Jackie Chan Attends Dragon's Heart Summer Camp

Jackie Chan was in Beijing on September 3 for the closing ceremony of the first Dragon’s Heart Summer Camp.

The camp was part of Jackie’s Dragon’s Heart Charity, which aids children in poverty-stricken areas in China. Jackie watched as children at the camp sang and danced for him, then talked to them about leading a charitable life.

From Jackie’s website: "When Jackie Chan isn’t making movies, he is very busy working to help other people, especially children. Jackie has been involved in charity work for 20 years, establishing his Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988. In October of 2004, Jackie founded the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help children and the elderly in poor and remote areas of China. The Dragon’s Heart Foundation builds schools in these remote areas and also gives aid to the elderly and handicapped. In the past four years, Jackie has taken many trips to remote areas of China to bring supplies and most of all to bring love and support to poor children and the elderly.

Jackie Chan's Charity Work Featured In Forbes Asia

Jackie Chan is the subject of a fantastic article on celebrity charity giving in Forbes Asia Magazine.

“Fame has transformed Chan into one of Asia’s premier philanthropists,” reads the article, by Ron Gluckman. "Others may give more or get more attention, but probably nobody works harder for more causes than Chan. ‘Every time we ask him to do an event, he agrees without any question,’ says Anthony Lau, director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Chan has been the face of everything from no-smoking campaigns to cleanup efforts. Lau recalls requesting the star’s appearance in Japan two years ago. Chan was working in remote China but flew 30 hours straight to the event. “The next day, he made the journey back—another 30 hours.”

“Chan has always regretted his lack of a formal education. So when he launched the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988, it offered scholarships and other help to young people. Over the years the scope has broadened to include medical services, help for the poor and quick responses to natural disasters. After China’s Sichuan earthquake he donated more than $1.3 million to relief. His impact is multiplied when he lends his name and puts his boundless energy behind a cause.

Jackie Chan's Fans Donate To Charity Initiative

Fans of Jackie Chan have donated over US$2,600 in the last month to the action star’s Build A School For A Dollar initiative.

According to his website: "When Jackie Chan isn’t making movies, he is very busy working to help other people, especially children. There are many children who don’t have enough money to go to school and Jackie wants to help them get an education. He uses money collected through the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help the children. But do you wonder where Dragon’s Heart gets donations from? They get money from people like you; people who just want to help kids who want to go to school. Jackie collects the money and then builds the schools! So far the Foundation has built twenty-one schools and elderly residences in Guizhou, Xichang, Shandong, Erdos, Changchun, and Yanbian! After the May 12, 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, Jackie promised to use money from the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help rebuild schools in the devastated areas.

“In August, 2006 when Jackie came back from a Dragon’s Heart charity mission to Guizhou, China, he thought of a fun way for you to help poor children go to school. The project is called Build a School For a Dollar. You may wonder how anyone – even Jackie – could build a whole school for a dollar. Of course no one can. But if you put your dollar together with someone else’s dollar and a whole bunch of other dollars, you could have enough money to build a school! And that’s our plan. As an added bonus, Jackie has promised to match your donation. That means if you donate a dollar, Jackie will donate a dollar. If you donate ten dollars, Jackie will donate ten dollars!”

Jackie Chan has launched a great new competition for budding young artists as part of a new charity initiative.

Jackie Chan Visits Mudslide Victims

Following his recent donation of US$148,000 to victims of China’s mudslide victims, Jackie Chan has visited Zhouqu to lend a hand to those in need.

“Zhouqu County is situated in the northern part of Gannan Tibetian Autonomous Prefecture which is in the southern part of Gansu Province,” writes the action star on his official blog. "It is located on the boundary of Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu Provinces.

“Before we reached Wudou, we saw all the houses that were destroyed by the mudslide and a lot of temporary tents set up on the side of the road. Even though it was getting dark, we still stopped, got out of the car and had a look.

