Stand Up To Cancer: Sherry Lansing Tells Us How And Why

Sherry Lansing was the chair of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures from 1992 to 2005, where she oversaw the release of more than 200 films including Academy Award winners Forrest Gump (1994), Braveheart (1995), and the highest grossing movie of all time, Titanic (1997).

A pioneering studio executive, Lansing is the first woman in the film industry to oversee all aspects of a studio’s motion picture production. She is currently involved with Stand Up To Cancer, a non-profit organization/website/TV special that hopes to enable cutting-edge research aimed at finding a cure to all types of cancer. Stars from film, television, sports, journalism and music will come together for the September 5th primetime television event to raise funds for cancer research, and it will feature live performances as well as filmed content giving viewers insight into cancer.

Look To The Stars recently caught up with Sherry Lansing to find out more about Stand Up To Cancer and its goals.

Tell us how Stand Up To Cancer started.

SU2C got started when a group of us wanted to do something big for cancer research, so we dreamed… and, as in Hollywood, we dreamed BIG. We dreamed of the networks giving us a simultaneous commercial free telecast in an attempt to educate people about prevention, create awareness, and raise funds for cancer research.

All of us were involved in working in various ways to help scientists stop cancer, focusing on different areas of the disease, but we put our competitive interests aside to create Stand Up To Cancer, just like how the Big 3 networks [NBC, ABC, and CBS] will come together under the same tent to air our September 5th show.

We are patient advocates, we have all been touched personally by cancer, and we want it to end. I lost my mother to cancer, but since then I see it’s become an epidemic, everyday I pick up the telephone and hear of someone else who has been struck by this disease. I just want to help. I hate cancer. I just don’t want it to exist.

What sets SU2C apart from other cancer research fundraisers?

We are raising money for dream teams of researchers and scientists. Regretfully, cancer foundations, scientists, and researchers have all competed with each other for funding due to lack of money and didn’t share research because of intellectual property, which in essence held back breakthroughs. Instead, we are bringing together scientists from all the around the world to form dream teams that will be funded and who will work together in a collaborative way. We’re identifying the most promising opportunities for success and leveraging our resources and knowledge to drive breakthroughs and find cures.

Our show is just the beginning. This is a movement, much like what Al Gore did with An Inconvenient Truth, we hope to be the tipping point for cancer, and we hope cancer will be on the front page much like the economy and the War in Iraq.

There is quite a celebrity-studded Public Service Announcement up on your site. How did you get so many celebrities on board with this cause? Why do you think so many celebrities choose to become advocates for cancer research?

Luckily it hasn’t been hard getting celebrity involvement. Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way and they want to stand up, just like everyone else.

What else are celebrities doing to help this cause?

They are helping in many ways by creating PSAs, donating their time, providing website content, participating in our show – answering phones, performing on air, honoring people with cancer.

The MLB was our first major donor, they gave 10 million dollars and we just launched with them a PSA that Jessica Biel did for us about how to txt to donate, which will be shown throughout the baseball season at stadiums.

I’m very grateful that it hasn’t been hard getting talent, the only thing limiting is that we only have an hour show.

Can you tell us who any of the show’s performers or phone operators will be?

We are still finalizing this, but the names will be big. We already have advocates like Lance Armstrong and Katie Couric... and that’s just the beginning.

How can people get involved with SU2C?

Everyone can be involved, from a company to a third grade kid. People can stand up now by joining teams to fundraise online, email congress to request funding for cancer research, or for just a $1 donation launch a star in memory or dedication to someone with cancer in The Constellation on our site.

In your estimation, how will SU2C contribute to the overall progress of cancer research?

In many ways I think we can make an incredible change. This is the beginning of a movement, and when people start to create a movement – civil rights, women’s rights, the green movement – it’s going to be impactful. This show is unprecedented – except for 9/11, the networks have not banded together like this over a cause, never for a disease. If this constituency is mad as hell and not going to take it anymore that one out of two men and one out of three women will get cancer in their lifetimes – and as a result people become aware of ways to prevent cancer – then that alone will change things tremendously by just getting people to talk about it and wanting the government to fund research.

