Dean Cain Spearheads Microsoft Charity Campaign

More than 17 million children in the U.S. receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at their local public schools; as schools close for the summer, these children lose access to those programs. In response, Microsoft and Feeding America are joining forces to fight hunger in the United States through the “Browser for the Better” campaign.

For every completed download of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft’s Browser for the Better campaign will donate the financial equivalent of eight meals to Feeding America’s network of 206 local food banks, which supplies food to more than 25 million Americans each year.

Spearheading the campaign is a series of viral videos starring television star Dean Cain and directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait.

“This summer, millions of families throughout the U.S. are living on the brink of hunger. Demand for food is higher than it has been in decades. The Browser for the Better campaign is both raising awareness of hunger and giving people an easy opportunity to help their neighbors at no cost to them. It’s a win-win arrangement for Microsoft, Feeding America and people all across the country,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

The Browser for the Better campaign kicked off yesterday at New York City’s Time Warner Center and San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza. Artists at each location used food cans to sculpt the likenesses of the Empire State Building and Golden Gate Bridge, respectively. The cans of food will be donated to the Food Bank For New York City, City Harvest in New York, and the San Francisco Food Bank, all members of Feeding America.

“Our customers have told us they want to have an impact in the lives of their friends and neighbors,” said Amy Barzdukas, senior director for Internet Explorer at Microsoft. “The Browser for the Better campaign is all about making it easy for people to make a real difference. Not only are they contributing to their community, they’re getting a more secure, modern browser designed for the way people browse the Internet today.”

Z100, New York’s Hit Music Station, will get the summer music season off to a sizzling start for the tenth time with Z1OO’s ZOOTOPIA 09 on Saturday, May 16, with an eclectic line-up of pop, rock and R&B artists ready to bring down the house at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

This year’s headliners will include the Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, the All American Rejects, Ciara, Soulja Boy, Jesse McCartney, and Flo Rida.

This year, $1 of every ticket sold will go to City Harvest, the non-profit food rescue organization that is the official charity of Z100’s Zootopia ‘09. Founded in 1982, City Harvest is dedicated to feeding New York City’s hungry men, women and children by collecting excess food from restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, farms and other food industry sources. The food is then delivered free of charge to more than 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal, with over 23 million pounds of food now collected annually.

“Z100’s Zootopia is all about the listeners. Every year, we work with some of the biggest artists to come together for a few hours and perform their biggest hit songs live. This year’s line-up is a true reflection of the most popular songs on Z100 right now,” said Sharon Dastur, Program Director for Z100. “We’re excited to be partnering with such a great organization like City Harvest. With the current economy, many families face the tough challenge of putting food on their table, and as the official charity partner of the show, it gives the listeners and the station a great opportunity to give back to the community.”

Photographers Focus On Hunger

The world’s best talent in photography, entertainment, and fine food are joining together to help feed hungry New Yorkers tomorrow, September 18.

FOCUS: an Auction of the Finest Photography to Benefit City Harvest will feature hors d’oeuvres prepared by celebrated chefs, auctions of collectible fine art photography, and live music from the Bacon Brothers.

The auction’s organizing committee features some of Hollywood’s greatest stars, including Harrison Ford, Kevin Bacon, Susan Sarandon, Uma Thurman, Whoopi Goldberg, as well as Rachael Ray and Malaak Compton-Rock. Photographs from over 50 artists are up for auction, including Tim Robbins.

On one special night, the world’s best talent in photography, entertainment and fine food come together. This premier NYC event features live and silent auctions of collectable fine art photography, along with live music performances and special tastings prepared by celebrated chefs – all in support of City Harvest, an organization that collects excess food from restaurants, manufacturers, wholesalers, greenmarkets, hotels, corporate cafeterias, grocery stores and farms, and delivers it to more than 600 community food programs. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.

The auction will take place at Skylight Studios at 275 Hudson Street, New York, at 7pm. Door sales are $250.
