mechanism for Share Our Strength’s efforts to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. Consumers are encouraged to help fight childhood hunger by visiting breadartproject.com to create a personalized piece of bread art – at no cost – by uploading a favorite drawing or photo, or designing a new one using a digital slice of bread as the canvas. For each piece of approved bread art created from April 1 through June 30, 2011, the Grain Foods Foundation will donate $1 to Share Our Strength.

Jeff Bridges: End Child Hunger In The US By 2015

Academy Award winning actor Jeff Bridges, spokesman for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign, unveiled a state-by-state strategy to end childhood hunger in the United States by 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. this week.

Bridges outlined the No Kid Hungry Campaign’s plan to close the childhood hunger accountability gap by increasing enrollment in federal food and nutrition programs. He also announced the launch of No Kid Hungry Campaigns across America that seek to include governors, mayors, nonprofit partners, those that have experienced hunger, state agency leaders, private funders, and the culinary, business and faith-based communities. Share Our Strength describes the NKH campaign as a non-partisan, cost-effective approach to enlist private funders, public officials, and nonprofit groups to create plans with measurable goals to end childhood hunger at the state and local level.

“Ending hunger is not a mystery,” Bridges says. “By building on successful federal programs like the school breakfast program, our nation’s hungry children can get the food they need to perform well in school and stay healthy. Childhood hunger in America is a hidden epidemic that robs children of the opportunity to grow up healthy and learn well in school, but we see an end in sight. This is a problem we can solve.”

Jennifer Hudson Supports Weight Watchers Charity Campaign

Jennifer Hudson has helped launch an exciting new charity initiative to raise money for the hungry.

For the past two years, Weight Watchers members have shown that they can improve their health while helping those in need. Today, the company announced the launch of the third annual Lose For Good campaign, an initiative that fights hunger both locally and globally by increasing awareness of this important issue and helping to provide access to healthy food for those in need. Between September 5th and October 23rd, as Weight Watchers members and Online subscribers lose weight and participate in other activities, the company will donate up to $1 million to two leading hunger fighting organizations – Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger. Through Lose For Good, Weight Watchers has donated more than $2 million to its charitable partners, and its members have donated over 3.5 million pounds of food to food banks nationwide.

“Almost one in four children in America faces hunger and will endure lifelong consequences as a result of having limited access to nutritious foods,” said Billy Shore, Founder and Executive Director of Share Our Strength. “Weight Watchers is an important ally in our fight to make sure no child in America grows up hungry. We’re thankful for their dedication to our mission and the generous support they provide through the Lose For Good campaign.”

Since 1987, SXSW has produced the internationally recognized Music and Media Conference & Festival and this year they’ve added a new twist.

SXSW, in conjunction with PayPay, have kicked off the first ever social-media smackdown and charity fundraiser at Mashable and Blurb’s SXSW Bash at Six Lounge in Austin.

Corinne Bailey Rae - A Rising Star

If one word can be used to describe the rise to fame of English R&B singer Corinne Bailey Rae, it would be “meteoric”. In the space of two short years, from the release of her debut EP “Like A Star” in October 2005, to three Grammy Award nominations for her eponymous first album in 2007, the 28-year-old soul singer has made a lasting effect on people all over the world. And it’s not just fans who are benefiting from the star’s talents. Bailey Rae has quickly proven herself to be one of the most philanthropic and human-minded artists in the industry today.

Born in the English city of Leeds to a West Indian father and a Yorkshire mother, Bailey Rae found her love of music early.

“I started off singing in church,” said the singer, whose voice drips with shades of Billie Holiday. “People always think it must have been a gospel church… but it wasn’t gospel at all. It was just your regular brethren church, very middle class, where we would sing these harmonies every Sunday. It was always my favorite part of the service, the singing.”

Rachael Ray Supports Great American Bake Sale

TV cook Rachael Ray is lending her support to The Great American Bake Sale, an initiative of charity Share Our Strength which works to end childhood hunger.

Speaking on ABC’s “This Week” last week, Ray said, “Imagine what it’s really like to go hungry. And then imagine what that must be like for a small child, how that must make them feel, completely lesser-than in every way; they’re not good enough to get food?”

The campaign mobilizes young and old alike to help end childhood hunger in America by having a bake sale in their community. Proceeds from every bake sale are donated to Share Our Strength and in turn granted to hunger relief organizations that work to end childhood hunger. Since 2003, over $3 million has been raised and over 1 million people have participated — baking, selling or buying goods.