We’ve never been so close to a cure thanks to technology and science, and we want to create a people’s movement to change their lifestyles, to go out and get the tests needed to catch the disease in time and to also raise money to give scientists what they need to continue the cause. All the tumblers are in place… it all starts with the people.

Jet Li Attends Earthquake Relief Banquet

Action star Jet Li attended a charity banquet in China last week to raise money for the victims of the devastating Sichuan earthquake that struck in May.

Held in the glitzy Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Beijing, the evening was sponsored by Swiss watchmaker DeWitt and Jet Li’s One Foundation, an organization the star established after the 2004 Asian tsunami to help victims of natural disasters. Legendary film director John Woo and the cast of his upcoming blockbuster film Red Cliff – including Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro – also attended the banquet.

Li has spent the last few months campaigning for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake, and is declining all movie roles in 2008 to focus on his charity work.

A documentary about the disaster relief efforts of the One Foundation was shown during the banquet, after which Jet Li stated that the One Foundation had launched a plan for post-quake reconstruction. He called on everyone to donate one yuan per month to help the victims.

The evening raised 1 million yuan (US$147,000) for the Chinese Red Cross.

Also in Asia recently, Taiwanese pop singer Keung Hang has launched a new charity to help students, in association with the Shanghai Charity Foundation.

The new fund – Traces of Love – will help disadvantaged primary and middle school students, as well as students who suffer from serious diseases in China.

The first donation – 500,000 yuan (US$71,428) – was provided by Daphne Shoes.

“I think I should do something for them, but my own power is not strong enough to help all the needy students,” said Keung. “So I want to urge more people to help.”

The singer plans to expand the fund to include secondary and college students as more donations roll in.

Wanted: Blood Of NASCAR Fans

The American Red Cross has teamed up with 3M and Roush Fenway Racing to launch Red Cross Racing, a campaign that aims to encourage NASCAR fans to donate blood.

Two-time NASCAR champion Greg Biffle – a Red Cross blood donar and member of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet – is at the forefront of the new campaign, and will wear a special Red Cross fire suit at the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Speedway on November 9.

“I’m proud to be an American Red Cross blood donor,” said Biffle. “I give blood because it’s easy to do and helps support our community. I hope NASCAR fans across the country will join me this racing season to help save lives, one drive at a time.”

As part of the new campaign, the Red Cross has also launched a new website at www.redcrossracing.com, where race fans earn points every time they participate in a blood drive. Points are redeemable for Red Cross Racing branded items including caps, t-shirts, leather racing jackets and limited edition die-cast cars. All online participants will also be in for the chance to win an all-expense-paid trip for two to the Checker Auto Parts 500.

The next local blood drive will be in Pulaski on July 21 at the Pulaski Recreation Center from noon until 6 pm. Those that donate will receive a free NASCAR lanyard.

Watch out for the Number 16 car that will be appearing throughout the 2008 NASCAR season – it will carry the Red Cross logo for most races, and will be fully adorned with a Red Cross paint scheme by the time it gets to Phoenix.

Chow Yun Fat Sells Photos For Earthquake Relief

Chinese actor Chow Yun Fat has released a book of photographs, with all proceeds going to charity.

Only 1000 copies of Moving Pictures have been produced, and the proceeds will be donated directly to the Hong Kong Red Cross to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. The book includes photos the actor took while working on several films, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Curse of the Golden Flower, and The Children of Huangshi.

“I use my perspective to record things that happen in the film studio, the work of every actor and every crew member,” said the star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. “I think it’s quite fun.”

Chow also said it was his wife’s idea to donate the proceeds of the book to the earthquake victims, and hopes the book helps them get back on their feet. He explained that every little thing helps the victims, and “that everyone has their own way of offering aid and it is the thought and sincerity that counts.”

The book is only available from Louis Vuitton stores in Hong Kong and Paris, and retails for HK$1288 (around US$165).

Kid Rock Raises Eyebrows And Money At Charity Golf Tournament

Detroit rocker Kid Rock hit the green in his home town on Wednesday to take part in the Buick Open Pro-Am golf tournament .