Jackie Chan Donates To Mudslide Relief

Jackie Chan marked his appearance at the Shanghai World Expo last week by donating 1 million RMB (US$148,000) to victims of a recent disaster in China.

“Due to the recent mudslide in Zhouqu, China, I went with my Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to donate 1 million RMB and sing a song of encouragement,” wrote the star. “Unlike the Yushu earthquake disaster, this time I couldn’t fly into the city and I couldn’t drive either, so there was no way to get there. Instead I’m donating money first to see if I can help later on. I will try my best to go there when I can.”

The deadly mudslide struck on August 8, following heavy rain. Over 1000 people died in the disaster.

Jackie Chan Brings Water To Drought Areas

Earlier this month, Jackie Chan traveled to Tongren in the Guizhou province of China to bring much-needed water and supplies to the drought stricken area. He has now blogged about the experience.

“Along with my team (The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation), I flew to TongRen City, Guizhou Province in the Tujia County,” writes Jackie in the blog. "We brought 48,000 bottles of water to their people. My team told me that the GDP is the lowest in the country and up in the mountains where the people lived, they were facing serious water shortages.

“Along the way, I learned that the water was difficult to store and that 97% of the farmland were in the mountains. In the summer’s dry season, villagers have to walk 10 miles down the mountain just to collect two bottles of water. So in the car up to the mountain, I could see the roof of many houses, used as a reservoir for water. However, it was covered with moss and there was no filter. They used it to wash their clothes, their plates, and even to drink.”

Jackie Chan Makes Charity Trip To Earthquake Victims In China

Jackie Chan has made a charity trip to Qinghai, China, to bring supplies to victims of the devastating earthquake last week that has claimed over 1,484 lives and left over 12,000 injured.

“I’m deeply grateful to China Eastern Airlines for providing an airbus A320 plane for us to ship our relief supplies, and giving us the green light to fly into the area so we could bring all the supplies in on time,” blogged the star. "Even though we didn’t take any personal luggage with us, the cargo compartment of the plane was filled with relief supplies yet we still couldn’t fit all the supplies onto the plane.

“We knew that the disaster area were in desperate need of warm clothing and blankets. Before I boarded the plane today, a friend of mine sent over several bags of warm clothing but we couldn’t load it into the cargo compartment, so each of my disciples hand-carried two bags onto the plane.

Jackie Chan Named In Top Charity Givers List

LookToTheStars.org congratulates Jackie Chan for being named as one of the most philanthropic people in Asia.

The star has been named as one of the 48 most philanthropic people by Forbes Asia for his work with the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation – founded in 1988 to help young people in a variety of worthy causes, including medical services, aid to victims of natural disaster or illness, scholarships and youth activities – and the Dragon’s Heart Charity, which strives to meet the needs of poverty-stricken children and the elderly in the hardest-to-reach areas of the immense country. Chan has made several trips to villages in these remote locations, bringing warm clothing, wheelchairs and school supplies, and helping to build schools.

LookToTheStars.org talked to Jackie in 2007 about his work with the charities: “I’m very lucky to be able to help children who are suffering the the world. Since I am Ambassador for UNICEF and UNAIDS, I am able to help raise interest in the problems that children face. Plus I am involved with my own charities here in Asia – the Dragon’s Heart Charity and the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation. There are so many problems for children! Sometimes I feel that I just can’t do enough for them – as soon as I solve the problem of one group, I notice that another group is suffering. I try, but it’s never enough.”

Jackie Chan Jets Into China For Charity

Action star Jackie Chan has been in New Mexico lately filming his latest film, The Spy Next Door. But he took time off last week to do some charity work back in China.

The star flew to Hong Kong last weekend to launch a new Hermes scarf, the sales of which will raise money for the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation. The idea for the scarf first came when Chan was making Rush Hour 3 in Paris and met the CEO of Hermes.

