Mikhail Gorbachev Croons For Charity

Former Soviet leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev has recorded and sold a one-of-a-kind album of love songs for charity.

The 78-year-old recorded an album of old Russian romantic ballads to raise money for a charity dedicated to his late wife, Raisa, who died of leukaemia in 1999. The Raisa Gorbachev Foundation is an international non-governmental organization dedicated solely to the control of child cancer. Its primary goal is to eliminate this life-threatening disease for future generations. As a non-profit organization, it is committed to action and acts as a voice for change.

“The disc includes seven of Raisa Maximovna’s favorite romantic songs,” said Gorbachev. “I sang them myself, with Andrei Makarevich [a well known Russian musician] playing the background music.”

The only copy of the album was auctioned at the Foundation’s gala dinner on June 6 for $164,940. The former leader also performed one of the songs at the event.

Annie Lennox To Perform Charity Show At Hampton Court

Annie Lennox is to perform a special concert next week to raise much needed funds for two charities.

The 3rd annual Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala will take place on Saturday, June 6. This year’s gala will be held in a Spiegeltent, in the grounds of Hampton Court with 350 guests. The aim is to raise much needed funds for two charities – The Raisa Gorbachev Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The money donated through the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation – founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev following the death of his wife Raisa from leukaemia in 1999 – gives hundreds of children suffering from cancer in Russia direct access to the best possible treatment. Marie Curie Nurses provide free nursing care to cancer patients and those with other terminal illnesses in their own homes and also run 10 hospices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and two centres for palliative care research and the world-renowned Marie Curie Research Institute, which investigates the causes and treatments of cancer.

Orlando And Bono Attend Gorbachev Gala

Former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev hosted a glittering charity gala at Hampton Court on Saturday night that saw a stunning array of celebrities show up to support the fight against cancer in children.

Kate Beckinsale, Orlando Bloom, Tracey Emin, Petra Nemcova, Kevin Spacey and Joan Collins were just some of the stars that turned out for the dinner, auction and dance to raise money for the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation – a charity established by Mr Gorbachev following the death of his wife in 1999.

A three course dinner was followed by an impressive selection of items up for auction, including a private night at Annabel’s nightclub in Mayfair for 160 people, clothes from designer Giles Deacon, a new Bentley Continental Flying Spur, and a private high-speed drive with British Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton.

This was followed by a moving speech made by Hugh Grant, whose mother died from cancer in 2001, and a special performance from Bono.

“We are delighted Hugh is so involved this year,” said one of the organizers. “He is a very important part of the charity. For him to stand up and talk about his late mother is very special. It’s a night where people really do go to incredible lengths to raise money for an amazingly worthwhile charity.”

Last year’s Gala was also an exciting event.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev hosted a gala dinner last weekend to raise money for the cancer charity he established in memory of his wife.

Raisa Gorbachev died of leukemia in 1999, and the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation aims to create a specialist hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia, that will provide high-quality medical care to children with cancer.

The gala event at Hampton Court Palace was attended by Bob Geldof, former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, actors Ralph Fiennes, Kim Cattrall and Anna Friel, singer Rod Stewart, authors Tom Wolfe and JK Rowling and supermodel Elle Macpherson.