This year’s 50th anniversary tournament saw a host of Detroit’s favorite sons swinging their clubs with the best, including the Red Wing’s Kirk Maltby, Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, and Former Piston Vinnie Johnson, but it was Kid Rock and his pro partner John Daly that drew the crowds to the event.

Dressed in bib overalls and a white T-shirt, the 37 year-old-rocker spent more time signing autographs and searching for balls he sliced into the trees than actually playing golf, but the atmosphere was one of fun and humor.

“I’m a people person,” said Rock. “I love people and being around people. I got [into the entertainment business] to make some money, originally. Little did I know I would end up on a golf course with John Daly and doing all sorts of charity work and going overseas. It’s been great. I’m very humbled and very privileged.”

The tournament raised money for the American Red Cross and the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Greater Flint, as well as the Whalley Children Center, Easter Seals, and the Flint Institute of Music.

Janet Jackson Receives Humanitarian Honor

Superstar Janet Jackson was the recipient of a humanitarian award at an event organized by the Lisa Lopes Foundation on Saturday night.

Every year the charity honors an artist that has excelled in community and humanitarian efforts, and this year the presentation was made at the 13th Annual Hot 107.9 FM Birthday Bash at Phillips Stadium in Atlanta. Jackson was unable to attend the event, but accepted the award via a video. Other attendees included Ludacris and Usher, both of whom were past recipients of the award.

Jackson received the honor for her ability to create a global unification through her music and for her community efforts. She has provided global assistance to organizations which focus on children, hunger, conservation and animals, and after the tragic 911 attacks she supported the victims and families affected by the events at both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon through donations to the ClearChannel.com Relief Fund. She also aided the victims of the Tsunami disaster via the American Red Cross. Besides her support toward the on-going efforts of the Lisa Lopes Foundation, she also supports the Orca Network and Second Harvest.

“Instead of focusing on the mistakes our peers in the music industry make, the Lisa Lopes Award highlights their accomplishments in music and in giving back to the community,” said Ronald Lopes, Executive Director of the Lisa Lopes Foundation. “It’s our way of saying thank you. Your work has not gone unnoticed.”

Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, a member of R&B group TLC, was killed in a car accident in 2002. The Lisa Lopes Foundation was established in 2003 by Lisa’s mother, Wanda Lopes-Colemon, her brother Ronald Lopes and family friend Anashay Murphy. The Foundation was inspired by Lisa’s dream of building a children’s home on land she purchased in Honduras, now the site of Lisa’s Home of Love, a 10,000 sq. ft. residential facility. The orphanage includes a dental clinic, free healthcare, and on-site free schooling, which is open to children throughout the community who have no school to attend.

The mission of The Lisa Lopes Foundation is to provide access to basic health, education, self-awareness and recreational programs to children living in low-income communities within the United States and underdeveloped communities within Central America. The Foundation works to transform communities by establishing and supporting high quality community based programs.

Black Eyed Peas Gig Raises Cash For Earthquake Victims

The Black Eyed Peas have raised over $870,000 at a benefit show in Shanghai for victims of the Chinese earthquake.

The show, held on Tuesday night, was originally intended as a promotional event for beverage companies Chivas Brothers and Pernod Ricard China, but became a benefit in the aftermath of the May 12 earthquake that has killed more than 69,000 people in the country’s Sichuan region. Band members apl.de.ap, will.i.am, Taboo, and Fergie also donated a selection of personal items – including a guitar – to an auction held before the concert.

“We fell in love with China and the Chinese people when we visited here before,” said will.i.am. “So [we] wanted to use tonight to do all we could to help the relief effort in the aftermath of the earthquake.”

The band played to 700 invited guests, and the proceeds will be added to $300,000 already donated to the Chinese Red Cross by Pernod Ricard.

Eric Clapton Donates Paintings To Red Cross Shop

Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton donated over 20 paintings to a sale in Britain last week to raise money for the Red Cross.

The Chelsea Red Cross charity shop – famous for its stock of vintage and designer clothes – has held many successful sale events in the past, although not as successful as this one: over $7,800 was raised.