“It took almost two years from the time we had that conversation until now when it’s all ready,” said Chan. “I always thought it was so easy to make a scarf, but then I realized that there are so many steps involved; finally this year it was finished. It was supposed to be released in time for the Olympics, but it was delayed. Hermes only made 400 of these Les Tigreaux scarves.”

Jackie Chan Thanked By UNICEF

Back in July, Look To The Stars reported on Jackie Chan’s visit to East Timor to spread a message of non-violence to the country’s youth. As a direct result of the trip, two of Timor-Leste’s largest youth gangs have signed a peace agreement and vowed not to fight anymore.

The action star received a letter from UNICEF – who organized his visit – earlier this month thanking him for his participation and updating him on recent developments in the country.

“I honestly felt very happy when I received this piece of news,” said Chan “The influence I have on other people actually had some effect! Why can’t we all live together in peace? At the moment there are a lot of people who are working hard for the human race so that we can have better health and better living conditions. Researchers are looking for ways to cure cancer, people who are fighting against global warming and working to protect our environment; they only hope for humans to have a better tomorrow, so why are people still fighting and killing for advantages or benefits?”

Jackie Chan Receives UNICEF Award

Action star Jackie Chan has received a special UNICEF award for his work with children.

Chan was a guest at a UNICEF reception held in China on August 9, where awards were presented to UNICEF supporting partners and goodwill ambassadors who have aided the organization’s efforts to help children all over the world. The event – called Champions for Children – served two purposes: to advocate for vulnerable children and to thank all of UNICEF’s partners, including the Chinese government, for their tireless work.

Attendees at the function listened to talks from Chan and world reknowned pianist Lang Lang, as well as the words of young survivors from the Sichuan earthquake.

Exclusive Interview: Jackie Chan Talks To Look To The Stars

One of the greatest things about our work at Look To The Stars is the chance to ‘discover’ the wonderful things that celebrities do everyday. In doing so, we often find that our idols are true heroes. This is especially true of action hero Jackie Chan, a legend of Hong Kong cinema and star of the three “Rush Hour” movies. Chan volunteers his time to help many charities, the closest to his heart being the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, an organization that has helped thousands of people since he started it in 1988.

Jackie Chan is a great example of someone who always uses his star power to help others. This can best be seen in his Build a School for a Dollar
program, and in his plea to advertisers to

Jet Li and Jackie Chan Join Forces to Aid Earthquake Victims

Action star Jet Li has allocated 100,000 Yuan (over $13,000) through his charity, the One Foundation, to boost relief efforts following the earthquake that struck the Yunnan province of China on June 3rd. Jackie Chan matched the allocation a day later.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake damaged nearly 250,000 houses, affecting half a million residents, and also resulted in injuries and deaths.

Jet Li has now invited Jackie Chan to become the honorary director-general of his One Foundation for two years, and Chan has accepted. Charity is not new to Jackie Chan; in 1988, he created the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to provide scholarships to young people in Hong Kong. The scope of his Foundation has since widened, to include providing medical services and aid to victims of disasters.

Jackie Chan Auctions Watch for Charity

Jackie Chan has taken on the role of ambassador for the children’s charity Camp Quality, and in September helped raise nearly $23,000 for them at the Hong Kong premiere of Rob-B-Hood.

Nearly the entire cast of the film attended the event, and Jackie brought attention and funds to the charity by auctioning off a limited edition IWC Dragon watch.

Camp Quality is an international organization which offers support for children suffering from cancer by making it possible for them to get out of hospitals and enjoy themselves in an outdoor environment.

Jackie Chan Reveals Charity Will

While at a press conference to raise awareness of the endangered South China tiger, Jackie Chan announced that he has bequeathed half of his fortune to charity.

“I admire the efforts by Buffett and Gates to help those in need a lot,” Chan said. “Like Buffett and Gates, I want to help people, but I don’t have as much money as they do.”

The action hero founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988, and it is this charity that will benefit from the will. Originally started to help needy children, the organization has since branched out to help victims of natural disasters, provide special medical care, and support the performing arts.