“The sale was a huge success,” said Cathy Shimmell, store manager. “My wonderful customers and other kind people have been so generous in donating art works to support the Red Cross. I’m very grateful to Eric Clapton, who donated 23 pieces of art work, which turned out to be very popular.”

Taylor Swift Gives Her Vote To Charity

Country music sensation Taylor Swift is donating all of the proceeds from her merchandise sales at this weekend’s Country Music Festival in Nashville to charity.

The 18-year-old singer will be gifting her profits to the Red Cross, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Nashville Area Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in Middle Tennessee and a portion to benefit the National American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The singer is also trying to encourage more young people to vote and exercise their rights.

“I’ve been trying to do my research more,” she told The Tennessean. “Before you have the ability to vote, you just kind of support who your parents support. I’ve had more interest in figuring out who believes in what, because every vote counts. I’m not going to talk about politics, because it’s not my specialty. I know as much as your average 18-year-old who wants to know the general issues… but I’m not going to go out there and try to influence thousands of people because I have a music career and a platform to say things publicly. I don’t think because you do have the platform to say things publicly that you necessarily should.”

Swift is certainly no stranger to charitable acts. Last year she launched a campaign to protect children from online predators, and earlier this year she donated the pink Chevy pick-up truck given to her by her record label to children’s charity, the Victory Junction Gang.

Jet Li Takes Action For Earthquake Survivors

Following the devastating earthquake in China earlier this month, the 5.12 Sichuan Earthquake Disaster Relief Command has been formally set up by action star Jet Li in Chengdu.

Li has established the relief effort with his One Foundation, a charity he set up to help those affected by natural disasters. The initiative aims to conduct long-term reconstruction work, and the Foundation has sent in three teams to organize and train volunteers in association with the Red Cross Society of China.

“We have deployed proper arrangements and the third batch of supplies will arrive tomorrow,” said Li. “A One Foundation Family will be built up in Jiangyou county and other places to help students in more than 130 schools resume classes.”

Jet Li also expressed that One Foundation’s post disaster work will focus on sponsoring and supporting the elderly, orphans, and the disabled.

Yao Ming Steps Up Donation for Disaster Relief

NBA player and Rockets Center Yao Ming has filmed several Public Service Announcements in conjunction with the Red Cross to appeal to fans to help with earthquake relief in his native China after the devastating 7.8 magnitude struck the country and killed thousands of people.

The PSAs were filmed in both English and Mandarin Chinese. The English version will run during the NBA Playoffs television broadcasts, and the Mandarin Chinese will run on NBA Playoffs broadcasts in China.

NBA Senior VP/Community & Player Programs Kathy Behrens: “It is a straightforward appeal to direct people to the Red Cross. His personal appeal will be the tone.”

And Yao isn’t just asking for help, he’s already reached into his own pockets and donated close to $72,000 for the cause. That is, until there was a minor backlash against the basketball star, who earned close to $55M last year: “A bit stingy isn’t it?” wrote one fan.

“This is only the first contribution from Yao,” said Lu Hao, the head of Yao’s management team in Beijing. “He will follow it up when he returns to the country.”

But before Ming had a chance to return to China, Internet criticism of his ‘small’ donation allegedly forced him to up his donation to about $250,000 later in the week, according to media reports.

Ming is well known for his generosity, always illustrating that his heart is as big as his 7’6” physique. Last year, for example, Ming’s charitable efforts raised more than a million dollars for under-privileged Chinese children, and he also spent countless hours toward helping stage the 2007 Special Olympics in his home city of Shanghai.

The Red Cross Society of China has opened several bank accounts and hotlines to receive donations for the victims of the quake. Donations to help survivors can also be made via the American Red Cross.

Red Cross Honours Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox will receive the British Red Cross’ Services to Humanity Award, given each year to honour outstanding humanitarian work. Lennox’s efforts to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS through music, video and campaigning throughout her career has earned her this recognition.

On June 12, after Lennox receives the award, she will perform at The Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair Royal Charity Gala Evening, a fund raising event to benefit the Red Cross. A charity auction for victims of the Darfur crisis will also take place, with the goal of raising at least half a million pounds (approx $970,000).

Lennox’s regular performances benefit a variety of causes, such as the environment, sustainable organic farming, human health, disaster relief, fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, human rights, poverty, homelessness and much more.

Maria Shammas, International Fundraising Chair for the British Red Cross, said, “Ms. Lennox’s ability to raise awareness through her music and to use her international profile for the benefit of others is an example to us all. We are delighted that Annie Lennox will be bestowed this honour.”

Malaria No More Fights A Forgotten Killer

When people think of health and welfare in Africa, they think of AIDS, famine, poverty, and hundreds of other killers that bring death and hardship to the continent. But they hardly ever think of malaria. “It’s not a problem anymore,” they say. “We’ve been treating it for over 100 years…”

And yet it is still a problem – a HUGE problem.

The disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, causes a drawn-out and painful death. It destroys red blood cells and clogs the tiny capillaries that carry blood to the brain and other organs – a horrible way to die in anyone’s books. And it is killing as you read this – an African child dies of the disease every 30 seconds. That’s 3,000 children a day… over 1 million a year. In addition to the devastating human toll, the African economy loses over $12 billion in productivity due to the disease annually.

Malaria No More is an organization with one simple mission: to stop all malaria deaths. Established in 2006 at the first-ever White House Summit on Malaria, the organization uses contributions from the public to fund the provision of bed nets, sprays, anti-malaria drugs, education, and also the development of a vaccine to achieve its aim. Founded by a group of organizations such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, United Way, Millennium Promise, the Global Fund, the United Nations Foundation, and the Global Business Coalition, Malaria No More also supports the President’s Malaria Initiative, a $1.2 billion, 5 year campaign launched by President Bush in 2005 to cut malaria deaths in Africa by 50%.

Malaria No More recently benefited from Idol Gives Back, the special American Idol show that raised money for a variety of organizations both in America and overseas. It is still too early to know exactly how much Malaria No More will get of the $60 million raised by this year’s show, but the music extravaganza donated $9 million to the organization in 2007, and another $8 million to other malaria-related causes. Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Idol judge Simon Cowell, along with Idol performers, have visited Africa and seen the devastation of the disease, and last month 2007 Idol winner Jordin Sparks joined President Bush in Ghana to highlight malaria control efforts.

“I was shocked to learn of the devastation caused by malaria,” said Sparks. “It’s incredible what a difference a simple mosquito net can make in the life of a child.”

The organization, whose spokespeople include David Beckham and Ashley Judd, has also launched an exciting way for schools to join in the fight against malaria and empower students to be active in raising money and saving lives. Stayin’ Alive was created by a group of high school students in Florida, and encourages schools and students to hold fundraising dances. By dedicating a dance, or series of dances, to Malaria No More – and committing to a $1,000 donation from the proceeds – schools everywhere can play a significant role in eradicating malaria.

Malaria No More aims to partner with 10,000 Stayin’ Alive dances throughout America over the next three years. This will provide over $10 million in funds – enough to pay for $1 million bed nets to protect at least 2 million children.

Rascal Flatts Include Red Cross In New Music Video

It has been a big year for Red Cross disaster relief workers in North America, with thousands of people affected by the February tornadoes that ripped through the southern states and severe flooding in the Midwest. And as a way of raising awareness of the work the organization does, a prominent and popular country music band has featured their relief services in a new music video.

Every Day, the latest song from Rascal Flatts’ Still Feels Good album, makes its debut this week, and the video depicts a variety of situations where Red Cross provide emergency assistance to those in need.

“It gives us great pleasure to be able to work with a wonderful organization like the American Red Cross, because of the humanitarian service it provides to this country and around the world.” said Gary LeVox, lead singer of the band.

Rascal Flatts, who recently scooped an accolade for one of their videos at the CMT Country Music Awards, have been members of the Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet since 2004, and have previously taped Public Service Announcements to encourage people to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The band will also receive the 2008 Academy of Country Music Humanitarian Award on May 18 in Las Vegas.

“We’re grateful to the members of Rascal Flatts for highlighting the lifesaving work of our “everyday heroes” – the volunteers and staff who carry out our humanitarian mission,” said Joe Becker, Red Cross Senior Vice President for Disaster Services. “Their compassion and gracious donations of time and talent will go a long way to help those in need.”

Red Cross Announces The 2008 Celebrity Cabinet

The American Red Cross unveiled their 7th annual National Celebrity Cabinet yesterday, February 28, with 15 new members from movies, sports, and television.

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk will join former Beverly Hills 90210 and Dancing With The Stars alum Jennie Garth, Heroes’ Masi Oka, Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, House M.D.’s Lisa Edelstein and Kal Penn, Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, Everyone Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, Hairspray’s Brittany Snow, two-time NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, New York Yankee Robinson Cano, NFL star Matt Leinart, and Life Coach Iyanla Vazant in the 2008 Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, part of a mobilizing force to urge people to perform extraordinary life-saving acts in dire circumstances through the assistance of the Red Cross.

“I am extremely honored to participate in the Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, especially at a time when we have the ability to do so much for people around the world who have endured such tragedies,” said new member Jennie Garth. “The Red Cross brings help and hope to those in need and has done tremendous good for so many different people on a global level. The 47 members of the 2008 National Celebrity Cabinet will be “on-call” to donate their time, skills, passion, and energy to help the Red Cross highlight their important initiatives and response efforts. It will be chaired once again by Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures and member of the Red Cross Board of Govenors.

“This is my sixth year serving as chair for the Celebrity Cabinet,” she said. “It’s an honor to be a part of such a meaningful cause with such talented people.”

The Red Cross has benefited from the involvement of public figures and celebrities since World War I, and over the years actors and artists have played an important role in raising public awareness of Red Cross services nationwide. Cabinet members pledge their support for a one year term, although many members of the current National Celebrity Cabinet, including Heidi Klum and Leeza Gibbons, have been involved for over five years.

“The Red Cross is a volunteer driven organization that provides humanitarian help to those in need,” said Klum. “It is an honor for me to participate in their celebrity cabinet and encourage all individuals to become involved with their local Red Cross.”

Members of the 2008 National Celebrity Cabinet will be involved in one of the country’s largest volunteer networks and will promote awareness of Red Cross services by participating in public service advertisements, as well as donating their time, money and blood, aiding in disaster relief, and lending a helping hand to those in need. Returning members include Jackie Chan, Sara Evans (who recently organized an auction as part of her involvement), Jamie Lee Curtis, Patti LaBelle, Jimmy Smits, Marlee Matlin, Nancy O’Dell, Jane Seymour, Peyton Manning, Jimmie Johnson, Rascal Flatts, Julianne Moore, George Foreman, Marcia Gay Harden, Elisabeth Rohm, Eli Manning, Daddy Yankee, Chayanne, Aisha Tyler, Pierce Brosnan, Amy Grant, Miley Ray Cyrus, Kristen Bell, Pat Green, Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock), Dr. Phil McGraw, Raven Symone, Niki Taylor, Burney Lamar, and Bradley Whitford.

The American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet was developed in 2002 as part of the Entertainment Outreach Program.

Olivia Newton-John Steps Out For Cancer Treatment

Olivia Newton-John is to lead a team of stars from sports and showbiz, as well as cancer survivors, on a 21-day extreme challenge to trek the entire length of the Great Wall of China.

The 59-year-old star and breast cancer survivor will be joined on the trip by stars such as Sir Cliff Richard, Leeza Gibbons, Jimmy Barnes, Joan Rivers, Dannii Minogue, members of rockband INXS, and many more as they trek along the landmark to raise money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre being built in Australia.

“They say the longest journey starts with the first step,” said the singer. “Since I was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago I have taken many steps on my cancer journey. In recent times, the journey has been working with wonderful people to build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre. Now, I’m taking one more step on that journey – all in the fight against cancer!”

The journey of “a million steps” will symbolize the physical and emotional journey of cancer patients. The event aims to gather $1 for each step taken along the Wall.

“People are asking me why do you want to walk 200 kilometers along the Great Wall of China, up 40 degree gradients, across mountain ranges and through dust storms of the Gobi Desert,” the singer said on her website. “The answer is that this journey – this million steps towards the cure for cancer – started for me 15 years ago, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. That life-changing experience has given me some true understanding and compassion for others walking that path – and I want to help. That’s why I am so excited to be leading this walk on the Great Wall to raise money and awareness for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre – these 21 days on the Wall will be another part of my own journey.”

Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England, in 1948, but moved to Australia when she was five. A talented singer from a young age and passionate about music, she released her first solo album in 1971, and in 1974 represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest. A long list of hits, including I Honestly Love You and Let Me Be There, led to her being cast as Sandy in the film version of Grease in 1978.

The early 1980s were phenomenal years for the young star, and she had a string of hits including Xanadu, Let’s Get Physical, and Suddenly (with Cliff Richard). But in 1992, on the eve of a world tour, Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the start of a long battle for the Grammy Award winning artist, but she eventually overcame the disease and returned to music. She also devoted herself to helping other cancer sufferers, and plans to build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre, which will provide complementary therapies to support patients on their cancer journey, treating mind and spirit as well as the body. The Wellness Centre is Olivia’s special passion, with a focus on the whole person and not just the disease. Cancer patients worldwide will benefit from the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre’s dedicated research facilities and clinical trials, with the development of future cancer vaccines and therapies through the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, headquartered in New York.

Newton-John is also an ambassador to the United Nations Environmental Program, and served as a spokesperson for the Children’s Health Environ-Mental Coalition (CHEC) for 10 years. She spends large amounts of time supporting organizations such as the Red Cross, the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Rainforest Alliance, and Concept Cure. She also became well-known for promoting the Olivia Breast Self-Exam Kit.

Sara Evans Helps Disaster Fund With Auction

February 5, 2008, was a birthday country singer Sara Evans will never forget – it was the day tornadoes and severe weather ripped through the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee, killing 59 people and injuring hundreds more.

It was a disaster that tore at the heart of the Tennessee local, and she immediately asked fans to donate to her favorite charities in lieu of gifts. But now the 37-year-old has gone one step further, and is auctioning some very special memorabilia to raise funds for disaster relief in the affected areas.

Until February 19, Evans’ fans have the chance to bid on a signed top and dress the singer wore in her music video to the song “As If”, with proceeds going to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The items also come with a copy of the video and a signed Greatest Hits CD, and the auction can be accessed through the singer’s website.

“I am so honored to be a part of the National Celebrity Cabinet,” said Evans. “The American Red Cross sustains victims during disasters and has supported countless families through the recent tornados that devastated Tennessee and surrounding states. We are still seeing the devastation nightly on the news and I encourage everyone to support their efforts not just now, but all year long. You never know when a disaster will affect you or someone you love.”

The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund helps victims of thousands of disasters across the country every year, and relies on public donations to help victims. When disaster struck on February 5, the organization immediately mobilized volunteers and supplies to provide shelter and food to those affected by the tornadoes. They also lent emotional support to survivors and emergency workers, and helped them cope with the fear and anxiety experienced during the disaster. Even now, the Red Cross is working hard to help with cleaning up the aftermath and providing assistance where needed.

In addition to the auction, Sara Evans also recorded a Public Service Announcement to encourage people to make donations to the Red Cross, and has now taped a message for tornado preparedness. These will soon be available on the Red Cross website.

Melua Calls On TV Bosses To Support Charity

Katie Melua has asked the producers of the hit British TV talent show The X Factor to donate the proceeds from the show’s forthcoming Christmas single to charity.

The winner of the series final on December 15th will release a for-profit cover of Mariah Carey’s song When You Believe. Melua is herself releasing a duet rendition of What A Wonderful World with late jazz singer Eva Cassidy to raise money for the Red Cross this Christmas, and wants charities to benefit more from the annual race for the number-one spot in the charts.

“In recent years the whole Christmas number one thing hasn’t been focused on the Christmas spirit,” said Melua.

“I’m not saying What A Wonderful World is a Christmas song, it obviously isn’t, but what it’s raising money for and awareness for is very much in the Christmas spirit. Maybe this will encourage The X Factor to donate all their money to charity. I think they should.

“To me Christmas is about families and giving. It should not just be about giving each other the latest iPods and Nintendo games. The reason why the Christmas number one is such a big deal is because that’s the song people buy to give each other presents. So if all that money was to go to charity that would be great.”

Melua is no stranger to charity; she is an Ambassador for Save the Children, performed at Nelson Mandela’s 46664 concert, and supports a host of other charities.

Beckham To Play Charity Soccer Match

Soccer star David Beckham is to play in a charity match to benefit those affected by the devastating wildfires currently causing havoc in Southern California.

November 4 will see Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy team, which he joined in July, take on a celebrity team – known as Hollywood United – with profits going to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

“Everyone’s expected to play, including David,” said Galaxy General Manager, Alexi Lalas. “This is a great opportunity for our organization to do something positive for our area, our home, and for our friends and neighbors who have been impacted by these incredibly devastating wildfires.”

The fires have now been burning out of control on the border between LA and Mexico for two weeks, and over 500,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. During this time, 800 square miles and over 2000 buildings and houses have been destroyed, with 12 people confirmed dead.

“Our players are residents of Southern California,” said Lalas. “This is a great way for us to bring some attention and, most importantly, raise some money.”

The match will take place at Galaxy’s home ground, the Home Depot Center in Carson, and a large turnout is expected. A host of celebrities have stepped forward for the Hollywood United team, including Without A Trace star Anthony LaPaglia, The Transporter’s Jason Statham, former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, Def Leppard’s Vivian Campbell, and former footballer turned actor, Vinnie Jones.

“We’ve all witnessed the destruction these wildfires have caused throughout Southern California,” said Lalas. “Through soccer, we have the ability to help those who have been impacted by this disaster. We encourage all Galaxy fans and soccer fans everywhere to come out and support this worthy cause.”

The footballers are not the only ones doing their bit for the cause. Singer Gwen Stefani has donated the profits from her concert in San Diego on October 30 to victims of the wildfires.

“When I heard about the devastation of the fires, I felt I should cancel my show out of respect,” said the native of Orange County, California. “But then it occurred to me there might be a more useful solution.”

Stefani announced that the proceeds of the show will go to the San Diego Foundation’s After-The-Fires Fund 2007, which has been set up to provide grants to emergency relief providers and non-profit service organizations involved in the fires

Jerry Lewis Tops Charity Survey

A survey has named comedy actor Jerry Lewis as the most effective celebrity for charity causes, with 43% of those surveyed saying he is the best at raising funds and driving change for the issues he supports.

The survey, carried out by the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, put the 81 year old veteran of movies including “The Nutty Professor” at the top of a list of ten philanthropic celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey, Michael J. Fox, Jimmy Carter, Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie, Bono, Lance Armstrong, Katie Couric, and Rosie O’Donnell. Jerry Lewis helped establish the Muscular Dystrophy Association in 1952, and has organized and hosted a Labor Day Telethon every year since 1966. His fundraising efforts have raised over $2 billion for neuromuscular care and research, with last year’s telethon raising $61 million alone. He has also been involved with fundraising for The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. He is the only media celebrity to have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I’m always honored and humbled by the response of the American people to my efforts on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association,” said Lewis, who will host the 42nd Labor Day Telethon on September 2 and 3. “Their generosity has allowed us to provide important services and conduct vital research for 57 years.”

The survey also investigated the issues that Americans find most important. The results showed that causes to help children and animals are the most popular, followed by education and literacy, services for the elderly, religion, health and medicine, the environment, and aid for disabled people.

Respondents of the survey aged between 18 and 42 were more interested in international causes, and were more likely to be influenced by celebrities such as Oprah and Bono, who work with developing countries to ease poverty. Respondents over the age of 43 were influenced more by older celebrities, such as Bill Gates, who supports health and education issues, and Jimmy Carter, who works with Habitat For Humanity. 42% of those surveyed said they want to donate more time to charity, but cannot find the opportunity.
